As someone who has worked directly with voting machines in my local county elections department, responsible for setting up and preparing them for an election I can tell you that there are numerous safeguards to each machine. Serial # of each machine, matched with the serial # for each data cartridge, matched with the person handling said machine to the video recorded of the transaction - all of this is stored in more than 1 place. The serial # CAN be matched to the corresponding County to which it belongs.

Even if it's some other reason, machines do have to be certified before and after use, and are tested multiple times throughout an election. This machine could not have been used again. Finding it in the trash does not mean the system is insecure, and your false assertion that it does shows a lack of understanding of how elections are conducted in the US.

@@imchris5000 Thats incorrect. Night vision at the time (and I'm assuming still now) is a line item. That means every single piece is receipted by serial number every time it changes hands. Items like that are checked all the time. Every time a section sgt (or platoon sgt or squad sgt) changes, they have to verify every single line item by serial number (i.e. you can't just have x of them and call it good). This also happens on a larger scale every time a unit changes commanders. It usually ends up happening several times a year for all line items in a unit. There are also random checks for all line items as well as checks for them before and after every deployment (kind of, for some items it was just easier to leave the CONUS stuff there and sign for the OCONUS stuff left behind, though that mostly applied to vehicles). Whenever an item comes up missing, it generates a report of survey. That's where a team from an outside unit comes in and inventories EVERYTHING. I've personally been on more ROS and inventory teams than I can count. There's a system (I forget the name of it, I'm not supply) where you can enter the serial number of a line item and it will tell you who it currently belongs to anywhere in the Army (it doesn't work across branches). When line items like NVGs or radios pop up on ebay or in pawn shops right out side major posts, there are people who's responsibility it is to check them against that system. The instant a serialized piece of equipment shows up, it gets tracked back to who is signed for it and it generates an ROS. If I remember right, this particular captain didn't bother to remove the serial number plates from anything he sold. At that point, he was as good as caught. Most people, even high ranking people, don't know what I just wrote here. None of it is classified though. Even the lowest supply sgt knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Friend bought a remote access point at Goodwill which is a hardware VPN businesses give to employees to work from home. He took it home plugged it in to his cable modem and booted up. He connected his computer and sure enough it connected him right to a hospital's computer network without any security. He shut it down and did a factory reset on it but shows how insecure businesses are why they get ransomware. Obviously a remote worker from that hospital lost his job took the device to Goodwill dispose of it this was back in 2021. The hospital should have removed that device from their system so it would not be able to connect. Likely they had 100's of these devices could not manage who was suppose to have them who was no longer working there.

That's a failure on the hospitals IT dept. A percentage of Work from home systems will always not be returned for any number of reasons. The credentials for that terminal should have been terminated as soon as the employee was no longer employed at the hospital. It's literally at the top of the list for steps taken when an employee is let go or quits.

It's a bit disturbing to hear they didn't know it was gone until it had been sold twice and then inquired about. Even if nothing nefarious happened beyond the theft, it's a huge red flag. Needs investigation and transparency asap. At the very least it shows that there are holes in their security processes. It was able to be stolen, donated, sold twice, and nobody would have known but luckily it was sold to someone with some integrity.

I said $10, $15 tops, and she said ok, give the cashier $15 so I did. It was a very nice looking 10 speed with a flat. I still have the bike 6 years later.

Correct, there technically are no national elections in the US, not even for state admission to the union or ratification of constitutional amendments. It’s all done at state level, with the most infamous example being how the Electoral College works, allowing a candidate to win the presidency without winning the national popular vote, which has happened twice for the Republicans already in the 21st century.
