Sell people on a program where they benefit disproportionately to what they spend and of course the program is liable to be popular. Flip it and give people a program where their cost is disproportionate to their benefit and of course the program is liable to be unpopular. Free healthcare is an incredibly popular idea. A 12% flat tax to pay for said free healthcare (same way the UK pays for theirs) is incredibly unpopular. Selling people on free things is the equivalent of weekly pizza parties.

@@BTrain-is8ch First of all, uncapping Medicare pretty much covers it at the current rate. Secondly, even at 12%, that amounts to ~$3750 for the average American vs ~$6720 in insurance premiums. And you can double that for when insurance actually starts to pay for anything.

7:06 this also goes back to Sam’s earlier statement, that -not only does Social Security prevents 2/3 of the elderly from falling into poverty, it also helps the younger generation of the those elderly people from having to impoverish themselves to keep their parents, grandparents, or other loved ones alive as they age and their medical needs increase.

If a 401K plan were administered like Social Security (but money kept private and invested in stocks) the average return per year since 1980 would be 11.93%. That is far greater than the return on Social Security which is a convenient black box equation that you can't check (imagine your bank getting away with this lol). I would be a millionaire many times over if the money invested in my Social Security went into a 401K instead. What am I getting from Social Security? $2,700 a month! That is about $32,000 a year. let us say I live to 80 and starting collection social security at age 65. 15 years x 32,000, $480,000.00. What a joke. Invested in the stock market via a 401K I would have 6 million dollars.

PBD has a tendency to defensively flip to "personal responsibility" when losing an argument on the merits. This is a great example, saying "but society is better off we all don't need it." AKA 'just make better decisions and you won't need Social Security'. He did this all throughout the podcast.

This disgusts me, when I suffered a spine injury and found out in my state my employer didn't need to carry workers comp in a small company it had nothing to do with planning! I had just moved to the state and it was a new job, In fact it was my "retirement job" something they will never understand needing, so I was in a good position in life. I had planned for the best outcome, and medical tragedy struck as it could to anyone anyday.

I am a tax accountant and it's absurd to me that social security has a cap. All it tells me is that the working class contributes all of their money dollar for dollar at 6.2% while the richer get a cap with a less effective rate, but can extract their social security at the max rate (as they should be able to). These are the same people that claim it's an entitlement program, but feel entitled to take their entire share out. Raise the cap, everyone gets a withdrawal raise and less dependency on socializing the American Corporatist 401k system. There's a reason it's popular because it works and it benefits the majority of Americans. It is social insurance and Sam nailed it.

What fascinates me about people like PBD is that they always seem to look at things in society in a vacuum and never ask why things operate the way they do, so when you end up questioning how society would work under their preferred system, they either don't have a clear answer, or they end up just reconstructing the society we live in now.

When I was a young man I bought into the idea that I could save and invest better than Social Security could provide. And I did, for several years I was saving half my take home pay. I was single and had no dependents so it was possible. But all my personal savings and investments don't come close to what SS and medicare and my govt pension provide. I feel very fortunate that I am a beneficiary of these programs and I started to appreciate it in my fifties, now in my seventies.I could see private pensions being replaced by 401K programs and I thought at that time, this is a disaster waiting to happen. I don't see any way a person with a family and a good job could ever have a decent retirement without these benefits. People at the lower income levels are just screwed, both now with high rent and inflation and in their later years with conservatives constantly targeting these programs.

I firmly believe that we need to implement a sick leave as well as maternity & paternity leave programs for all workers in this country. I personally feel that every time worker in this country regardless of their job should be guaranteed at least 2 weeks of sick leave & 2 weeks vacation per year. In addition to guaranteed sick leave, we also need to allow both mothers & fathers who just had a baby to be guaranteed time off with pay as well, so that way businesses can ensure that their employees at all levels can come into work feeling their best & contributing their best physically and mentally everyday. Finally, I firmly believe that "Working Poor" should not be a thing! If you work full time every week of the year, you shouldn't be living at or below the poverty line in this country! Hence why I feel there should be a Universal Basic Income for every American citizen above the age of 16 based on what the poverty level is so that way no one who works full time should have to financially struggle to get by.

If you die early, you lose it all (401K money goes to your family). 4. It's not your money, the government controls it and can cut it anytime. How on earth do you even talk to people like that and honestly, I spotted a lot of shady and insidious rhetoric/dog whistles Sam seemed like he missed. But then they throw so much out at once how could you even address everything? The thing is, "rich" isn't just a state of being so far as ones bank account, its a state of mind: specifically one with diminished empathy, short-sightedness and frankly, the feeling that being mean is cool/smart. And this isn't something you can reaosn people out of. But it is what informs their every political 'opinion.' You can almost smell it.

The insurance CEO’s snide comment about “capitalists over-tax” to keep Soc Sec funded, as if they Carry the workers, (when it’s the other way around) infuriates me. For literally every topic discussed, their ultimate measuring stick of what's considered successful is does it make money, let rich people keep their money, etc. Money money money. That's it. That's all they care about. The way they all laughed and reacted to him when he said in a different segment that he doesn't believe billionaires should exist was very telling. They couldn't believe it.

Patrick asks the weirdest gotcha questions framed as something else. “If you had to have bacon in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or ontop of ice cream but you weren’t the one paying for it, which would you chose? It’s a very simple question, answer the question…” and if you stray, you better believe he will come back to it.

@Dodge, I have been a fan of PBD for a few years and enjoy his clips. I suspect many fans of Sam commenting on this clip don’t realize that Patrick makes an attempt to have a balanced conversation. Yes, it is a right leaning show, but one of the main hosts, Adam, is a leftist. Patrick also brings on many guests with differing opinions, including leftist and far leftists. Sam is far from the first leftist brought on the show and will most certainly not be the last.

I watched the whole show; I thought it was great. Not gonna lie though I was hoping to see more debate and see Pat try to push back more; I always love seeing Sam meticulously tear down those positions. Nonetheless I really like how they gave Sam the platform to really make his case on a lot of issues.

Less than .5% of the active employees that work for PBD's company make a living wage. The next .5% is something like 30k for the year. The other 99% make between $200 and $4000 or something like that. FOR THE YEAR. And this doesn't take into account all the people who dropped out when they realize it's just a big MLM scheme. It's gross.

Never fails to make them re-think their position.

5:40 Sam literally tells them that Medicare works out cheaper and has a lower admin cost, and the immediately replies it’s like promising a free pizza party and asks who is going to pay for it. Seeing it as increased spending by the state and instead of decreased spending by society as a whole is stupid. The US pays more per capita and more as a % of GDP on healthcare than any other developed country. M4A would increase state spending on healthcare, but decrease overall spending - by the state and by people and corporations, combined - on healthcare.

@@KingKong-mp6gjEU requires companies to give a minimum wage that is higher then in the US or other non European countries. Companies want costs to be as low as possible. That's why they exported ( just like the US did) jobs overseas. To be able to screw over poor people in other countries and keep costs lower. That has nothing to do with taking risks. That's just companies being traitors to their fellow countrymen and screwing them out of jobs. And no one forces anyone to take " a risk" like that . That risk is a choice. Boo fucking hoo. People take that risk because they full well understand that working for someone else isn't rewarding often times. They feel like they want to hold on to what they make and not have to give it to a boss. And then they end up being that boss, acting as if they don't understand how this works. Acting like the only reason they took that risk is to help society and be job creators. And obviously that's bull. They took that risk because they wanted to profit the most, they eventually want to be able to have other people do their work for their company. An employee also takes a risk on a company. Losing your normal to low paying job is horrible. Finding another job isn't that easy, at least for a lot of people. Or having to work with dangerous chemicals, doing work that breaks the body or just having to do more work because of inept bosses. It's a joint risk, risky in a different way but also WAY LESS rewarding. Since underpaying employees is almost a must. No probs for taking a risk that's unnecessary most of the time, how about these risk takers get a normal job like the rest of us. Or shut up and just try a business..
