I remember this kind of thing from my youth in the early 60s. Out of my price range, but hey... Health and safety? Who needed that? 👍

Never done us any harm....apart from Jimmy Jenkins down the road who burnt the kitchen down ( or so your mum would tell you when you asked for one )..........you were always told of a kid down the road who met with a terrible tradgedy when your parents wanted to put you off something you were badgering them for 😄

Those earlier variants with the exhaust choke run so well. Those whistles are colloquially known by enthusiasts as the “The burn yer finger’s whistle””

I thought the whistle had been swapped with the safety valve but the picture on the box shows it in the finger scorching position that its in........we made of sterner stuff back then 😁

@@TweedsGarage yes indeed can’t imagine a toy nowadays that allows kids to play with matches, flammable liquids, oil and boiling water at the same time. How marvellous it must have been to be a child back then.

Love a bit of Mamod action 🙂 Saved hard and bought myself a Mamod train set back in 1985. Ran the loco until the wheels went wobbly on the axles, then peined the centre of the axles to tighten the wheels and had a few more years out of it. Given the amount of Mamod mods available mine were minimal - fitted a Shirley safety valve bought from a work colleague for a pound (likely around 1990 as an impoverished apprentice), did some slight mods on the cylinders after reading an article by Peter Jones and then added a Goodall water filler valve and it ran a treat despite still being fired on the original meths tablets! Stripped it down over 20 years ago to fit new wheels and it never got put back together. All the bits are in a couple of big tins so maybe it could be a 2023 project 😄 Best Wishes for 2023 Allan 👍

Sounds like a plan Barney, could be the start of a 16mm gauge garden railway ( they are popular with the garden railway crowd ) and yes any financial outlay on an apprentice wage is always a big deal. Happy New year

Awesome Mr Tweed, loved the hat routine at the beginning of the video, very clever! I have only recently found your channel, and love your stuff. I have a couple of Mamods that I bring out and dust off occasionally, and get them boiling up, they are great toys from the past era, much better than all this modern digital stuff that all the youngsters get sucked into today, burning your fingertips was just learning curve for kids of the last generation, but these toys taught us well - all the best for 2023 :) Best Regards. Ade

Happy New Year, I remember my little stationary steam engine with saw mill blade, They would never sell these anymore, to many safety issues due to a lack of common sense.

I have a couple of these and a couple of the stationary engines. I am missing the steering rods for the traction engines but one of them does have the trailer with the logs on it. Unfortunately I am one log short of a full load.

Ha Ha! Allan, this brings back memories of when my friend set light to the carpet with blazing methylated spirit running hid Mamod, the flame, being invisible, got quite a good hold on the nylon carpet, and we had a hell of a job trying to explain to his mum why there was a large burn mark in the middle of the living room carpet, I still have one in a box in the barn, maybe I will dig it out and have try on the stone floor this time! Happy New Year to yo! Chris B.

@@TweedsGarage Yes it was for my friend Bruce, I did not see him for a week! The problem was being meths we did not see the flame until the nylon carpet started to get away, I think we pulled an arm chair over the hole, but the smell was a give away! I wonder how much damage was done over the year with these Mamods running around rooms crashing into furniture. Chris B.
