If you watch the purple hawke guide to mamamoo I'm sure you'll understand some of the reasons they're not as popular as some other groups, the members tend to push boundaries and that can be controversial. They're also from a tiny company that they basically built from the ground up with their success, in the early days they styled themselves, did their own choreography and were doing up to 4 performances each day.

The reason why they didn’t go big internationally is because of their agency and how small it was back when they were starting out. The company isn’t as small now but admittedly hasn’t promoted Mamamoo too well as a whole for overseas viewers, so unlike BlackPink etc they didn’t really have that corporate push. Also another thing to note is that none of them are fluent in English at all but it seems like recently they are learning more :)

The girls always start off in the same position. Left to right Moon Byul or Moonstar, Solar, Whee In, and Hwasa. Like you guys, I go to church every time I listen to these heavenly voices. They got the gift. The rapper Moonstar just released a song called Lunatic. Please check it out. You will get to hear her honey vocals. Whee In also has a new release You Make Me Happy. It's probably best to stay away from comparing Blackpink & Mamamoo cuz it can turn into a pointless catfight that boils down to our girls are more popular vs our girls are more talented. Each group is great at what they do and the members get along well but they come from different sets of circumstances, they have different artistic & career goals, and their companies pursued different avenues in promoting them. RBW was a startup company in 2014 when Mamamoo was the first group to debut under the label whereas BP was promoted as the next big thing from the start by one of kpop's Big 3 agencies. RBW has largely kept Mamamoo at home or in East Asia and hasn't attempted to promote MMM globally very much at all. RBW has also made many mistakes with MMM over the years, some of which have turned off international fans and added fuel to the MMM hate bonfire but I don't want to get into all that because it will just sound like I'm bashing the label and making excuses for the group. You asked about how they were formed and that's a good question because it illustrates one of the ways MMM is different from other girl groups. RBW co-CEO, songwriter & producer Kim Dohoon assembled Mamamoo with the idea of creating a girl group based on their vocal talent and creativity rather than kpop's usual formula of selecting members to fit a pre-determined marketing image/group concept such as cute, innocent or girl crush based primarily on the girls' looks and dancing ability. The MMM members were either retreads from other agencies or were rejects plucked from the scrap heap of kpop auditions. None of them were considered prime idol material. For example, Solar had been rejected by over 40 agencies because she was thought to be too old and Hwasa had been bluntly told she was fat and ugly at an audition with another company. The combination of Kim Dohoon's vision for the group and the fact that RBW didn't have the staff or financial resources to support and promote Mamamoo meant that the girls were involved in all creative aspects of their career from the beginning. They wrote or co-wrote songs, did their own choreo and styling, collaborated with KDH on the vocal arrangements, and contributed to the concepts for MVs. Along with not being limited to one of kpop's typical girl group concepts they also weren't limited to a specific musical style to match that image and so they've been free to explore many genres of music and as a result they have one of the most diverse discographies of any group in kpop or anywhere else. They've carved out their own niche in kpop and though musically they're all over the map they've developed their own unique, trademark style and sound that has led to people saying that Mamamoo is a genre unto themselves. Folks also say that Mamamoo can sing anything and write a song about anything and they're not far off the truth. On the flip side very few singers can cover a Mamamoo song and be convincing. Mamamoo has obviously marinated their vocal chops in a thick sauce of classic r&b, jazz and hip hop. Some of the singers they've covered or named as influences include Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Kehlani and Nancy Wilson. Though at times they also show the influence of gospel I have never heard that any of them sang in church choirs when they were young. Hwasa is a Catholic and took the name Maria when she was baptized. Hwasa & Wheein have been best friends since middle school and I believe Hwasa talked Wheein into being baptized as a Catholic but I've never heard that Wheein is particularly religious. Solar is a buddhist so it's unlikely she sang in a church choir. I don't know anything about Moonbyul's religious beliefs or choir singing. The lineup you saw in the Killing Voice and their initial lineup in the Immortal Songs Medley is their standard formation. From left to right: Moonbyul, Solar (leader & eldest member), Wheein, Hwasa (maknae). You'll almost always see them lined up in that order. If you met Hwasa you might be overwhelmed by emotion but you wouldn't be intimidated by her personality. She's an absolute beast on stage but in real life she's a cuddly furball. I second the recommendation to get to know the members via Purple Hawke's two-part guide called Introducing Mamamoo.

Since when did Solar become a Buddhist? The only Buddhist relation I know of is Hwasa’s mom. Also Hwasa mentioned recently that although she grew up catholic, she isn’t religious. She got the name Maria when she was baptized as a baby but that’s as far as religion goes

I fell into mamamoo hole 🕳️ last year.. and it's so fun cuz I feel like I'm rewatching my journey through your's, all i can say is.. besties.. it's ONLY the beginning. You should take a look to their pre-debute song : "don't be happy", or their debute era "piano man" or "Mr ambiguous". You'll be shook how girlies came on the scene already stepping on half the industry when It comes to vocals.

Backstory - As a group 'mamamoo' they trained for 3 yrs. SOLAR - from GANGSEO,Seoul - was in college aspiring to be a fight attendant. HWU - MAJOR IN TOURISM. She once participated in a lottery show to get gifts(money?) So she sang a song- caught attention- thought she could become a singer-parents disagree-got rejected in 40 auditions- Finally made it! Yay!! MOONBYUL- from Bucheon,Sk. Wanted to become vocalist - got rejected for her weight- kicked out from a gg last min for the same reason) - the said gg also had Wheein - Serious dieting - asked to be a rapper - broken confidence - But made it finally! Yay!! WHEEIN JUNG - from Jeonju- do, SK -small village girl big city dreams- with her BFF (now Hwasa of MMM) - raised by her grandma - lots of trouble coz of her bg father- the 1 w no siblings - wants to become an icon - was maknae in gg who disbanded a week before their debut - High expectations low responses = 📉 confidence - buy she also made it! Yay!! HWASA - Jeonju-do girl - small village girl,big city dreams- came to Seoul with BFF (now WHEEIN of MMM) - father disagree first but excepted later - supportive uncle in Seoul- Had hardest time to get excepted for WHO SHE IS - there's a lot in her story - can't explain - RIHANNA & BEYONCÉ are lyf. hwasa is actually catholic, so there is at least one member that went to church lol. whitney houston is a fave of solar’s and she even sang i will always love you for her audition. she didn’t start singing seriously and taking lessons until she was like 19-20 though. she was singing for fun on the street one time and a scout came up to her and asked her to audition for a company. they noticed her talent and potential even on the street 😌

Lady marmelade?? Hwasa did cover the song for a variety show project called "I Live Alone (girl's secret party)". Technically not a singing cover and not mamamoo though. Only hwasa and the other 2 member of the variety show (one is a commedianne and the other is a model). I personally am a big fan of the show. 'I live alone' is the show that introduce me to hwasa very firstly. But the mv itself is quite fun to watch! Mamamoo origin story it's destiny practically Hwasa and Wheein where middle school friends and got to work in Seoul as trainees and Moonbyul was around agency too in training, Wheein and Moonbyul even got as a group for like a week before all going in the same agency, solar debuted late actually her dream was to became a flight attendant! Then at some point she was asked by someone to became an idol so she started wondering if she could actually do music and started to a lot of auditions abd tryouts she said she even failed more than 50 of them at the very last it was for Rbw entertainment which brought Mamamoo together, it's a crazy story 😂 the reason why they aren't international well you see they didn't promote a lot in the world yes they did concerts because of demand but they never even got to Europe, you basically have to imagine a female BTS with a really bad Big hit who don't promote them well or don't promote them at all, also probably the fact that nobody talks English even tho it seems this year they're doing their best to learn English

Mamamoo have the similar story as bts. So ig you've an idea of the struggles of coming from a new/poor company. So didn't had the platform so it's relatively harder to find Mamamoo than finding grps from the big 3. Mamamoo paid their agency's debt of over 2B k-won (nearly 1.7 M usd) within a yr and 8 months. But after that the things turned. As soon as the revenue started coming their agency focused in 'Branching out' strategy of building more money...which was incase good but..for 'short terms' . Buying new buildings, Branching to other countries (like vietnam) when your first Group is still rookie. Basic requirements like 'Eng subs' are still not looked upon and it's been...8 yrs. *I* *mean* it doesn't matter how well you sing if you keep singing behind close doors....and no one can listen you. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hwasa is so gentle and such a sweetheart off stage; it's like Hwasa vs. Ahn Hyejin (her real name). It's the best of both worlds! She's the maknae, and (although she doesn't like to admit it) totally acts like it sometimes. People call MAMAMOO “controversial” cause they are not afraid to speak for themself. They have already called out their company a bunch of times and don’t like to be put inside a box, like Korean beauty standards and how to behave in a Korean society. Sure, they have done mistakes in the past, but apologized and never did the same thing again, but when it comes to those silly fanwars, they always bring those things back and it’s super tiring. They have already supported woman tru their “HIP” MV. Supported LGBTQ+ community supporting a fanbase made of LGBTQ+ moomoos and performed with gender fluid dancers.

how Blackpink became popular internationally is very easy: cause they made live shows in the West, appeared in late night shows in the West, etc. they took advantage of Kpop's rise that started cause BTS, and since they were female group they hit the jackpot. Mamamoo didn't make lots of shows in the West. they made 1 fan meeting in Brazil and 1 show in US and that's all. then covid came.

Well to answer about Black pink....I always say the same thing. But mainly two things. Korea has a big beauty standard and MMM don't fit it. They are considered average. And on top of that MMM company at the time, they are growing more now, is small company compared to BP company YG. Meaning BP had and still have a bigger wide range of resources... financially. Whereas MMM didn't. When they first debuted they barely had anything. They choreographed produced composed co-work.. etc everything themselves. They were the first ever group at the time with RBW. MMM help build their company. MMM we're told many of times that they were ugly that they weren't going to make it. The CEO was also told that he should not debut them and that his career in their career will be over.. etc. Basically putting them down in front of their faces a lot. Solar went to over 50+ auditions and she was tired down by all she was told about her looks but also that she was "too old" , when she was actually only 20 at the time. But in Korea the industry wants you to be trained from a kid......which in my opinion is ridiculous. Hwasa was told she was fat, Moon as well and she was scammed at one point ..Wheein again told about her look all these girls was told off they their looks. The only company that gave them a chance was RBW. Hwasa said at one point that their CEO was the first and only person that commented on her voice rather her appearance for the first time. Everybody and everyone was against these women. Their company told them they weren't pretty or tall....etc. not in a bad way but to let them know how the public would receive them. They told them to work hard on singing to show the people their voices. And it work, though they do still for unknown reason still get a lot of hate...but they have changed the typical kpop gg in terms of looks. But they still have obstacles. Now BP, I read comments where people actually said they started listening to BP because of how they looked. Sad but this is the Korean industry, looks first, dance second and actually singing/talent last. In a group of 7 probably one or two are actually singers but the rest are dancers and or looks. And if you're from a big company you're basically set. In this case YG is a big company so BP was popular before they debuted. Where as MMM was from a small company where they actually preformed on the streets to gain a fanbase. When I say MMM started from the bottom....they literally started from the bottom. They are the only gg from a small company that won big awards and achievements. They are the only gg they also are successful solo artist as well as best selling artist. There are also wayyyy more about MMM story but this is just a little bit of what they had and still go through.

I think the German reactor Rahim put his finger on why Mamamoo isn't bigger than Blackpink... Mamamoo's songs are COMPLICATED. There's a lot going on in Mamamoo songs while Blackpink songs are quite simple musically. So Blackpink is more... approachable? Blackpink is like the musical version of Baywatch.

RBW really dropped the ball on Mamamoo. I'm glad that I got to know them while stuck in my room at the start of the pandemic. Although, coming from one of the big 3 companies dosen't always mean you get more promoting in the west. Take my bias male group EXO. Their company SM is one of the big 3 and yet they seriously did a disservice to the group by not promoting them out west. Yes, they are still huge but I think they would be way bigger if SM didn't drop the ball. To me Mamamoo and EXO are the best of the best.
