In this video I head to downtown Los Angeles with my Mamiya RB67. The goal is to do a casual black and white film comparison in a couple of different locations.
The films being compared are ilford Delta 100, Kodak TMX 100, and Rollei RPX 100.
Following shooting in the field, I show a side by side comparison with unedited scans in Lightroom.

Hey John I have the exact same issue I can’t advance the film without engaging the slider which then pops up the red flag I can then advance thinking I need a new back.

Yeah, I stopped using the 6x45 back. It’s easier with the 6x7 pro SD backs. Find/use those if you can.

It's still up in the air for me which film to use. I've been flipping a coin on something with more contrast (for less post-processing) or something flat. Thanks for watching

@@JohnDoukasPhotographyI’ve since shot rollei film love the results from RPX and retro I tend to use the film I can get cheapest currently ilford FP4 is the best value. I’ll love hard contrast 📷❤️📷

Off topic… did you know your pro-SD back has a sleeve for the dark slide? It may just be habit.

Through what I can see on KZbin, in the first and second image there is no difference between highlights on Rollei or on Ilford, it just looks like Rollei just has smaller dynamic range. I would be curious about the scanning process because usually BW film is not that contrasty and can retain a lot of highlight detail. My scans look very grey as I try to retain all the info and edit the files later. Your scans look already cooked from the start.

Nae Dolor I agree; the highlights are only truly ‘blown’ if the density of the negative is maxed out and there is no detail there. I wonder what the scanning procedure was as perhaps the white point was not set correctly. The contrast is high too and so it looks like there has been some default scanning settings that could have been tweaked for a better comparison. Still an interesting video though, thanks for sharing!

You can find the manuals for your RB67 at orphancameras.com, knowing how to properly use your own equipment has its benifits. Keep up the good work!
