Like what Mamamoo's CEO and even the members said, Wheein is the backbone of Mamamoo. She's able to do the high notes, the airy tones and texture, deep and low tones, and honestly basically everything else needed. She harmonizes with all three members, yes even Moonbyul. And funny enough, her voice sounds almost the same as Moonbyul when pitched down XD even the members knew of this and found it fascinating XD

Bumkey is a pretty established r&b singer in sk and was one of the artists mamamoo's ceo pulled in when called in favors. And yeah, it is odd that the mv and studio versions are different, but the company seems to have chopped the whole first half of the song (bumkey focus) to introduce the group as a whole He also performed with mamamoo in their first episode of the show 'yu huiyeol's sketchbook' (often just referred to as 'sketchbook'). I suggest watching that whole episode if you can at some point because of how it was set up. Each artist did a collab with the artists before and after them, when an interview segment in between (it is an hour and a half long, though). Mamamoo was the last artist on the show and their performance with bunkey was an amazing cover of "all of me" Moonbyul used to sing one of bumkey's songs, "the lady" quite a lot and later he decided to remake the song with her as a feature, as a singer, not as a rapper. Definitely a collab worth checking out

I know others have pointed out that mamamoo doesn't really have specific positions, but you can also kind of tell that before they debuted, the company was still thinking more along the common idea of those roles. Not only did wheein get a lot of vocal focus, esp in the third song, but both videos gave her focus as a dancer, especially "peppermint chocolate". It kind of seems like they were considering her as a main dancer role before deciding just not to do roles at all Also... yeah, sadly, early on they didn't always know what to do with moonbyul, so you'll come across songs without her at all. And some of her early rapping is in a painfulky high pitch that couldn't have been comfortable for her

He may get mentioned again when you get to wheein's solo "goodbye", but we'll see Also, there is a livestage of "peppermint chocolate" where ravi (formerly of vixx, same group the two male dancers are from) does wheesung's part. It is funny to mention this because ravi is the ceo of the l1ve, wheein's agency as a solo artist

All the vocalists of Mamamoo pair really well with male vocals, some of their collabs are spectacular. There are no positions in Mamamoo except vocals, rapper, and performer (dance). No lead or main positions.

back in 2014 when mamamoo had their debut, it was common in KPOP to have a more established singer, be a feature but because the singer is presumed to be older and established they usually get most of the singing time, sort of a sign of respect. For some reason their CEO purposely put Solar and Wheein out there more and less so on Hwasa and Moonbyul. The story is because Moonbyul was being showcased as a rapper only, RBW kept her mainly out of the songs, and in peppermint chocolate the few times she does rap it is higher pitched than she actually does. Hwasa, since you know the back story was also being kept on the downlow because her appearance was already causing the simpletons to have issues, really all of them but her especially. heeheehaheho has no MV and I dont know the back story on why moonbyul was left out. My most played song is Peppermint Chocolate 2021 MMM version. in 2021 they released a Best album where they remade these 3 songs, Mr Ambiguous, Piano man and a number of other early songs but for songs like these they had Hwasa or Moonbyul do the parts of the featured artists instead making them MMM versions. This was Covid so they did do a live streamed concert of these songs, which I did see(also saw them live this year). In the live performance they redid the peppermint chocolate and Make me happy with the intro MV(and did a nearly 4 hour concert live purposely never leaving the stage). Solar is my personal bias but she is the Leader of the group not the lead singer. They dont have positions.

Sorry - we forgot to advise you that if you want subtitles for MMM MVs made before 2018 you have to watch them on their yt channel rather than whatever comes up with a standard yt search. There are always 2 official MVs, one on MMM's channel and another on a music distribution channel like Stone Music Entertainment or 1theK and prior to 2018 almost none of the alt MVs are subtitled. Subtitles are crucial for certain MVs like Mr Ambiguous and Um Oh Ah Yeah but I won't spoil them by telling you why. RBW doesn't make it easy for i-fans to put it mildly. MMM started out with a bunch of songs incorporating jazz, swing and 60's rock & soul and their first few albums are called their Retro Era. RBW was a startup company and Mamamoo was their first group so they had little money, a small staff and almost no clout in an industry monopolized by the Big 3 agencies at that time. RBW's co-CEO Kim Dohoon is a well-known songwriter who's written songs for many prominent artists and he called in a bunch of favors from folks he'd written songs for to feature or make cameos in MMM's early songs & MVs to bring attention to the new group. I don't really have an explanation for the two versions of Don't Be Happy other than the MV being an introduction to MMM. Peppermint Chocolate featured cameos by two members of boy group VIXX in the dance scenes. Though DBH and PC were pre-debut songs they've always been two of my favorites and I always go back to them between comebacks. The girls recorded a new version of Heeheehaheho without Geeks for their 2 cd career retrospective album I Say Mamamoo: The Best in 2021. The only real positions in the group are Solar as the leader and Moonbyul as the main rapper. RBW has labelled Solar as the main singer but that's misleading since it implies that Wheein and Hwasa are lesser singers and that's obviously not true. Wheein is really the backbone of MMM's vocal line and the way I think of it is that Wheein often holds down the vocal fort, leaving Solar and Hwasa free to play and go wild (not that Wheein doesn't have those moments too). In recent years Moonbyul has been doing more singing and has become another weapon in their vocal arsenal while Solar included rap in her most recent solo song. Rather than having clearly defined roles as singers & rappers they're a 4X4 team of all stars and best friends. :)

Moonbyul changed her rap style during the Decalcomanie era (their 4th comeback). She started growling more and utilizing her full deeper speaking voice, hence why her style has evolved so much. Wheein and Solar even joked back then during a Vlive that Moonbyul's rap had gotten super aggressive. Personally, I prefer that high pitch rap more when she's rapping fast (it feels more direct whilst being delicate), although her deep voice is nice too. Fun fact btw, Moonbyul learned rap from Solar in the early days lol. She calls Solar her rap teacher. XD

Sorry for spamming comments, I drop comments as I watch the video haha Now that you mentioned Moonbyul's tone...yes during pre-debut to maybe Piano Man era, Moonbyul used a bit more higher tone when she raps because at that time, it was the trend and most known female rappers have those higher toned voices. As time passed by and as Moonbyul discovered more of her personal style + what the fans liked, she started to use more of her lower tone. Like what I said in the other comment, mamamoo did release an album with re-recorded songs from their pre debut/debut era, and you will really notice the change in moonbyul's tone in rapping. And oh, all these featurings are not in the said re-recordings. So basically they made mamamoo only versions of these predebut songs. Which meant including moonbyul/more moonbyul parts ^^

Before debut but Solar was still Solar, Wheein was still Wheein, etc. As far as I can tell, Wheein has the most technically skilled vocals of idols (I don't know boy groups) with Wendy and Solar close behind. If you get to the 2Yoo cover of Peppermint Chocolate, at the end they are doing the Dreamcatcher pronoun thing with the "guy like you, girl like me" lyrics between two women. Listen for yoe-ja (girl) and nahm-ja (guy).

To give you a background, Immortal Songs is a show where they feature a composer/artist in an episode and various artists that are guests in that said episode will perform a cover of that featured composer/artist's song. Then every perf, the audience will vote which perf they liked more until there's one winner. Dreamcatcher performed a song called Balloons! Altho originally it's by an old band named Five Fingers, it's more popular version is the remake version by DBSK (and i think it's the ver that Deukae did a cover of). DBSK was a very huge group back then esp during 2nd gen kpop. So big that their fandom was even featured in the world records for having the biggest fandom lmao. They basically ruled the countries that consumed the most kpop back then: S.K, Japan and China. Anyway 😅 A FEW groups win Immortal Songs, because very talented artists/solo singers perform in this show and is much more known by the audience (audience are more of the general public and not the usual "fans" of kpop groups). One of those few groups is Mamamoo. They appeared a lot in that show during the earlier eras that they managed to have an Immortal Songs medley in one of their concerts (u have to check that out). These appearances in Immortal Songs really helped Mamamoo get known to the general public, so I'm so glad Dreamcatcher had a guesting in it again. I hope the gen public notices them more 🙏

I have the same feeling with you. I think Wheein took a lot of vocal focuses in early period, and she became the vocal support, like harmonizing, for other members in later period. Sadly, Most people only focus on the shining aspects of other members but ignore the backbone of MAMAMOO. I became a MOOMOO in 2019. At first, my bias had been Moonbyul for 1 year, and then changed to Solar for half a year. Finally, I have confirmed my bias to be Wheein until now and l can’t Whee out anymore.

I think they have always named themselves as Loser Crew (or in korean, Jjijil Crew), but they officially mentioned it during one of the special viewing when the 3 of them attended withouth Solar because she was injured and in the hospital at that time. They introduced themselves as The Jjijil Crew (Loser Crew), and said that that viewing/ fanmeet time was going to be boring.. But MAMAMOO being MAMAMOO, it just got even more chaotic because their Mama Yong wasn't around to supervise them. Okay first of all, Mamamoo don't have a main positions in group. Just 4 vocalist, 4 dancer, 4 rappers, 4 visuals. Cause, all the members hate that idea ( main positions ) Iirc in the pre-debut and early mamamoo era ( hello albums ) Moonbyul was still training as a rapper. It's bcause she did the audition for vocalist not a rapper. Mamamoo members trained only 3 years before they debut. Moonbyul and hwasa train their rap technique for 1 year before they debuted That's why moonbyul just have a little part in pre debut era, But compare to Moonbyul now. She's the GOAT. She's the only female idol on the top 25 artist most credited on komca with 117 songs. My rich friend, moonbyuli 😂 Hwasa just rocked up and flexing her ability, so nothing to say about her. Just perfect in every way and fatal as always. 😅 Solar was training for a proper vocal technique for chest powerful belting. But our leader solar the yeba finally did a great job with her voice. What a powerful voice 🤭 The only reason why wheein got a lot part on their pre debut era is.. she had to do her job as the golden child and the backbone from mamamoo. And even now many vocal coach said that wheein had the best vocal technique from the other. Proud of her our puppy did a great job too. 😁
