Why would it be illegal to flip off a cop, when you're driving by, in the UNITED STATES? Seriously. This isn't a dictatorship. The guy won a hefty settlement, so the police were indeed wrong. It's bad enough that there ARE cops who believe they deserve subordination from everyone, at all costs. They're definitely trained incorrectly. According to the story, it seems Riggens thought he was flipped off, more than anything.

Keep in mind it was 2am and it was very foggy and not a damn car on the road so. 😂 Driving while brown. My other story about cops is much sadder, Central Park 5 style. Went 80k in debt getting a good lawyer when I was 14 to settle because they had coerced testimonies from kids whom they threatened. I was supposedly Tony Soprano and conspiring the crime since I was not there. Now I help people wrongly convicted in any way I can.

Next thing I know a police officer is shining a flashlight in my face yelling at me to get out of the car as I pull into my parents driveway. What happened was this house party someone reported it to the police they parked down the street were walking up the center of the street. He assumed I was from that house party I tried to explain all he could do is go on and on how I tried to run him over. I said why are you walking down the middle of the street in a black uniform with no light on. He wrote me a ticket for going 55 mph in a residential neighborhood. It wasn't even possible to go that fast I fought the ticket judge said the police officer word is greater then my word against him. I had 3 witnesses, video, and a diagram it wasn't even possible to drive that fast. Yeah in those days cops got away with murder.

I'm thankful that Riggen didn't beat up the victim or physically abuse the victim aside from the illegal detainment then arrest (basically kidnapping). The story is so much worse (legally) with additional details. The Franklin DA charged him with the BullS*** disorderly conduct charge which was thrown out immediately by the judge. Then he filed ANOTHER disorderly conduct charge for impeding traffic which was also thrown out immediately by the judge. That's why the settlement was so large and included attorney fees for the victim. It was $100,000 for him and $75,000 for the attorneys. I'm glad Riggen isn't a trooper anymore and I hope he doesn't pursue another position in law enforcement for the sake of his possible future victims and for his own sake as well. The DA should be fired and charged with malicious prosecution as I haven't heard any consequences for the legal hell he was trying to inflict on the victim.

Only in the USA. Over here, in Belgium, the slogan is "the police, your friend, your helper" (in Dutch "police" is seen as a group, hence singular). I was in a park with my young children once, in this Middle Ages thing with tents and people dressed up and such. I walk up to a duo of cops and say: "your uniforms don't fit in this setting". They just laughed. My kids were shocked and I'm pretty sure the cops heard me tell them: "See, there's nothing to be scared of, they're just human too. The police, your friend, your helper." Same thing after the attack in Brussels. There were military officers patrolling the mall. My youngest was 9 and when we left a store she was startled by the presence of a duo of military officers. I told my kid: "She's not going to bite, you know, she's here to protect us." After which the female officer pretended to claw and take a bite out of my child. That made my child laugh and the next time we came across that same duo, we all said hello to each other. I'm a brown woman with a white, blond and blue-eyed eldest child and two slightly tanned, brown-haired and brown-eyed kids. I honestly would not feel safe in the US these days least of all behaving like I did in the park or in the mall. Over here, if a cop pulls a gun (even without firing it) there is a whole investigation as to whether that was necessary. In the US, I'd be dead already.

This was a retaliation arrest. The cop knew it was a questionable arrest but he got his revenge by putting the man through the nightmare of booking, sitting in jail and the cost. This big payoff wasn't paid by the cop so his bad act cost him nothing. The taxpayers paid for it. It's likely that the cop didn't even get anything but a "don't do that again" from his superior officers.

The video said the cop "retired" a week before the trial. So I'm thinking yes, but of course they wouldn't admit it.

3:45 ah Cenk bless your heart! I lost all faith and trust in police at 5yo. Sitting on the sidewalk with 3 of my black friends, a cop rolled up and threw fast food trash at us and called us garbage. Four 5yo girls, just playing outside or houses. That was just my first interaction with police. It only got worse from there. Not so much for me, but for my friends. When we'd get pulled over, They'd sit me off to the side and my friends would get yelled at and roughed up (in the better situations). Fuck Minneapolis police. I said it 🤷🏽‍♀️

@jackkanoff6265 This is why we can't all get along. I tell, what should be a heartbreaking story- it broke my heart every time it happened, and you go out of your way to be dismissive. Have a heart. 💜

Cenk, I had some respect for police until I turned 15 when I saw the LA County Sheriff's started rioting on Aug 29, 1970. Was held at gunpoint by LAPD about 2 weeks later, for walking to school with an athletic bag.

I dont understand people's frustrations when they see someone flipping them off. Like its just a hand gesture. So what? I have been flipped off a few time while driving and it never bothered me. I mean I watched that vehicle intently to see if karma strikes back but I never wanted to be outraged by it.

Cops in their "I'm so special and great" mode CLEARLY hate ANY form of what they consider disrespect. I always thought respect was EARNED. Their recent behavior in SO many cases earns contempt, not respect. It's not the good cops' fault, but overall, they lose the automatic assumption of all being good, honest cops.

$75,000 just to defend himself - over a minor stop! And at the same time WE pay the ALL the costs to keep the case going for years when they knew it was BS.

Wow..what a coincidence, the cop "retires" just before the case is decided. Hmmmm funny how that worked out. Guess he got to keep his pension.

What if you give a cop the, "STINK EYE?" How about a monthly, "show a cop your disdain day?" That should desensitize them to gestures.

One time, walking past a meter cop, I laughed evil, aloud, "mwa-hahahaha." I figured, I don't have a car, he has no power over me. Unless I was hearing things, he did say, hey, when I was about 50 yards away. I kept walking.
