My one and only fear about pursuing medicine, is how it will effect my family.

So much respect for you, Mama Doctor Jones. We have followed similar paths. I just finished Ob/Gyn residency this summer and have three kids (one as a premed, one right after I started medical school, one in residency). I'll see your BS in Psych and raise you a BFA in Theatre with a Psych minor. Oh yeah, how's THAT for useless? The good thing was all the adcom people for medical school ate it up. I think they were so happy to have a break from talking about everyone's fruit fly or mouse research.

Hi Mama Doctor Jones! I know I'm a little late to this video but I still wanted to share my story so far. In my junior year of high school I fell in love with Occupational Therapy. I also knew that at some point I would want to become a wife and mom. I realized that to practice OT I would need a master's degree with a least five years of training. I became overwhelmed by the whole process, however I still applied to as many direct entry OT programs as I could during my senior year of high school. My "dream" school rejected me so I went with my second choice, where I met an amazing guy who became my current boyfriend. I know that I have only just finished my first semester but your channel has inspired me to hold onto my dreams of becoming a wife and mother while pursuing my dream career and that I can do everything I have my heart set on regardless of "is now the right time". Thank you for the advice of taking one step at a time!

You are proof that it’s possible and that you can grow and progress in different aspects of life all at the same time.

I can not tell you how much I needed to hear your advice. I'm closing out my sophomore year of college and I'm realizing what I originally wanted to do isn't what I want to do anymore. I'm scared if my choices now are the right ones. With all the pandemic stuff going on I'm realizing how much I'm drawn to the medical field and also with my obsession with children, pregnancy and helping expecting and new mothers being so, an ob/gyn seems like a good fit. With this though, I have found myself spiraling into a void of anxiety and being overwhelmed. I find myself thinking too far ahead and worrying about too many things. It feels like you were speaking directly to me. You have inspired me to take my chapters as they come and learning along the way as to how to balance my life. Thank you so much! (5/4/2020)

My dream since High school has been to become a midwife. I started nursing school in 2009, a year after I graduated High School. After a year i took a break due to a severe depression. During that break I got pregnant with my first child, at 21 years old. Since in Sweden you get over a year of paid parental leave, I was at home with my son for about a year before starting work as a Nursing assistant in our local hospital. I worked for about 4 months, got pregnant again, got married and worked until about 2 months before my 2nd son was born. Another year of maternity leave, then I started back at Nursing school in the fall of 2014. When I was almost finished with Nursing school, in spring 2016, my eldest got Auto-immune encephalitis which led to severe epileptic seizures. He had to spend 2 weeks in the ICU followed by 2 weeks in the children's ward. He still has seizures a couple of times a month, takes a lot of medicines which affekt him quite a lot, and also has been diagnosed with ADHD. Life with a special needs kid is not easy, but we fight on. I had to postpone my last 5-week course to be with him at the hospital, but I finally became a fully qualified Registered Nurse in October 2016. I have applied to the Midwifery program of university 2 times, got in off the waitlist and decided both times that the timing was not right. Next year I'm pretty sure I'll apply again and actually take the spot if it's offered, but right now I'm really happy to be working as a Nurse and starting a new job in an ENT ward on April 1st :)

I’m not sure if I’m 100% set on OB/GYN but I found myself slowly gravitating towards it. A big part of it is that I want to help women from my cultural minority feel safe and confident getting cared for by a person who looks like them and speaks their language. I’d also be bored if I have a routine job, like always in the office, so I’m thinking, and I may look at this four years from now and laugh, that OB/GYN will keep me interested.

I had my son before I started undergrad and now I'm about to graduate in December. I'm due in late Oct /early Nov (miraculously I am graduating a semester early), but I decided to take a gap year before preparing to apply for dental school. My biggest reason is because I was to take the first couple to 3 months after graduating to focus on the DAT and also to spend time with both of my babies. I remember how much I struggled with school having a baby under a year old. Around the time he was able to walk I remember i improved greatly due to the fact he was building more independence as well. My 2nd child will be around 18 months when i start dental school (lord willing i get in the first try) but I also wanted to make sure I did well enough on the DAT so that I could be a good candidate for the HPSP scholarship. I dont want a lot of debt when i graduate so i felt like this was the best bet for me. My husband and I decided that if I did get the scholarship, we would both be willing to move with the babies. Dont let having a family stop you from following your dreams. We're struggling now, but we both know itll be worth it in the end :) I let fear stop me before from going back to school but I'm glad my husband convinced me to go back!

I’m currently a MA, 20yrs old and I work in a clinic with OBGYN, Family practice and pediatrics. I’ve always been drawn to the obgyn field to the point where I was only searching for OBGYN clinics to do my MA externship I found one and I loved it. Yesterday I told my mom I’m really considering to go to school to become an OBGYN Doctor and followed up with “but I dont know if I want to get into all that because of how much I’d be in debt so I’ll just stick to going for labor and delivery RN the debt won’t be as bad” but you’re so right, taking this on step by step is the best way to approach something that you want. I said a prayer in my head asking for guidance and confirmation (I believe in saying your prayer in your head and not aloud because satan answers prayers for the wrong reasons. Satan cannot hear your thoughts but God can. Satan only sees your actions, so pray silently and when the prayer is answered you know it’s from god.) Thank you for this video and especially those inspiring words at the end of your video. I wish you and your family a blessed year and many more❤️

I had my oldest son in October of my fourth year of medical school. After a disastrous delivery with eclampsia I finished med school which was easy compared to what followed. I took a brief break between second and third years of an Internal med residency. Like you I had a wonderful supportive husband who I married in college. I also had help from my mother and mother in law. I am much older than you and it was all but unheard of for women doctors to be mothers. We did wait six years before having our second son. By then I was done with residency and in practice. My sons are now 42 and 36 and we’ve been married for 52 years

I'm a "start at the beginning" type of chic... and so glad I did! I have 4 kids as well, including twins being my first(s). The binge has begun!! 💜💜💜

I think you are so inspiring that you could do all that while have kids and KZbin. It is encouraging because I have a full time AR medical billing job and go to college for the medical billing and coding degree but Im freaking out because I recently just found out Im pregnant with my first child and although I am 24 and very happy about it, it wasn't expected quite yet so I am a little overwhelmed with what the future will be like now

Thank you so much for saying you can just be mom! So many woman tell you should do everything, have a job (preferably a good one) and be mom, and if you chose only one then pick the big job! But you said just being a mom is okay and that makes me happy :)

Woah wait this is really inspiring because I've always felt like people who have prestigious educational/career backgrounds had things figured out from an early age, and everyone around me seems to have already decided fresh out of high school to go to med school or get a PhD, and I don't know what I want to do. So it's kind of nice to know that you can change your mind, change your path, and still do great things. And you can get married and start a family relatively young, even while still in med school of all things! Total respect 😄

I want to be a COTA and I failed my first anatomy class and then took it again and stopped stressing so much and I did so much better! I am trying not to be worried about getting into the program but it's so hard. I love the hospital setting and I like helping people and being really hands-on with others.

Hi, thank you so much for sharing your journey and encouragement! I am currently in my second year as a nurse with my BSN, RN but my dream is to go to medical school. I finally finished all the med school pre-req classes this past August and now all I have to do is study for the MCAT, take it, and apply. I have been feeling very overwhelmed with taking the next step for the MCAT and I really appreciate your wisdom. ❤️ thank you for sharing your story!

I"m a 32 year old mom of 2 little boys (4 & 18mo). I'm trying to decide when and how I want to do grad school and a possible third child. I have a degree in Elementary Education and want to get a masters and possibly a PH.D. in Education, Culture, & Society. My end goal is work on educational policy reform, diversity education training, or teaching collegiately. I love your attitude towards balancing mom, career, and life in general. Thanks for putting this out here!

I just turned 26 - in my final year of nursing in Australia but I plan to study med after I graduate...I've sat the GAMSAT once but didn't get the score I wanted so will likely have to allow another year or so to get the score I need to get admitted. Just starting to think about how on earth I'm going to fit everything in! This was really inspiring to watch.

Thank you for this video. I'm a mom to a two year old girl, finished my BSc. in molecular biology in 2017 and now I'm finishing my first year in medical school. This video gives me hope that I can do this (med school as a mother) and that I don't have to compromise too much.

You must have some very strong mental health to have survived all this and to do everything you do, even now. Very happy for you and love your channel. You're such an important voice in a sea of misinformation and commercially/politically motivated public dialogue around women's bodies.. Thank you!

I’m a mom to a 4yr old and expecting my 2nd baby in February. I’m also still in school and wanting to pursue a career in web development. Your journey is truly inspiring. I often have anxiety about being a mom and being in school and your video really helped ease some of that anxiety. I was wondering if your husband has like a blog or something where he talks about his career? I’ve had a hard time finding parents who code to look at for inspiration and info about the field and who talk about their experience with their career while raising children.

Thank you so much, this was very inspirational. Sometimes I overthink and i'm not even in med school yet. Taking it step by step is honestly key and having a great support system makes a significant difference. I honestly feel encouraged that you are an amazing doctor ( from watching your other vlogs you seem brilliant) and you seem like a wonderful mom. This is what I was worried about since I really want kids but I'm unsure about the balance, but then again one step at a time. Finally, if you mothered twins and smashed med school at once ,then if you can do it so can I. P.S I also love when you said " if you just wanna be a mom and that's all you really wanna be", it's great to see this support . Keep doing what your are doing.

Peace be to you! I'm a new subscriber! I have been a medically licensed Physician Assistant for almost two decades and, also earned a Doctorate of Health Education in my 40s. I did the whole "medical school application" thing 26 years ago! It was expensive 💸, time-consuming⏳ and frustrating 😣! I tried two more times and, was successfully rejected!😅 However, I met my wife, through whom the good Lord gave us four kids! It's amazing how our fates unexpectantly change!😃 I'm so happy for you! You're AMAZING and, so is your supportive husband! You're really funny, BTW!🤣 I enjoyed listening to your sojourn! May the good Lord grant you continued success in your positive endeavors!

Great life lecture! Don't be afraid of taking detours either. You are never "too old" to start something new or continue on an earlier career path! I started being a crime scene tech 20 years after finishing grad school. And I am not afraid, at 51, to do something else in my field that I haven't done yet!

the comment about not liking and not being good at physics really hit home, i’m only in high school but physics is so hard I hardly understand most of it. I want to be an Ob/Gyn someday and I was so worried about physics being my downfall for everything, so thank you for that

Wow. Also a mom of 4 (we had 4 in 4 years), but I know I couldn't have done it during med school or residency training. That really must have been so hard. Even as an attending with a lot more control over my schedule, I always felt pulled in so many directions as a new mom. I like your tip of taking it one step at a time with each step being a choice.
@Prasujith5 жыл бұрын
Really love this one. I just graduated from med school. Preparing for my entrance exam to get in to Internal Medicine Residency in India. Then go for Cardiology in UK. There's a lot of to do and all these far ahead things makes me worried. Your video made me to think in a better way. Thank you. I would like to quote your words: Don't let fear of the future decide what you want to be when you grow up. Don't think so many steps ahead that you have to be scared and it will stop you in your steps. If there is something that you want in the future and it scares you to think that far ahead, back it up a little bit take it one step at a time. Well put the brakes on, you're gonna freak yourself out. So take it one step at a time figure out what you want to do. Take small steps towards that and you'll figure out the balance thing along the way. One step at a time and every step is a choice. It will start feeling a lot less like pressure. You just go in chapters and everything is manageable in chapters. You will get where you want to be, eventually it will work out

hi there.. im echy, from indonesia.. im 32 yo, a fresh graduated surgeon and a mom of 2 sons, 7 and 2.. ive been trying to find stuff like this; a mom doctor, in youtube because my parents used to look out to my children most of the time back when i was a surgical resident.. sometimes im at the hospital for more than 32 hours without sleeping, i got really tired and sleep and the next morning i have to go back to hospital again, so i didnt play or talk with my children for 3 days... and now, i wanna be both, a great surgeon and a great mom... which is kinda impossible, so i need an inspiration and someone to look up to :)....... anyway, cant wait to see ur next video... please do, doctor mom morning or night routine, or a day in a life vlog... have a good day!

Dr Jones, you are one for not turning down a challenge! When are you climbing Mt Everest? This honestly says so much about you and who you are and how you see life. I would be so surprised if I ever found out you backed down from a challenge. I have a much different personality then you. Once I had my son (at 38,, first and only child) I needed to just focus on him. Before that, I taught school, Elem Music Teacher. I do work, but at a much slower pace. Fast enough for me.
