That was totally me with my second child. I have cEDS (I didn't know it at the time) My labor was 2 1/2 hrs start to finish. Water broke at home. AND.... he came fast. I almost had him in the car on the way to the hospital. I was crowning in the car. My body was forcing me to push. Thankfully we called ahead to the hospital, 45 mins away. That car ride was insane. I was in SO much pain. I made it to the room, the dr put his gloves on and caught him. I then started hemorrhaging real bad, almost died. Happy ending though. ETA: The dr that delivered my son was not my dr. He was just nearby the hospital at the time and came in. He was at the golf course. I had him a mess. The tiny bit of labor I had at the hospital was nuts, then I nearly bleed to death. He was frantically massaging my uterus thru my lower abdomen trying to get it to contract, and I was tensing up because the pain was unreal (I didn't get any pain relief) He looks at me and says, stop fighting what I'm doing or you're going to die. SCARY.

Studying tip! Plan plan plan your study times so that you can *revisit* your material. Don't try to do it all in one rushed go. Read ahead of class if you can so that class is like revisiting the material. Though it's focused on more mathy fields, the book "A Mind for Numbers" by Barbara Oakley has a ton of great studying tips if you need help studying! I found it like a month before I was done with college (😭), and wish I found it in high school.

Get in a study group if you can to go over material before a test. READ the assigned texts which over the years in college and nursing school I found that many didn't do that. I was a fast reader so that helped. Remember why you are going to school too. For me it was so I could leave my husband and support myself and my kids. He never once in the two years I was in nursing school ever asked me how I was doing, etc. I had to tell him I expected him at my graduation with the boys, otherwise I know he wouldn't have come. He had no interest in me and what I was doing. So a fire like for me helped to keep me on track. Word of caution. Protect your back at all costs. Follow all lifting rules and using a Hoyer lift or whatever they have these days!!!!

My first I was in early labor for 3 days with constant contractions to the point I couldn't sleep. I don't remember much about that delivery but I remember just feeling really uncomfortable all day to the point I couldn't walk, sit, lay down, nothing so we decided to just get checked out to be safe. We got there I think it was somewhere around mid day or early evening. I was 6cm at that point after being at 4 for the last week prior. I immediately asked for epidural so I could try to get some sleep but I couldn't sleep much because of everyone in the room talking, excitement, and lower back pain that was making it hard to get to sleep. I was checked somewhere around midnight and was only around I think 7 or 8 if I remember right and got checked again I think somewhere around 130-2am because I told them I was still very uncomfortable and my back was still hurting and they told me I was crowning. They got me set up to push and did the first push and started throwing up and I think 2 pushes later she was out. My second I had absolutely no contractions other than very light Braxtons for the weeks prior. I went to take a shower and just as I was about to get out my water broke. Being how long my first was we took our time to wait for my husband to get off in an hr and an hr drive home before heading to the hospital and stopped for food on the way (they wouldn't let me eat with my first) by the time we got there I still had no pain and barely could feel any contractions. They went ahead and started everything with getting checked in, checked to make sure it was amnion (which it was) and went to check my dilation which i was at an 8. They kicked into gear getting everything ready with my antibiotics (group b carrier) and that's when my sciatica decided it was going to spasm locking up my hip. I went to try to get an epidural but I hadn't had enough fluids yet so I couldn't get it for another 30 minutes. As soon as the Dr went to put in epidural line I had a very strong urge to push so they pulled it out slapped a bandage with gauze on it and they had to pick me up to turn me because I couldn't move my hip. She was out in less than 2 pushes and from the time my water broke to the time I had her was exactly 6 hrs. My youngest i stalled at 6cm for 12 hours because I couldn't go pee. Her head was on my ureter (the tube from the bladder that you pee from) and her shoulders were stuck behind the bladder. Gotta say that one was some very intense back pain but her heart rate was dropping to critical levels so they kinda forced me to get the epidural or have to go under general anesthesia for an emergency C-section. They went to check my numbness and dilation about 10 min later just before putting the catheter in and I was crowning she came out in only one or 2 pushes. I'm currently pregnant with our 4th (just found out last week and if anyone knows me personally on here please keep it quiet yet) and probably last and I'm planning on trying again for a natural

When I got pregnant, I flat out told them they were not invited until after I had the baby. They teased me mercilessly that they would be up there. Nope, I joked that I would go into labor on a Friday afternoon/evening and wouldn't call them until Saturday after I had him. Y'all, I went into labor on a Friday evening and was in labor less than 5 hours, had him early Saturday morning! My contractions started about 1030pm Friday evening, after calling my Dr and talking to him (getting the "stay home as long as you can, until you can't talk through the contractions or your water breaks, first babies take a while, etc.") by 1am I told my husband it was time to go. We got to the hospital and when the nurse checked me in triage, she asked how much I was dilated at my last appointment (which was about 3 days prior), and I told her I was about 1cm then. "Well, honey, you are at 8 now!" She starts yelling for more nurses and yelling for someone to call my doctor NOW. 😂 I called my coworkers later that morning to tell them I had him and they thought I was lying. It was awesome 😂. As a patient with many chronic illnesses I‘ve met many doctors. Some who were lovely and kind and caring, some who were the opposite and caused real medical trauma. But almost all anesthesiologists were wonderful! I always do my best to remember to mention them kindly. At my emergency surgery for a paraplegia, in the middle of the night, the anesthesiologist was amazing. She said I‘m probably afraid to death and she’s going to put me to sleep right now, they’ll undress me afterwards. No idea what she gave me, but she was so caring! I‘m not afraid of pain because I know pain, I can handle it. But I‘m always a bit afraid to not wake up again after a surgery. She was amazing with that concern too. Similar experiences with my last pain management doctor. Thank you for doing such an important yet underrated and under appreciated job! 💜

My 1st baby, was during a snowstorm and the maternity ward got hit with a lot of women going into labour. My labour wasn't progressing, so I got abandoned. Which was fine, I was 23 years old and in excellent health, baby was fine and I could hear there were other women in that ward that weren't doing so well. The next day, I had been in there 21 hours, water hadn't broken yet, low contractions still happening but still low on the pain threshold. And then something felt... different? I called the nurse. She checked and said I was only 2-3 centimeters dilated. The ward was a lot quieter, I could hear a lot of babies, the anesthesiologist for the small hospital was snowed in. I was the last one waiting, tired but still doing well. Then I suddenly projectile vomited (a lot, mostly water because I hadn't eaten), my water broke when I threw up the first time. The contractions became intense and painful and I couldn't focus on a single word being said to me. I had dilated 7-8 centimeters inside of 20 minutes and was fully dilated. After a long, tiring and discouraging labour, active labour and delivery was sooo fast. Afterward staff were laughing about how fast that progressed and how politely the baby had waited her turn. It was a lot more natural than I planned, but my next to babies, I opted to go natural. Not because I'm tough but active labour and delivery part were short for me. It was the same with my other two children. Long early labour but from the moment I throw up, we have about 10-15 minutes max.

My fifth was kinda like that! My husband actually convinced me to go in because my water broke which it only ever did on its own at full dilation (doc broke it with my 4th after I was fully dilated because she wasn't coming ). I walked to the room, sat on the bed, nurse looks at me and says she needs to check me. I was ready to push. Had no idea and thought I might be 4 or 5 cm. Baby turned into position when I lay down and away we went!

May 2023 - I had to come back and watch this after your most recent post. I love this story. My friends and I all had long labors for vaginal deliveries, so my friend R decided she had plenty of time with her second to do some laundry, vacuum the house, do the dishes after calling her husband. Her water broke while she was mopping the kitchen floor. Husband comes home and puts her in the car to drive her to the hospital. R goes into transition on the drive, which really isn't far, maybe 15 minutes? They get her to the ER and R is screaming and trying to not push. Her husband was also named R, runs inside freaking out and they bring out a wheel chair for her. She's crowning in the wheel chair. They tossed her on a bed in ER and she delivered her son right there in the ER after less than 5 hours of labor. Scared the dickens out of everyone in the ER waiting room. Having a baby is scary. But somehow, even now, when all the grandmas are having drinks we relive R's second baby birth story. Because it was scary and fun and now that we're grandmas, kind of karmic.

I loved your birth story! I am a retired L&D nurse and I drove myself to my doctor's office with my first. My water was leaking and I wasn't contracting yet. Well after walking the very small mall for 2 hours with my husband with the security guard watching our every move, we finally went to the hospital. I never was able to deliver where I worked. I'm glad I found your channel. It's almost like I'm working again. Almost forgot. I, too, am touched by all of the deliveries that I've helped with (around 1,000 I think) and I have teared up for all of them. Some of them were 42 years ago!

I had dysmenorrhea (clinically very painful periods) for many years (due to uterine septum that I had surgically removed when I found out). I could barely move during periods. After the surgery, my pain went away, and then 2 years later I had my son. Well let me tell ya, the period pain was so bad that labor felt like my periods used to. Maybe a little more intense, but I knew how to handle it. 9lb 12oz baby, drug free, then hemorrhaged like there was no tomorrow and had my uterus manually pounded into submission, balloon catheter inserted, urinary catheter inserted, all with no drugs, and my IV came out during pushing so there was no time to replace it. So, don't call yourself a wuss just yet. Period cramps are real, too. And you're surviving.

I am so glad I watched this video. I went through a horrible birth experience in 1983. Thirty hours of labor after my water broke. They had me on meds to help contractions which were HORRIBLE. I actually had an out of body experience of floating over the delivery room. Watching the activity below. Finally the doctor decided to do a C-Section. She told me that I would be asleep during the procedure. Then the anesthesiologist came in the surgical room and suggested a spinal. I shouted at him and said, the baby's fine, I'm the one dying here. He gave me meds to knock me out. Always felt a little guilty for shouting at the poor guy, and for being so desperate for the horrid pain to end. I had a beautiful little girl and she was fine.

My mom started feeling contractions at work (she was working third shift at the time), so she called her OB, who said she was just anxious (her due date was still a few weeks away). However, later at home, she decided that this baby was coming, and so my dad drove her to Indy, two hours away, where her OB was. It was so far away because they wanted the same one she’d had during her first pregnancy, who had switched hospitals. Ten minutes after they got there, she was holding a 9lbs, 12oz baby. The car was still in front of the door, and she was still in triage.

I have to say I love Dr. Jones willingness to be so open about her own birth stories and when she said she was ready to take fentanyl from someone off the street I was thinking "Why not write yourself a script, cuz you never know what you'll get on the street." The honesty and willingness to be so open with us is so appreciated. As someone who works in health records, I'd love to sit with both she and Dr. Mike and listen to them tell stories.

I guess I did the “poor man’s version” of starting to drive myself to the hospital. Fortunately I didn’t finish. I had walked 45 minutes to church and had my first contraction while hanging up my coat. Knowing how long labour takes with the first I sat through the 3 hour service. By the time it was done contractions were 5 minutes apart. I had seen in prenatal class that walking was good when in labour and my self esteem was below sea level at the time and I didn’t want to bother anyone for a ride, so I started walking after the service finished. Ironically the hospital was only 3 doors down from where I lived so I knew I had a 45 minute walk to get there. Fortunately I only got 2 blocks and someone from my church saw me walking and stopped to give me a ride. Since they offered I accepted

My grandma walked 45 min to the hospital in labor with her second child. She didn't want to bother someone, too. As she arrived, they wanted to check first, how it is going and she was like: take me in the delivery room NOW or I'm gonna have this baby here on the stairs. 15 min later, she gave birth and another woman in the delivery room said: wtf? I'm contracting here for HOURS and she just walks in and has her baby 😄

Well done doctor mama, its great that you acknowledge the intensity of the pain involved in labour, when I had my 1st, labour pain was described as "discomfort", quote you may feel some discomfort in the latter stages, wow what an understatement

Girl I'm crying over here, you're right every single birth is so exceptional and beautiful. Those first moments of mom meeting baby and the partner meeting baby are just something that even if you don't want your own child I hope you get to experience in one way or another because there is nothing like that moment 💗😭💗 not everyone is tears by any means but I know I sure have to duck out to cry because it's such a sweet moment to share even briefly to help mom push 💗

When I gave birth to my son, my mom had recently retired from being an L&D nurse at that hospital, so it was pretty weird coming in and everyone being so excited to see her and meet me who was being induced lol. She told me about her favorite anesthesiologist and he happened to be the one to give me my epidural that night. He checked in with me after I delivered my son, and I couldn't stop thanking him lol. He was definitely my hero!

When I had my first, my water broke a little at a time and I thought I was just tinkling on myself. No discomfort at all. No contractions. Nothing. I went to the er and they asked if I had any discomfort and I said no none at all. The lady looked at me like I was stupid which really hurt my feelings and said "well youre probably not in labor because you feel fine". They tested my fluid and it WAS AMNIOTIC FLUID. I had my son about 9 hours later.

Mine was also a trickle. They actually had to finish breaking my water in the hospital. I called my doc but it was Sunday so it said if you suspect your water broke to just go to the hospital. I was having mild cramps, but I had been having them all week. Get there fully expecting it to be a false alarm..nope...amniotic fluid...not allowed to go home until the baby is born.

I totally agree that epidurals are magical. I went through 18 hours of labor naturally and the contractions were not ending all the way before another started and I was only dilated to a 2. I finally got an epidural and could sleep. A - MAZING!!! My labor was 27 hours long. I can't imagine going through another 9 hours of that. Plus I pushed for an hour. I would never do another non-medicated labor again.

Have recently discovered your vids-I worked in a hospital when pregnant with 2nd, actually had OB check that day, contracted all day after (39 weeks at that point-appointment was made for induction in 6 days on her due date). By end of day (even got through a diabetic diet education late afternoon-I'm an RD) contractions 8-10 min apart. Refused to go down to L&D-instead DROVE home (had to stop twice on way to car). Then waited hours to go back (well waiting on pizza delivery for Mom in law who was in town, to stay with oldest)-and yea-I am one of those who got to hospital too late for epidural...2 hours from arriving in triage to delivery. Saw some night shift peeps on way out whom I had seen earlier in day still pregnant! L&D nurses are the absolute best people on planet!!

My daughter is pregnant & due in 8 weeks. I’m so glad I found your channel and shared it with her. I’m an MA and for years I was dr mom. But since she has been pg, I’m no longer dr mom (she’s the only one so far who’s realized that I am NOT dr mom, this would have been handy years ago when they thought I could put sutures in for a head laceration in my kitchen) but so many things have changed re: pg rules. So, now I am not “all knowing” dr mom that I was before. Thank you Jesus! It’s her first baby & things I was previously calm about, I am no longer. Anyway I’ve subscribed (follower 11,111k there has to be something awesome for getting that number lol) Hope you are having an amazing day. I’m looking forward to watching your other videos. Hugs, Summer xo

Does your husband have your sense of humor also? I can just imagine the laughter around the dinner table! Haha! 😂🤣😍💖

Second child. My daughter “didn’t feel right” so she went to the emergency room. They immediately put her in labor and delivery triage room. Five minutes later the baby was coming out. She didn’t get to have an epidural or anything. I was a vet tech for 10 years, but I couldn’t handle people stuff. She found it hilarious trying to tell me exactly how everything feels coming out, including the umbilical cord and the placenta.

I just watched your Shawn Johnson baby video, which led to this video, and between the two, nothing else has made me feel like I made the right decisions in my own labours. I was raised with that same outlook, that you're "weak" if you need pain killers. My firstborn was sideways and if I hadn't chosen the epidural to relax the muscles that held him in the wrong way then both of us would have been in danger. He was born, about an hour later, vaginally and perfectly. Thank you for giving us the information we need.
