late to the party by a few years, but you say you can do up to 30 lbs at a time with this setup? do you turn the malt throughout? or does the fan make that a non-issue?

Yep that's right 30 lbs and you don't have to turn it but I often do just for fun

Very clever! I've been using a food dehydrator and the best starting temperature I've managed is 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Have you had any problems with mold? Regards, P

No mold problems, actually I rarely even use the fan anymore, there seems to be enough airflow through the box to dry out the malt with just the hotplate on. If I'm doing 10 lbs it'll take around 18-19 hours.

Nice job! Did you cut the plywood yourself? Or did you have it cut? Thanks for sharing...

+segarza Had it cut at the Home depot, saves time and they do a straighter cut than I could ever do.

+Brewing Beer The Hard Way -- That's the reason I asked. I was looking at how well all the panels fit together, thinking...I could never cut that plywood so precise. lol

This is very cool. You may consider using a dimmer switch on the fan for adjusting the air flow.

Good video I use a similar system but with a stainless steel container (recovered basket washing machine) for drying up to 90°C and an electric heater with fan for hot air.

+Brewing Beer The Hard Way The system is still to be improved (very basic) but if you want I can take pictures. Where can I send them? In the drum of a washing machine I do everything: germination and drying.

Very cool man, how many lbs. do you get out of each batch?

+chase leftwich This kiln is meant to hold a lot, up to 50lbs but I haven't tried that yet. I'm currently doing experiments with brumalt using only 2.5 lb batches. I'll test the limits of this kiln design in an upcoming video. Thanks for the idea!

Brilliant. May be you could fit a controller (STC 1000?) to your system so that it switches on and off your hotplate to maintain your temp? Do you grow your own hops too by the way? Cheers.

+Cider Meister Yes possibly it has a thermostat in it but this won't take the cooling fan into account so having a thermostat up high by the tray might work. I do grow hops but in pots and they didn't do so well last year.

Hi Gary you can see the dimensions on the blog:brewingbeerthehardway.wordpress.com/category/malt-kilns/ It's been working really well for me, it's great for amounts up to 30lbs. If you wanted to malt more all at once I'd go a little bigger. Think of it in terms of square feet, 1 square foot can do 10 lbs. So a box that's 2x3 can do 60lbs of malt easily. Mine is 3 square feet, but the advantage is that mine fits in my oven so I can cure the malt at higher temperatures in the oven.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4iTf6dondVkrNU 30 lbs would be more manageable given the dimensions of the kiln.

add a rheostat before the fan to make it a variable speed fan
