Mama would be so very proud of you primo! She didn’t teach us the language because her children were looked at & spoken down to as “immigrants” and were severely demeaned when they were young! She didn’t want any of us to feel that hurt. At least that’s what she told me when I inquired about it! I miss her every day! Thanks for sharing her love of cooking! You did her rice & beans perfectly!!! That’s exactly how I remember it!!! XOXOX

Thank you, prima! Yeah, I was told the same thing too about why we weren't taught the language as kids. I totally understand and appreciate their reasoning, but part of me still wishes that I was fluent in the language so I could fit in more with our people. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! It's so cool for the people who follow my channel to learn just a little bit about our beloved Mama, who is missed daily within our family. Love you! 🇵🇷

Sounds good 👍 In case you haven’t figured out how to make sofrito. Here’s the recipe. Use your judgment on how much you want to make by adding or lessening your ingredients. I buy cilantro 🌿 garlic 🧄, green peppers, 🫑 onions 🧅 sweet chili peppers (aji dulce), recao 🍃. Mix altogether in a blender for about 1 to 2 mins. Done…put your sofrito in glass jars to keep it fresh and refrigerate.

Puerto rican food is soo underrated not sure why it's not more popular in America most people seem to look down on you if you eat this type of food all the health nuts always have a problem with everything so most of these ingredients they would probably think are terrible but I have tried to make some Puerto rican dishes recently from youtube and can honestly say I loved everything I tried the food had so much flavor and it felt so satisfying to eat actually I think it was one of the best meals I had in years

This is almost exactly how I make my pink beans and rice minus the meat. I’m going to add meat next time. I also use the jarred society from Goya. I learned the recipe from my neighbor when my husband was in the army. One of the best parts of military life is having friends and neighbors of all cultures and recipe exchange and pot lucks. When my husband retired from the army, we spent at least 2 years sad and depressed because we missed meeting new people. Side note. I have made this with small red beans before and it was delicious. I’ve used a mix of pink beans and small red beans and black beans and it was delicious. Sometimes you just gotta use what you got! I must say my absolute favorite is using the original pink bean though. There have been times I didn’t have pink beans or didn’t want beans so I used all the ingredients to flavor my rice then threw it all in the rice cooker, it was Pretty delicious. I usually always have people ask me for the recipe. Either way I make it!

Puerto Rican here, I have made this dish all my life and you can make it from fresh ingredients, fresh minced garlic, dried beans if you dont have canned, fresh potatoes, pork any pork will do, the fattier the better, tomato sauce or paste, annatto seed oil, make your own by steeping in warmed oil for an hour until nice and red or you can use powder if you can find it or leave it out, and season it with salt, black pepper, turmeric, oregano, garlic power if you dont have fresh, and onion powder these are the same ingredients in Adobo minus the anti-caking chemicals and MSG which may cause cancer, cook same way in video and serve over rice with a nice thin fried pork chop, enjoy.

I'm from PR myself! So good to hear we have that in common. Although my husband had told me that I'm losing the traditions a little. I don't use sazón, I don't necessarily have to use Goya, I buy cheaper brands and I don't make sofrito! I cut onions and peppers and mashed the garlic right before using it. The food tastes just as good. What I don't like about sazón o adobo is the MSG. I don't use medium grain rice, I like jasmine. I don't use empty butter containers to store leftovers and my oven is not full of pots and pans. 😁 I call myself Southerican now. 😁 I'm a traitor! No. 😁 Oh and no olives or capers!

I happen to have all these ingredients, have to give it a try. I store dry pink beans as a replacement for Swedish brown beans. I use them to make traditional Swedish Bruna bönor. @@TheUrbanPrepper Google "Swedish brown beans". It's kind of a sweat and sour flavor (flavored traditionally with golden syrup and vinegar). We Swedes like to eat it with thick smoked pork (like thick bacon) or even just sausage. Very easy to make, and works great with the dry pink beans. The syrup (Swedish Light Syrup, "Sirap") used is available on Amazon under the brand Dan Sukker, but i found the US brand Steen's 100% cane syrup works well too.

Great video. My parents are both from the island, and my mouth was watering, watching you pour those beans on top of the white rice. I'm trying to make my mom's recipe. She always taste mine and tells me, "Son, they are good, but they aren't going to beat mine on a good day. 😂 I add too much stuff to mine, I think her recipe is simpler and better tasting than mine, full of patotoes and pieces of pork chop are mine and always taste too much like tomato and too thick. Her beans are a bit more watery, but the broth is ten times better than my thick one. Mom, one day I will put a hidden camera in the kitchen!😂

Awesome! Keep me posted! I prefer it with the diced bacon, BTW, including the grease. My cardiologist doesn't like it though.... :)

I am full Puerto Rican from Rio Piedras and the whole reason I prep was from watching my Mamita, Tias y Abuelas, get ready for hurricane season. I get that you are making the recipe for emergency situations but know that my mom either put cut up carrots or pumpkin chunks in her habichuela recipe. I like making my sofrito fresh but Goya or Bohio are ok. If you can get your hands on the book Puerto Rican Cookery that is the translation of the original Cocina Criolla, you can make all the same things Abuela made.

I love this story! Yes, I have the Puerto Rican Cookery book. It's awesome! I have one of Mama's old copies in addition to a new one (in English). I've heard of other families using carrots or even yams in their beans. I just remember Mama using potatoes. Nice to know that you are full 🇵🇷!

@@TheUrbanPrepper my cookbook is so old and worn but it has my Abuelita's handwriting all over it. When I got married, my Abuelita started teaching my half German/half Irish husband how to make rice with pegao and habichuelas. For Christmas she bought him the English version. I treasure it. All you need for a perfect dinner now is tostones and a fried egg on top of the Arroz and Habichuelas 🤣🇵🇷. I still cannot eat oatmeal made with water like they serve it here. I have to eat it Puerto Rican style with ground oatmeal, milk, cinnamon stick, sugar and lemon peel lol. You are making me miss home 😫

Tnx for sharing, i'm not one for beans most of the time, but this sure made me remind myself of Pavlov ;) ... also do think that 'pantry cooking' is a topic that's covered to little on prepper channels (even though it pops up every once in a while), and having these types of recipes that can be made from the actual food storage are pretty welcome in my views; as having more ways to prepare 'rice and beans' seems like something every prepper will want to know...

I make good Puerto Rican beans too. I add kabocha squash to mine and potatoes. And thanks for that tip: I never fry my Vienna sausages. I just dumped them in. I like your method better.
