In the early 70s, I met Mrs. Eisenhower in Gettysburg when I was a kid (my mom ran into her in the ladies room at the Gettysburg battlefield visitors center). She was very charming and asked me about school, travel (my dad was an officer in the Army), sports, and more. She couldn't have been nicer to me and my entire family.

Fun fact: Mamie Eisenhower was a die-hard fan of the soap opera “As the World Turns.” The tight ship she ran in the White House meant that staff had to make sure that she had no appointments while the show aired. And if there was ever a day when she couldn’t watch the show, she made other people watch it and take notes so that she wouldn’t miss anything.

I remember the day she died. I was in my 9th grade English class when the news came over the loud speaker. For whatever reason, I was shocked even though I didn't know much about her at the time.

A question to what the lady from 3:45 to 3:48 said about Mamie Eisenhower being the last US First Lady to be born in the 19th century. She died in 1979 but didn't Bess Truman outlive her by three yrs until her own death in 1982???? Or does that lady refer to Mamie Eisenhower in chronological order as being First Lady after Bess Truman????

She was horrible to Jackie Kennedy. Jackie had lost her baby and was invited to the WH for her first viewing. Mamie never offered to get Jackie a wheel chair, nor did she invite Jackie to sit down and rest. Jackie said she could barely stand on her feet.

Mamie Eisenhower was actually one of the most truly amazing and incredibly warm-hearted and hospitable First Ladies Of The 20th century that America has ever known and that she was also the First Lady Of The US in 1960 when my dad was born and she’ll also never be forgotten either for her pink inaugural ball gown worn back in 1953 that is now the very image of what we remember of Mamie in her official First Lady Portrait inside of the White House that now represents and reflects on her 8 years in Washington😭😭😭😭 RIP Mamie Eisenhower you’ll always be remembered Truly Forever ! 😭😭😭😭!

It is always appropriate to speak well of those passed, but Ms. Robin Gerber's recitals do not carry the weight of evidence and experiences shared by many who knew "the General's wife / first lady". It is an extremely difficult life to be a spouse of one committed to military service and no doubt Mamie suffered.

It was insensitive, but just so you know, Mamie Eisenhower actually was known for hosting black women's groups at the White House and integrating the Easter Egg Roll. And for the record, she also suffered from numerous health complications that may have put in her in bad moods some days (she was hospitalized at least once or twice IIRC).

Hate to rain on this parade but she was also an alcoholic who slept until noon and shall we say had southern tendencies. I prefer Bess Truman for total honesty which is completely lacking in todays world.

Actually she WASN'T an alcoholic, she suffered from a health condition in the inner ear known as Meniere's Disease, which affected her balance. Mamie wasn't perfect, but from the health issues she had, it's honestly amazing how much she was able to achieve during her time in the White House with Ike. The image of her as an out of touch or "Do Nothing" First Lady is completely false, she was pro-integration and even called for more women to get in public office.

So sad that Ike took up with Kay Summersby, his secretary, with whom he had an explicit affair. According to President Harry Truman, President Eisenhower wanted to divorce Mamie. Kay Summersby's book "Past Forgetting" (published 1975) is open about the affair.

+RetroGuy -- Your account of Mamie in the White House paints a picture of an unpleasant woman, oh yes. I'm amazed that you had so much information about her snooty personality. One of the most striking takeaways is how the American public knew so little about what actually went on inside the halls of political power. There is Jackie Kennedy's account of how Mamie was inconsiderate of Jackie's pregnancy during the transition, when they met at the White House.

Harry Truman never said that. If you read the book Plain Speaking it says that Truman did say that. However Plain Speaking has some false information in several chapters.

Wow, this video is INCREDIBLY shallow and COMPLETELY misses the mark on Mamie's work as First Lady. She was FAR from just a party hostess, she supported racial integration and even invited black women and families to the White House for conferences or events like the Easter Egg Roll. Beyond this, she helped recover a number of White House artifacts and also publicly called for more women to serve in public office. I wouldn't call THAT a simple housewife.

Slight correction to what Suzy wrote -Mamie thought Vice President Nixon would win the election .after the election when Kennedy won Mamie felt bad for Nixon wife with whom she was close, so on the day of white house tour when the newly elect president comes to meet the outgoing president Mamie wasn't kind (didn't offer her a wheel chair)to Jackie who had just given birth to John Jr and had difficulty in walking.

@MrHoppers002 That hardly pardons her inconsideration. She obviously knew that Jackie had just had a baby. It was common knowledge to everyone in Washington.
