In this video, I'm going to be looking at a play from the furusiyya treatise "Kitab al-makhzun jami al-Funun" (1470-71) specifically to do with the use of the stick, to train people in the use of the sword.
If you would like to see fencing to do with furusiyya and mamluk sword fighting, this is the video for you!

Hey Nick, hopefully you are well. Do not forget friend that this is also to be done on horse, while wheeling in an attempt to get to the left rear of the other rider. An so some of these blows would be received or delivered as a bind behind. I know it would be awkward to try but, attempt to do this while walking around the pell, or approaching it at various angles with the goal of reaching the left rear of the approach.

It's an interesting suggestion but doesn't work within the structure of dismounted drills. Dismounted drills are always front-facing, sure you can side step, diagonal step etc. but all the complicated maneuvers are designed to be on horseback, because that's where you're going to be maneuvering the most.

I’m not suggesting that this movement be used to learn footwork. However I do suggest it so that the pell, if to simulate a mounted opponent would be in motion. For example if you approach the pell where it comes to your left front, your goal would be to turn the right flank of the horse to him or to break away. If you approach lateral with the flank of the right, you would move forward and behind, often chasing their retreat. If head on from the right the actions play out most naturally with the right then the left resulting in a blow to the head having drawn an opening and binding behind (al-akdh) but other wise the same actions as the approach presenting the flank, simply due to the momentum. I know you are mainly focused on foot combat so it is probably less interesting for you, as the dynamic lessons don’t exist in such a way against a squared up opponent

I wonder if you could get a partner to help demonstrate these plays against another person
Middle Eastern swords and training are etymology, not reality
