You know, I had to do the same thing when me and my now ex wife had our son our senior year of high school. We BOTH had to go before the church, because she was the pastor’s daughter, and I was the minister of music’s son. If you know how the Baptist church was back then, then you can understand that whole situation played out. They MADE us get married, and we stayed married for four years, but had three BEAUTIFUL children in the marriage. This is an antiquated way of handling this issue in the church, and it needs to stop! We can be so religious and make “bylaws of the church” that are NOWHERE in Scripture, and that has always pushed me away from the “church”. Smh.

I have tried to support and defend many acquaintances targeted by leadership in these kinds of churches (denomination notwithstanding) in my youth. Many never leave these situations because they are equally brainwashed. Having a baby out of wedlock or in it to the wrong man are equally detrimental - and so is shame. Shame attaches to a person like a parasite. It makes these people look to their tormentors for acceptance and approval. Some even become addicted to this abusive cycle. Jesus came to take the shame and enable us to live in a way to not keep incurring it (renewed mind, renewed habits). The pastor isn’t the only problematic person that shames that young woman daily. She needs to get out of that environment so she can renew her mind with The Truth.

The problem is when pastors know the sins of their contemporaries they cover it and attempt to shut down the gossip which is truth. It’s only gossip when it’ another leader or family member. They never make the leaders sit down nor repent. When a child is molested in most congregations they tell members to pray and shut up. Those days are Over! Ok. I get the outrage. But the guy was wrong. 1. Like it or not, that man is the Sheperd of that flock. It doesn't mean he does not err, but you still have to approach that man with proper respect and humility. This wasn't anyone's business beyond church family. Baby shower is women's event to celebrate the coming of the child. The girl can and should still receive communal support. Yall seem to forget, in the early days of the church, to the best of my knowledge, Confessions were public. Over time, the nature of it has changed to so that what is discussed is kept in confidence. 4. Give the grace of Charity. I can't say I fully agree with what the Bishop has done. I understand his logic. I think there's a more nuanced way to have done this. 5. Some of you have a hard time understanding that Christian life isn't supposed to make you feel good. It's supposed to make you Holy. The way to Eternal Life is by the narrow gate and the way is hard. What you should be doing instead is offering prayer for both this young Lady and for The Pastor, instead of inciting a revolt.
