Lately, it's felt like KZbinrs assume people will watch anything film-related, and consequently camera reviews have gotten pretty boring. So hats off to you for finding that perfect balance between entertaining, informational and engaging. Really great review! Glad you're back.

Click on a couple film related KZbin videos and YT will feed you anything with the proper tags and people that can market. Unfortunately a lot of great information gets buried out there.

For anyone shooting handheld without the optional hand grip and eye level viewfinder, it helps a lot to use a camera strap. If you look in the camera manual there's a unique explanation of how to actually wrap (yes, wrap) your camera strap around your left wrist. It brings the waist level viewfinder all the way up to your eye and greatly stabilizes the camera.
@timo37982 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I just got a strap and it already increased handling the camera for me. Since I'm someone who always wraps the strap around his hand and wants to have the camera ready so this will definitely be nice!

The prism viewfinder makes all the difference in the world. It's bulky and adds more weight to an already heavy camera, but viewing subjects naturally instead of backward is a huge improvement.

I am very, very luck to own this camera in mint condition with 6 lenses and the original prism finder. It is a beauty, all solid metal, no cheap plastic, it just looks and feels GREAT. As for the weight is concerned, make a note, if you are a wimp with weak arms then stay away from it. My collection of this camera, the lenses, the prism finder and 5 film backs are a rare find & someday it will be worth ...., that does not matter, this camera is the one which will accompany me with my Nikon F2A all the way till. I walk into the sunset, I am 76

I used Mamiya 645s back in the day and always wanted one of these. I like the deliberate process that comes with a big, heavy camera and may get one. I had a 5x7 view camera too but don’t think I want to lug one that cumbersome around again.

I have an RB with the accessories you describe. I use a neck strap and shoot waist level almost all the time. The viewfinder is gorgeous and the bellows focusing lets me get as close as a foot from my subject. It's my most versatile and most used medium format camera. I found the grip and prism finder to be just too heavy. The prism finder feels like it's made of cast iron!

I wanted to get into medium format specifically for the waist level viewfinder, but I went with the RB67 because of the rotating back, the option to switch backs and even use a 6x4.5 back, and the lack of electronics meaning I don't need to keep a spare battery to use the camera

Another awesome video Kyle cheers. Way back pre-digi days I wanted the RB for my wedding work, but the price stopped me, I settled for the much smaller Bronica ETRSi which I never once regretted that 645 camera has served me well right up to last month when a rouge wave fried the thing gutted....yep totally. On the plus side a work mate was about to toss her old RB67 Pro S kit in the bin, and asked if I wanted to use it and record the experience on my channel, I screamed hell yeah...then told her how much these beasts are on ebay......not sure she's overly keen to dump it now....

Your videos and photos are really top drawer. I'm a Rollei TLR guy for many years, but always respected Mamiya a lot, my Uncle made a really nice living with a pair of them. The people I knew that used Pentax 67's always had to have 4 or 5 bodies because they were often malfunctioning and some were always in the shop for expensive repairs, and you need at least two so you could shoot with one while your assistant loaded the other. With RB you could just pre-load backs.

I’m using an RB67 for many years now and love it but it comes at an cost... this thing is build like a tank but it’s weight reflects this. I’ve taken this behemoth to South Africa on an photo-safari and yeah it worked but an RB with two lenses, two backs, an exposure meter and an 2x Tele converter is a Ton of equipment if you fly commercially! (I’ve also brought my Minolta x700 with its gear along so screw weight limitations anyway) The pictures this thing takes are awesome and it’s fun to use but working in landscape photography it’s a huge pain in the ass to carry all of this gear to the location. And one thing to consider: the Morris in this thing is huge and very heavy (it’s weights more than some compact cameras itself). If you’re shooting with long focal lengths from an tripod, make sure this thing is solid like a rock! And get at least one additional back for this baby, it just changes everything to switch between films as you like! To sum it up; this thing is just to big to be practical but on the other side it’s super fun to work with... I’ve once set up my gear on the top of a hill, just ready to shoot and a snowstorm started right before I was ready. The only options were to pack it all up or stay there hoping the weather gets better... I’ve stayed, got an incredible shot and the experience of this moment up there.

Welcome back Kyle, I’ve been using an RB67 on loan since Christmas (with the C 65/4.5) and I fell in love with it immediately to the extent that its size issues just aren’t, well, an issue! Something like a Pentax 67 is so far out of my budget with the tiny salary I earn that the RB does everything I could possibly want in for medium format photography. Look forward to more videos!

I like hand holding it. I bought the left hand grip and a strap and it makes shooting handheld pretty easy. I shoot on the streets with it using the 180/4.5 K/L. It's a big setup but it's so worth it when you see the final images from a 6x7. The detail is insane. In terms of Sekor C and K/L lenses I don't see any optical difference, none that are obvious to me. I older Sekor C I have read are made better, more metal parts. The newer K/L lenses have newer glass coatings, but have read are made from more plastic parts. Both feel great lenses to use.

I used both systems in the film days, I think one huge difference in the two systems you're talking about is that the Mamiya has a leaf shutter where the Pentax does not. However, with the type of work you are showing I would think that doesn't matter so the portability of the Pentax I would have thought would win out. Most photographers that I knew who shot with the Mamiya were studio shooters or definitely not handheld shooters. Thanks for the video.

I have been thinking about the RB67 system. The pro’s are that it is fully mechanical, has a RB and and great selection of glass. The con is the weight. I have and used the Bronica SQ series, they are nice but the pro’s are the weight is less. The cons are: it’s a square 6x6 that will usually get cropped to 645 for landscape aspect ratio and it uses a battery and electronics that are prone to failure. I asked the repair person at the local camera store which do you repair, he said they can repair Mamiya’s and cannot repair Bronica.

Kyle, one point about the size of the finder, this is a necissary evil, as to get the eyepiece far enough away from the magasine, so it doesn't smash your nose as you put your eye up to the viewfinder, also as this has a rotating back, the corners have to pass the finder's bottom, without scratching either part, as this is essential to changing orientation portrait to landscape and visa versa.

good to see a new contribution from you. Older Pentax 67 can me made more ergonomic with a right hand grip (not the usual left hand one). If you say the RB67 is awkward to use with the wait level finder, I see you going back to the Pentax at some point ;) I would say the points for the Mamiya are waist level portrait orientation, flash sync speed (leaf shutter) and changing film backs. I still use the Pentax :)

I have had a Pro SD kit for about 15 years now. Had both “C” and K/L lenses. I would only recommend K/L lenses because the fact that they will be newer and probably have seen less use. I have 90mm “C” lens with a sticky shutter. The price of a good CLA to fix that, is much more than what these lenses are worth. I think I am gonna try to service it myself at home.

k kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJ61oaieqZ1mm68 This video helped me taking the lens apart. I think slow shutter speeds are still not accurate but a simple cleaning helped with the sticky(delayed) shutter issue that I was having.

I have a Mamiya 645 with the left hand grip, and much prefer the prism finder for the 645 as the waist finder is really difficult for me to compose and focus properly. I run an 80mm and a 150mm lens with a lens hood. I am just starting to experiment with a polarizing filter for color, and looking to get an orange filter for BNW photography. The 67 is a little bigger for sure, but the 645 is still a monster and frankly, I love it! A sexy beast! Love the video!
