This is Part 1 in a series of videos about an amazing day of exploring on the fascinating island of Malta, a tiny country in the Mediterranean Sea between Italy and Africa. Things get more interesting in the coming videos as I explore old ruins from various timeframes, some of them many thousands of years old. I used to stay at the Sea Bank Hotel not far from the Popeye Village. Comino used to be lovely when it wasn't so busy, but these days it's bonkers busy that it spoils the whole experience. We went 6 times after we had our honeymoon there 9 years ago, but haven't been since before the pandemic.

I did go to the Hypogeum, and while it was incredibly well preserved and fascinating ( somewhat pricy), you can only go in on a tour which was great because it give a lot of information. But I discovered while staying in Rabat more tombs, costing only a few euro and they are extensive, and they let you explore on your own and your shoes would not be an issue. Rabat is a must see anyhow.

Great to see this area of Malta again, shame you didn't get a nice blue sky day! There is a huge abandoned military base beyond that World War II bunker you saw called Fort Campbell, when I was there it was unprotected and you could just stroll around it (being careful of the glass and damaged roofs of course). The picture that you saw of Popeye Village that you thought was a village there before it became the film set was actually the original Popeye Village film set - I visited it with my family when I was a kid in the 1980's. Most of the original set didn't actually have an inside, it was just a front that they used for the outside scenes in the movie. What's there now has been built since as a theme park. Cool place though. Just watched the end and am wondering if you'll find them in the next episode, as you can tell I'm a little behind with your videos but catching up. 😃

Hahaha, Hypogeum, literally means underground in Greek. Hypo - as in under andι geum from the greek γη or gaia, meaning earth. We use it all the time in modern greek, meaning basement of a building most of the time.

Maltese is a fascinating language. I was reading up on the alphabet. Since there are so many Arabic sounds that can’t accurately be represented by the Roman alphabet, they had to get creative. It has changed a lot over the years. It is considered a Semitic language - The only Arabic language written in Roman script. Hypogeum sounds amazing! And what fun you could have buying shoes for one-time wear! Pink wingtips, perhaps? 😂 You could donate them afterwards. OMG That Popeye ear worm! Noo! 🙉 😂 I love your Malta content. Might even rewatch the 2019 vids.

Hi Gabriel, I find it interesting that there is still interest in the Popeye movie set after so many years. The cartoon is no longer in syndication so children can't even identify with the characters. Adults would be the only ones that could have a real interest because they were raised around this cartoon for around 50 years.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos Yes in America, cars 🚙 are mostly automatic rather than gears. I’ll love to one day drive a Tesla car even for a day because they’re totally different than normal cars. In a Tesla you start the car with a card rather than a key and also you can self drive it and interestingly there are no engines in them. Instead it’s all electrical charging. In reality you can put your shopping 🛍 in the front and back bonnet of the car because there are no engines.
