Күн бұрын

The leopard of India has many faces. It is feared, admired and leaves no one untouched. A lack of knowledge about the life of this elusive cat adds to the threat of its extinction, as many more people are killed by leopards than by tigers. This film tells the stories of a family that lost a child, a scientist that tries to understand leopard's behaviour and conservationists who aim to balance the need to conserve wildlife with protecting people.

Exactly. And they are criticizing these people who live way more off the land being more selfsufficient than they ever have. They use the products they produce every day. Coffee, cinnamon, sugar, spices, fruit you name it. Then at the same time they are preaching about population control while they live in cities with millions of people themselves, have kids, buy products from overseas because they are cheapest. The hypocrisy.

I wonder about the catch and release program. These animals don't just "live out there anywhere in the woods". They have territories and boundaries. If you move them you put them into an already occupied area so it is likely that they will return to where they came from unless they can drive out the present occupier, which will itself move to another area. I could understand the hesitancy of that cat being realeased into a strange territory. It's like you becoming a trouble to your wife so she has you released into someone elses already occupied house without their permission.

Exactly right. Or it's like dropping a child off in a strange place and expecting them to know who lives where and what game is where. Relocations aren't generally that successful. I wouldn't want someone to drop me off somewhere unfamiliar. Humans and animals must find ways to coexist. Our ancestors did it for a long time. Sometimes humans win and sometimes animals do. That said, my heart breaks for anyone who loses a child for any reason. Governments could do a lot more for their own people instead of making themselves extremely wealthy at our expense. A good portion of India doesn't even have modern plumbing and electricity. Shameful.

I have been married 5 times with 0 kids. It CAN b done by others also. All humans that have babies out of wedlock get taken away & killed. This will put a stop on something. Try it there is nothing to lose. Humans r NOT endependenceable, after all humans r just another animal. What do u think we r. We r not vegetable, we've not minerals. That leaves animals. The people commenting about the poor leopards need a reality check… killing maneating tigers and maneating leopards actually INCREASES the odds of successful conservation, as most leopards and tigers are not man eaters. When we let the man eaters live, we increase unnecessary hunting and hostility between humans and the big cats. When we take care of man eaters swiftly, the relations between the wildlife and people remains healthier.

16:34. The Rudraprayag leopard mentioned here was nothing compared to the Pana leopard and the Champawat tigress, both also man eaters that Corbett dispatched among many others. The Champawat tigress is actually still Guiness record for most human fatalities ever caused by any animal on land. The Rudraprayag leopard was famous because the Media made a deal about it. Even Corbett explained it in one of his books. Also, Corbett hunted those man eaters on foot, no forwarding on elefants or with other ppl. He argued that he felt safer having to care only about himself. He will always be the greatest. RIP.

@@twinkletwinkle4129 No. Actually the Panar man eater was hunted down way before than the Rudraprayarg one. Chronologically, the Panar Man eater was only # 3 in Corbett's man eater career. 1) Champawatt tiger. 2) Muktesar man eater. 3) Panar leopard. So, if that logic is to be followed then by the time he hunted The Rudraprayag leopard the government body count was actually more accurate than in these prior cases. The absence of India goverment records of man eater killings was prior to 1905 and the Panar leopard he killed in 1901 while the Rudraparg leopard wasn't killed until 1918. I think the mention of the fixation on the Rudraprayag leopard by the press is somewhere in The Temple Tiger book or Man Eaters of Kumaon book. Don't remember exactly, been too many years. But keep reading, you will find it.

@benthekeeshond545 5 жыл бұрын
@@PriscinaSkyy There is no such thing as invading territory or designated area for ourselves or animals. Like borders between countries, a designated area is a human creation. In nature, we all can settle anywhere we want. The same is true with the big cats. If there are conflicts, the fittest survive. This has been the case for as long as there are animals. Now, you may say that we are way overpopulated and this is due to poor leadership with no family planning education. But most of the people from this video are in dire poverty. Struggling to survive is their primary goal. I don't think it is fair to criticize them for protecting themselves against ferocious predators.
@PriscinaSkyy
@PriscinaSkyy 5 жыл бұрын
@@benthekeeshond545 No, perhaps not, but then using the very same logic, no one can criticize the leopard for doing what it needs to survive~ Sure, it may have plenty of forest to hunt behind it, but leopards (and many other predatory animals) will go for the easiest kill, if there is any available. Human children are defenceless - the easiest kill they can have. If we want the kids to be safe, then we as humans with all our technological advances should learn how to protect our lands. You can't expect to walk into a savannah or jungle and not immediately become prey. That's the animal's natural instinct. Instead of blaming it for killing our children, how about we use the advantage that only us humans have and build ourselves better protection before letting people live so close to such areas. Like you said, a designated area is a human creation. But we're not the only living things. We cannot just take all the land and make it ours. We ought to think of the lives we're affecting before we cut down forests and kill all the species that live in it. Also, in nature, we obviously cannot settle wherever we want? It takes time and planning for humans to settle into places that was previously occupied by forests or jungles, which was clearly not done in this case. Whomever designed this compound failed to see the faults in their design. Killing the leopards is not the way to go. We should learn to share the land we have with all the animals that exist as well.

Let me state the obvious….yes, the grandfather had lovely words of wisdom….but on the business end of living….someone needed to watch the kid more closely. Whether you’re in rural India, a village in Africa or a 4000 square foot tri-level in Marin County, CA….you take your eyes off such a small child for 5 minutes and some type of predator is going to harm the child. I don’t take my eyes off my dogs 🐶 in MI when they go outside to do their business. Children die in such circumstances because of ignorance and neglect, Take care of the children (or dogs 🐕) and then we can discuss philosophy.

Not being offensive but at some point India will have to put limitations on how many kids a person can have and fine them heavily, or sterilize the men and the women because their country is not sustainable at this rate. Many countries are limiting Indians from immigrating to their country. Some won't allow it, it's the developers fault, the governments fault, and the people should have known there will be wild animals like tigers leopards and wild dogs roaming around if they see deer animals of prey are not far away. They follow their food source, the same way we go to a grocery store to buy food, and if the market doesn't have what you need you go elsewhere this is the same case for predators.

Such a sad situation. Medium and large predators often have large territories and can travel vast distances. Shoving more and more of them into increasingly smaller areas also causes competition for food and territory. Jane Goodall once said she would wish there was some way to decrease the number of humans without harm or pain. I agree with her. Humans are taking more and more space for both living and farming, and it pushes animals of all kinds into tight spaces and leads to disaster for both humans and wildlife.

That has been a practice in India for centuries. Leopards typically hunt at night and often they will take a victim if, for example, an Indian decides to get up in the night and go outside his hut to answer nature's call. They attack, grab the throat and crush it and within a second, at the most, haul their victim back into the cover and then further away to stash the kill or eat part of it and then relocate it. They will even enter huts and grab a victim...a child, a man or a woman. You just never know what they might do.

They HAVE to think of a solution, this is madness or people WILL start hunting these animals and leopards are going to meet the same fate as the Thylacine.

You are aware of global warming and they are still producing humans, this should be banned. Especially when you can't effort your child a good home, food, school... I don’t know why they don’t chip The Tigers like they do with some of the lions in Africa and great whites sharks in Massachusetts and other areas where attacks have happened on humans. This gives off a warning signal when an animal is entering the area Or the water so people can leave the area or get out of the water till the animal leaves. This has stopped a lot of great white attacks in many parts of the United States if it could be done on great white sharks I don’t know why it can’t be done on tigers. Also they are chipping Tigers and that they have caught in traps I don’t understand why they don’t put the GPS collars on them why they have them trapped. The only way they know if they are catching the same tiger twice or three times or even four times is to keep trapping it with a GPS collar they can tell if a tiger that they trapped once is in the area instead of keep trapping them over and over again. The technology is out there why don’t they use it. It has been very successful in Africa when lions are coming near or into a village. Researchers get a signal that a lien they have trapped and collard is near a village and they know exactly which lying that is and to remove it.

You definitely have a valid point of view on it but a lot more is involved in the study of leopards. Humans don't have much knowledge of the leapord species as it is nocturnal by nature and is stealth hunter. Leaopards have stealth that none of the animal can posses not even humans can come up with and leaopards have more larger territory than any other cats as they are not pack oriented animals they spread out in a large area of forest. But the main problem arrives when it's form of hunting a hunter will always go for the easiest prey they can and that's where humans and cattle lack behind I guess. And about lions they leave socially with other lioness and there Cubs form a pack unrelated to leaopards.

Imo, I think it doesn't make sense to try and confine any predator to a specific prey. They're predators, and a cattle is just as nutricious as a deer etc... What they should be concerned about is man-eaters. Not another animal. Also raising cattle on a reservation is not too bright if you're filling it up with leopards. So much for common sense from scientists.

The main issue with them hunting cattle, aside from the fiscal cost of the cattle lost, is allowing this increases the boldness of the leopards around humans thus increasing the chances of humans becoming the prey.

@Shivam Joshi wow thx, I've always wondered? So do they live so far away, that there's no way possible, that they can ever come cross each other?, Meaning like, if a male tiger is setting out to find his own territory, and he decides to wonder a thousand miles away, over an huge period of time, because most of the territories that he crosse's, not only are spoken for,but the others that are not, just isn't good enough, like there's no prey around and females, so he just keeps on going and going, is there still like a 💯 percent , that, they still would never ever be able to cross paths, do to like oceans, or whatever, that makes it completely, without a doubt impossible??

@@charlesjeffery1155 For the most part, yes. It is pretty much impossible for Asiatic Lions and Bengal Tigers to meet in the wild. Long, long ago, Tiger and Lion territory did in fact overlap in India and they did meet each other, but now only about 674 Asiatic Lions live in a small portion in the Gir forest in india. Tigers can be found in many more parts of India and different areas in asian. But even Tigers don't even live in a quarter of the areas the once lived in and that is really sad.

@@koushikdas1992 I think you could if they have the chip in them that would give an alarm off when the animal is getting close to farmers or other residence. Just like with the lions and the white sharks that are chips, as an example the alarm will go off when a great white is 1000 yards from the beach. They can set the alarm at any distance once an animal is chipped. Also I think an electric fence would work quite nicely on keeping the Tigers away from fields and peoples houses. Electric fences can be put out quite quickly and are very reasonable. It cost us, my husband and I to put 4 strands of electric fence around 5 acres of land for our horses add a cost of about $250. That is New Jersey prices which are quite high because we are in the New York area. If an animal gets zapped by an electric fence they will not go near it again. Tigers, lions, great white sharks and a number of other animals see in color so if they paint the polls the electric fences on once zapped they will stay far away from it. They are having a lot of success with it on beaches from Massachusetts all the way down to North Carolina for the great white sharks. Also in parts of Africa where they have trouble with hyenas killing their livestock and attacking people they started using electric fence with colored poles and that seems to be very effective.
