MAMA I A Short Documentary Film (2019)
This film is dedicated to my grandma, whom we call “Mama” in the Teochew dialect. “MAMA" is about my grandmother’s love for food and family. In Chinese cooking, garlic is used in just about everything. So during her visits, my grandma would sit down, cut and peel garlic. While this mundane act may seem small, it symbolises her great love and dedication. She would prepare the garlic in bulk so that my mom, who cooks every day, wouldn’t have to. In life, it is often the small acts that make a big impact and the everyday actions that reveal a person’s character. Just like how garlic is essential to Chinese cooking, so is my Mama to our family.
PS: The working title was “Smelly Love” but my Mom convinced me that “MAMA” sounded more elegant.
