Sell people on a program where they benefit disproportionately to what they spend and of course the program is liable to be popular. Flip it and give people a program where their cost is disproportionate to their benefit and of course the program is liable to be unpopular. Free healthcare is an incredibly popular idea. A 12% flat tax to pay for said free healthcare (same way the UK pays for theirs) is incredibly unpopular. Selling people on free things is the equivalent of weekly pizza parties.

If a 401K plan were administered like Social Security (but money kept private and invested in stocks) the average return per year since 1980 would be 11.93%. That is far greater than the return on Social Security which is a convenient black box equation that you can't check (imagine your bank getting away with this lol). I would be a millionaire many times over if the money invested in my Social Security went into a 401K instead. What am I getting from Social Security? $2,700 a month! That is about $32,000 a year. let us say I live to 80 and starting collection social security at age 65. 15 years x 32,000, $480,000.00. What a joke. Invested in the stock market via a 401K I would have 6 million dollars.

I am a tax accountant and it's absurd to me that social security has a cap. All it tells me is that the working class contributes all of their money dollar for dollar at 6.2% while the richer get a cap with a less effective rate, but can extract their social security at the max rate (as they should be able to). These are the same people that claim it's an entitlement program, but feel entitled to take their entire share out. Raise the cap, everyone gets a withdrawal raise and less dependency on socializing the American Corporatist 401k system. There's a reason it's popular because it works and it benefits the majority of Americans. It is social insurance and Sam nailed it.

When I was a young man I bought into the idea that I could save and invest better than Social Security could provide. And I did, for several years I was saving half my take home pay. I was single and had no dependents so it was possible. But all my personal savings and investments don't come close to what SS and medicare and my govt pension provide. I feel very fortunate that I am a beneficiary of these programs and I started to appreciate it in my fifties, now in my seventies.I could see private pensions being replaced by 401K programs and I thought at that time, this is a disaster waiting to happen. I don't see any way a person with a family and a good job could ever have a decent retirement without these benefits. People at the lower income levels are just screwed, both now with high rent and inflation and in their later years with conservatives constantly targeting these programs.

I firmly believe that we need to implement a sick leave as well as maternity & paternity leave programs for all workers in this country. I personally feel that every time worker in this country regardless of their job should be guaranteed at least 2 weeks of sick leave & 2 weeks vacation per year. In addition to guaranteed sick leave, we also need to allow both mothers & fathers who just had a baby to be guaranteed time off with pay as well, so that way businesses can ensure that their employees at all levels can come into work feeling their best & contributing their best physically and mentally everyday. Finally, I firmly believe that "Working Poor" should not be a thing! If you work full time every week of the year, you shouldn't be living at or below the poverty line in this country! Hence why I feel there should be a Universal Basic Income for every American citizen above the age of 16 based on what the poverty level is so that way no one who works full time should have to financially struggle to get by.

Two weeks of vacation? Mate, look at Europe. Two weeks of vacation is pathetic. Even in the UK, a notoriously horible country for worker's rights, we get over 5 weeks of paid holiday. I oppose Social Security for the following: 1. They don't publish annual returns (shocking). 2. The return on your investment is way lower than any other investment. 3. If you die early, you lose it all (401K money goes to your family). 4. It's not your money, the government controls it and can cut it anytime. Imagine a bank account where the bank can suddenly decide to cut your balance. It's the greatest ripoff program ever.

How on earth do you even talk to people like that and honestly, I spotted a lot of shady and insidious rhetoric/dog whistles Sam seemed like he missed. But then they throw so much out at once how could you even address everything? The thing is, "rich" isn't just a state of being so far as ones bank account, its a state of mind: specifically one with diminished empathy, short-sightedness and frankly, the feeling that being mean is cool/smart. And this isn't something you can reaosn people out of. But it is what informs their every political 'opinion.' You can almost smell it.

The heroic people who have continued on, making minimum wage and working more than one job to make ends meet, have done so without expectations of anything from anyone but themselves- and Social Security, which they paid into Their Whole Lives! The insurance CEO’s snide comment about “capitalists over-tax” to keep Soc Sec funded, as if they Carry the workers, (when it’s the other way around) infuriates me. I don't like the use of the word, entitlement to label social programs..it's a bs way of miscasting the recipients as lazy etc...

I'm a business owner, I'm very taxed (I live in Europe). And am happy that this contribution builds the community, provides social security, quality education and health care. And I'm not rich! (I drive a Dacia 😊).

That's not what's happening with our taxes here in the states.

@@richc2596 yes they do. Not as much as they should but that will only change when the Republicans are destroyed and people vote progressive down the line

Wow driving the cheapest car you can get new in europe, what a great reward for the risk of running a business. No wonder europe's innovations quickly get exported overseas for a nickel and a dime.

@@KingKong-mp6gjEU requires companies to give a minimum wage that is higher then in the US or other non European countries. Companies want costs to be as low as possible. That's why they exported ( just like the US did) jobs overseas. To be able to screw over poor people in other countries and keep costs lower. That has nothing to do with taking risks. That's just companies being traitors to their fellow countrymen and screwing them out of jobs. And no one forces anyone to take " a risk" like that . That risk is a choice. Boo fucking hoo. People take that risk because they full well understand that working for someone else isn't rewarding often times. They feel like they want to hold on to what they make and not have to give it to a boss. And then they end up being that boss, acting as if they don't understand how this works. Acting like the only reason they took that risk is to help society and be job creators. And obviously that's bull. They took that risk because they wanted to profit the most, they eventually want to be able to have other people do their work for their company. An employee also takes a risk on a company. Losing your normal to low paying job is horrible. Finding another job isn't that easy, at least for a lot of people. Or having to work with dangerous chemicals, doing work that breaks the body or just having to do more work because of inept bosses. It's a joint risk, risky in a different way but also WAY LESS rewarding. Since underpaying employees is almost a must. No probs for taking a risk that's unnecessary most of the time, how about these risk takers get a normal job like the rest of us. Or shut up and just try a business..

I am a retired teamster we don’t have 401(k)s thank God. We have just a regular pension and that’s what I get. A pension and Social Security they could stick those 401(k)s.

He says popla popular isn't a way to qualify things then defends taxing less like that isn't something that is popular for most people. You can literally dismantle most his arguments with his own arguments
