One of the funnier builds from the old days was attack speed Malz. Build attack speed and damage and watch the minions do tons of damage. I would call it in modern days a Teemo on hit build. Black fire torch is never worth going first. The damage it deals total throughout the game is usually less than the first ten minutes of Liandry’s Torment. I’ve tested this several times. The scaling Ap factor with Blackfire Torch is another reason it’s never worth going first. That 4% is almost nonexistent until 3rd or 4th item.

That's the thing, though- later in the game, you want blackfire for the extra damage you get from its AP + scaling AP... But that's not why it's being bought first. Unlike Liandry's, Blackfire is a mana item. It gives you the mana you'll need in your rotations, tied neatly into a item that depending what you're going for in your build, you'll want anyways- and it gives just enough flat AP as a first item that most champs can afford to use it instead of a higher damage item (like Liandry's) and still be useful.

If i may pass some little malzahar tricks i've learned over the years: when on turret range on a cannon wave, wait until the tower starts shootin the cannon to summon the voidlings. The turret targets them before any other minion but won't change targets when summoned. The voidlings cause significant more damage and are faster, you can even use the Q to get another 2 and cast it to make 5 in total. Do not use E or you will change the priority. My malzahar is a tower destroyer and a menace, Ziggs level XD
