The line of the end of Where Are We Now "the two of us shared the same dream" hits extra hard because it's Hwasa and Wheein singing it together, and they were friends when they were younger and they are now both in Mamamoo together

Mamamoo's follow-up hip hop song Sleep In the Car was about shooting order on overnight m/v shoots when they had to get in full make-up and wait to go last. Like Taller Than You, it was actual passive-aggressive banter they did the CEO thought was funny and said to make a song out of it. It goes way harder than a silly song needs to. One of the lines in an actual song they composed, produced, and released to the public Wheein's just, "Yeah, we're making this into a song again."

MAMAMOO did a number of commercial songs, all of them are great (perhaps except for "Taste The Feeling" for Coca Cola, which is literally the song from Coca Cola's 2017 campaign, but sung in Korean). Their CF songs are always top tier: - "Girl Crush" (2015) for the video game "Inisia Nest": kzbin.info/www/bejne/raOkqH6Deqp7jrc - "Woo Hoo" (2016) for LG G5 & Friends: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e52sZnyPott2eNU - "Everyday" (2018) for Maeil Bio yogurt: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gny5qGemichkftU - "Sky! Sky!" (2018) for the mobile game "Icarus M": kzbin.info/www/bejne/f16yg3hmhbdlsM0 This is the most cringeworthy MAMAMOO video in my opinion. They portrayed a lovely, cutesy concept more appropriate for a group like GFriend, but it was not fitting for MAMAMOO. But you still really have to see and hear it.. - WANNA BE MYSELF (2020) for the athleisure brand "Andar": kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZyQoqyIZ5dnnLc

When Where are we Now came out, it was just before the 7 year anniversary and Wheein had still not signed. She wound up signing with RBW for Mamamoo (until Dec 2023) and another company for solo work. More than most groups Mamamoo is all about being with their fans. They are both at their best live and draw so much energy from the crowd. Covid hit them really hard since they couldn't be in front of a live audience. You can tell that there is an edge missing in their various virtual performances. In the WAW documentary (two hours it's subbed in 4 parts a great choice to watch on patreon) Moonbyul mentions that it just wasn't fun anymore. Being able to be with live audiences in the last few months has turned that around.

"Taller than you" has an interesting backstory... the girls would frequently bicker over their heights, despite each pair only being 1 cm apart (this was even caught as recently as "egotistic" promotions, in mmmtv, years after "taller than you was released"). Their ceo suggested they write a song about that as a way to vent their frustrations, to keep from having those feelings build up... and also because he thought it was funny. So, "taller than you" was born. They actually do skits based around this song in all their concerts since the song was released, typically with members either growing crazy tall or crazy short (all are hilarious to watch) Funny enough, their follow-up hiphop song, "sleep in the car", was created due to the playful bickering sleep-deprived solar and wheein were doing at 3 am during the mv shoot for "taller than you". Complaining about long video shoots, needing to nap in the car in full makeup and otherwise just venting about idol life. Again, the ceo saw some of this and suggested they make another song of it (and even that mention got put into the song)

There is a documentary associated with WaW that gives some insight into the song. Their most beautiful song, IMO. But to me it always felt like a "we're breaking up" song. Particularly when they announced afterwards that Wheein didn't renew her contract with RBW. All that seems to be resolved now. For another advertisement song, check out I Wanna Be Myself. :)

When I watched Solar's Honey, it felt like a bit of a commentary on being beautiful, like how she and many Kpop stars have people drawn to them because they're pretty, and on one hand she's like Uh YEAH I AM (not to quote another song), but on the other hand she had that mask and it's like, she's able to USE her looks as a piece of her that other people see and want, without ever really giving those people who she is inside. Like, a way to feel control in a scenario where eyes and egos are constantly drawn to you and wanting some of whatever you've got. (Granted, I might be overanalyzing, haha. wouldn't be the first time!) Just recently found your channel and am really enjoying your reactions btw! Cheers from a fellow Ontarian in her early 30s that loves Mamamoo, ha!
@kudgeond7552 жыл бұрын
I don't think you're overanalyzing. I have a similar take on Honey. The mask represents her Solar persona but the people who love Solar for her beauty, sex appeal and celebrity don't know her for who she really is as Kim Yongsun. I think the white set represents that one dimensional, superficial way of perceiving her and the colors represent the multi-faceted woman she is inside. The folks who put her on a pedestal are going to be let down because she's not going to try to live up to their expectations or pay attention to the things people say about her in the press or social media. Her true colors emerge when she destroys the white busts and smashes those idealized versions of Solar. :)

The horns especially in solar's "honey" remind me quite a bit of a song she did with luna of the group f(x) and hani of the group exid. The song is "honeybee" and... just a warning, you won't be ready for it. Nobody ever really is. We need more collabs like that one... I definitely suggest solar's "spit it out", hwasa's "twit" and both "watercolor" and "make me happy" from wheein because there is a stage they've been doing at their current concerts that uses all those songs as well as solo songs you've already checked out ("maria", "honey", "eclipse"). There are videos of it on yt and it is very, very much worth checking out once check off all those songs

You've already listened to different genres Mamamoo tried so I would recommend going towards some of their rock concepts : 'My Star', 'Gogobebe rock version' or '4x4' might be good candidates! Also Wheein's solos are so good and diverse !! I would strongly advise you to listen to 'Watercolor' and Moonbyul's 'Lunatict' then get to their 'MIC ON solos stage'. It's amazing!

Taller Than You does have captions, on their channel (MAMAMOO). Ironically, that video only has the Korean title ([MAMAMOO] 1CM의 자존심, "1cm Pride"). Gleam also has subtitles. BTW, you might have missed the pun: the Korean title is 다 빛이나 "da bichina" which means "everything shines", but the glasses brand is Davichi ("dabichi" in Korean, since it doesn't have the "v" sound).

You were pretty spot on with "where are we now" being a reflection on their time together thusfar, and others have added good bits to that in the comments already, so i won't really blab much more about it. I will point out two things, however: First, the song included the slogan fans used to bring mamamoo to tears early on, 'never letting go', so they ensured the fandom was included in this retrospective of a song. (Also, they put references to earlier songs and such in the camper they were using, though many are easy to miss even for the eagle-eyed) And second, they are absolutely still enjoying what they're doing, especially together. You can see and feel the sheer joy they exude while performing together at their concerts that are going on right now, and they're constantly talking about being glad to be together right now since they all struggled with being alone while working on/promoting their solo works. They're not planning on going away any time soon, even though there's a good chance they won't stay at the same agency past this year

Mamamoo actually has a good number of cf songs, and they tend to be fan favorites, too The majority are created by the duo of cosmic sound (composer/producer) and cosmic girl (singer/songwriter) who also do a lot of popular b-sides for them and other artists (esp rbw artists). Many of these songs you'll hear the 'cosmic' audio tag in at the beginning Cosmic girl likes wordplay in her lyrics (similar to hwasa) and frequently tries to work the name of the brands they're promoting into the cf songs. She did this for "gleam" (davich optical), "wanna be myself" (andar sports/athleisure wear) and "everyday" (mael bio, a yogurt brand). She also wrote "woohoo" (lg devices) but that was before both the wordplay stuff (though byul worked some into her rap) and the audio tag It seems mostly the video game related cfs are the ones the cosmic duo aren't involved in. An adorably quirky early one for a mobile game is "girl crush", a later one for a different mobile game kinda has the fans divided. "Sky sky" is disliked by many fans, though most tend to just dislike the video (mamamoo themselves love the song but hate to be reminded of the mv). Hwasa also has a solo cf for lg monitors ("be alright") that she released on her birthday sans the ad's explosions and such. She also has a song for the sims 4 and several commercials for it, though i'm unsure if it is actually considered a cf or not (some of thede commercials include her junior group, purple kiss)
@moni130002 жыл бұрын
They really do go hard on their CFs. Not only did the lyrics really center on the concept of vision, but it’s called Da Bichi (sp?), which translates to everything gleams. It’s a play on the brand’s name, Davichi. Their writing is always so clever. Also, this song was released during their 4 seasons era, so that’s why it felt like it had Starry Night/Egotistic vibes. 😊

Tremendous how we went from WAWN to Honey hahahaha. It looks like my playlist going from Dont (by ft. Namjoon) to Honey I love your reactions. The official music video for "Taller Than You" has subtitles but if it's a bit difficult to find it or for it to appear when you search for it kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2GVd2Siq82aq9k , I'll leave it in case anyone wants to enjoy the mv and the lyrics. Oh dear Where Are We Now, having the background that this was for their 7 years of debut and almost 10 years of knowing the four of them, and several more for Hwasa and Wheein. The lyrics are interpreted differently and each line takes on a special meaning for them and the fans. The song is already sentimental but especially after watching the documentary WAW it is impossible for me to listen to it without crying and remembering the scenes, thoughts and doubts they shared. How they share their longing for debut days, their bond between them, what "MAMAMOO" means for each one, not wanting to let go of something that makes them happy, their gratitude and affection for the group and the fans; but also the doubts and the fact of making decisions, feeling the passing of the years in them, that each one feels with these 7 years. They tell us about a change and how each one has grown and they have dreams and goals, how important it is that they communicate and how each one cares about the others. They show their affection for Mamamoo but without forgetting the affection and concern they have for the others. It is understood that they continue with MAMAMOO out of love and happiness and not by force.

Dissing each other over the 1cm between them. The introduction of rapper Wheein and Solar. I use KPop profiles and use the approx real height and not the official height as the official hight can be taller then real. Byul- 5’4”/163.4 cm (real)/165 cm (5’5″) (Official) Solar- 5’3”/160.5 cm(real)/163 cm (5’4″) (Official) Hwasa- 5’3″/160 cm (real)/ 162 cm (5 ft 3¾ in) (Official) Wheein- 5’3”/158.9cm (real)/ 162 cm ( 5 ft 3¾ in) (Official) I am 173cm/5’8” Blonde Byul from Gleam! Gleam was a collab ad with a glasses company. This was done around Gogobebe era as White Wind’s album would have been the end of the 4 seasons. I believe Wanna be Myself was a collab with an active wear brand. Where are we now.. how many KPop groups not only have a comeback with a ballad but release an entire mini album of ballads? I wish we had more Byul vocals in Where are we now. I love the white suit that Byul wore. There are so many little Easter eggs in that trailer from other mvs. Honey.. Solar sing, Solar rap. The Hangul used for Face is also pronounced Yong so she was making a play on her name despite the Yong in her name being the same Hangul as dragon. They have a song called Sleep in the car that came about by how much they complained about always having to sleep in the car and someone told them to just make it a song.

Unpaid recommendation: I really like Color-Coded Lyrics for translations. Not only do they have the English translation, they also have the Romanization of the Korean lyrics, all side by side, color-coded to the person singing the line. Plus they do many many songs and groups that are relatively obscure, not just title tracks or Big Three groups. Some songs have lyric pages that have outlived the music video, i.e., the video has been deleted but the lyrics still survive.

Lol taller than you is hilarious. They are mainly dissing Kpop idol standards for females, part of their backstory is they were told they are basically unattractive because they dont fit the standard for an Idol including their height. But this song is used in concert with a 20 minute comedy skit, which starts animated, of them voicing themselves which becomes live action with Wheen "normal" as in unchanged from being supertall animated, solar and hwasa have costumes with no legs and moonbyul has puppet legs and they eventually get to the song. yeah in concert they do more than sing. Gleam is like their other OSTs, insanely good songs which could be albums on their own. Where are we now is just beautiful. Honey, well Solar is not just by Bias by my favorite living singer(Prince is the best) so Honey is unreal, yes Solar, I see you with honey in my eyes. Solar did release a live performance video of all 5 songs from her album, worth watching. As is that karaoke she release on Solarsido which has one of her Mata Hari songs. Another good one is fan cam but would be each member singing one of the other member's solos, Wheein sings Honey in the yellow outfit, Solar sings Water color dressed in Wheeins blue fit, Hwasa does Eclipse and Moonbyul does Twit, then all 4 together sing 4 other solos as a group. If you realy want to tear up watch the moosical 2014 I Love Too. In their 2021 concert, they did a little magic trick and solar pulled out a banner that said something like they will be together on the endless stage. I cant remember even though I watched the concert live
