You often don't mention the age of fossils at particular exposures, so maybe it has to be cetacean... but the concave/convex articulation would immediately suggest mosasaur (and Cretaceous).
@MamlamboFossils Жыл бұрын
I had the same thought in my head when I found it, but that area is Miocene / Pliocene - it might have been washed down from inland which is older deposits!

Has a rainy trip collecting shark teeth and other assorted goodies here in the uk this weekend, less teeth than some other visits to the same sites but came away with a surprise whale earbone. Only the second one I've found and less than a hundred yards from where I found my first. This one was pretty beat up pre deposition and nowhere near as nice as the other one but still not displeased

Yeah, we're heading into winter this side of the world - soon there will be permanent snow on the mountains and frost in the mornings :)
@valiantwarrior4517 Жыл бұрын
@@MamlamboFossils Winter is lingering here. One ski resort got over 27 inches in the last day. A couple have had over 800 inches total this season(over 66 feet of snow)! The main valley in Utah got 2-6”. The higher than average snowfall should be great for crops and putting some water into streams and lakes. It’s been so dry for so long here that a large percentage of smaller water sources have completely dried up. I’m excited, because I now live very close to a stream that I hope to explore. Thanks for all you do, sir!

I've noticed the rocks you pick up with fossils in then tend to be a light grey or dark grey. Is that a specific type of rock that you know will have fossils? Or are the other rocks made of something that wouldn't allow fossils or too difficult to get through?
@MamlamboFossils Жыл бұрын
The gray rocks are concretions and usually contain the fossils on this area, in some other places they can be in different rocks like the ammonites on the Yorkshire coast which are in a dark shale
@SilentKaliSmoker Жыл бұрын

How do I learn what to be on the lookout for? I often spend time on the Cape South coast in South Africa in an area rich in pebbles of varying sizes. The rock there is evidently sedimentary because it is easy to spot the layering. However, up to now I haven't had any luck. There HAS to be something there, or am I on the wrong track?
@MamlamboFossils Жыл бұрын
Goeie more! There should be shark teeth washing up on some of the Cape Town beaches as well as whale bones. I haven't heard of fossils such as mosasaurs but there are definitely fossils around, Africa is much older geologically than New Zealand but it still has some recent fossils around. Let me know if you do find some! Baie dankie!
