Stam Fine Reviews looks at a short lived series from the late 70’s. Man from Atlantis starred future Dallas star Patrick Duffy as Mark Harris, a man with unique aquatic abilities but no memory of where he has come from.
Man from Atlantis began well with four made-for-television movies in 1977 and was followed by a 13 episode series that seemed to have been less well thought out. Man from Atlantis meandered through stories involving an imp, a rogue, a giant jellyfish, a murderous santa claus impersonator. Some are good, others less so.

Was a huge fan of this series, when DALLAS began filming it's first season here Patrick Duffy was doing a local telethon, I called in and spoke to him. Told him how huge a fan I was of ATLANTIS, he immediately invited me to visit him on the filming location of DALLAS, there I met the cast and Patrick graciously signed all my ATLANTIS memorabilia I had at the time...35 years later met up with him again for a premiere of the DALLAS reboot, he was just as nice and funny as he was all those years ago. Thanks for the retrospect of the series, even though you were a bit harsh, all these 70s series were a bit cheesy, but there lies their charm.

I never saw Man From Atlantis as a kid, but am looking into the episodes now. Fun fact: Dallas had a spin-off called "Knots Landing", and they occasionally had characters visit each other's shows. Bobby's death greatly affected several Knots characters and storylines, and Dallas was never mentioned again after the "dream" on Knots.

I really liked this show as a kid. As it was the closest thing to a live action Aquaman we had. I remember it was taken off air here in Melbourne because of low ratings. It was probably the first show yanked off air that I kept wishing would come back, as I knew they hadn't shown all the episodes. It eventually did, one summer, but was a long time coming, something like 18 months later. May have been the 80s by then.

I just LOVE your show, Mr Fine. I have relived my childhood through you. This Man From Atlantis show was so embedded in British culture that you could use the title as a short hand for, “being wet,” or, “rainy weather,” and everyone got your reference. I had no notion it was so short lived! And I bet lots of Brits were like me, being aware of it, without really watching it? I cannot remember any specific episodes, stories or content, though I sort of vaguely remember seeing it. Not like I remember whole specific plot lines from The Six Million Dollar Man, or Star Trek. Have you ever considered doing an episode on the Japanese phenomenon that was Monkey? A live action comedy action series, based on Chinese legends, with so many paradoxes and interesting things going on with it that it’s just popping with possibilities for the Stam Fine treatment, surely? Everyone at my school used to quote Monkey regularly and do the, “blowing on your rapidly jerking hand,” gesture to evoke their special powers before a fight. And god help anyone who was around if me or any of my mates came across a stick lying around! Such an object was guaranteed to start the first one of us to get to it to start swinging and squeaking like the characters, with much pain resulting! I think The Water Margin paved the way for Japanese TV pop culture martial artistry, but Monkey was a teen cult like no other. I would LOVE to see what you could do with that?! Please?

As a kid, I loved this show. Great pilot, good series (haven't seen it since its original airing, so who knows how it'll age for me). And even a comic I liked. But, the key to my enjoying it was as a major Aquaman and Namor the Submariner fan (with Triton, Stingray and even Mora and Manta very enjoyable), this was a superhero movie to me. I kept hoping they'd finally see it was possible for an Aquaman TV show or at least TV movie. That was naturally skyrocketed once Superman came out and showed superheroes in costumes could be more than just a kids show (the way Captain Marvel was). Looking back at it through this review I now question that, lol. But, I'd like to at least think nostalgia would make it still enjoyable.

Thank you for this video! I have had fond (but distant) memories about this series since seeing the original broadcasts in the UK, although more for Fred Karlin's excellent music than Partick Duffy's acting skills. I recently cracked and bought the movies on DVD .. only to be terribly disappointed by everything except the original pilot (where Victor Buono absolutely steals the show!). I look forward to watching your future videos. :-)

Excellent Nostalgia Trip and Delightfully Unexpectedly DAZZLING Narration work. FLUID and Candid, Just Straight Out, Bang-On Honest! With Great Research, Use of Other Tropes (In Search Of' Title Sequences for Certain Points was Brilliant!), and The Remark about Costco's Bulk Quantity Razors Was both Utterly Hilarious and Soooo True (To both the Quality of the Razors and The Ultimate Quality of the Show's Writing, Acting, and Premises!) My Favorite Episodes were The One with The Falcon Statue That came to Life (as if it had been revived after being Zapped with a Biomolecular Decelerator "Fossilizer" but nobody believed Mark Harris about it. Dreadful Way to End the episode, but, I can Fully relate to that circumstance!🙀😿😭🛸), and The one with Sonny Bono and The Two Headed Seahorse Creature. As hokey as It Was, the character Was acted Well and elicited audience sympathy effectively. And, the seriously weird one with Kareem Abdul Jabbar as a giant prospector in an alternate universe unintentionally threatening Earth's Oceans. A Lot of crazy stuff stood out in bit's and pieces, but, I have fond memories of the Show! Thank You for handling this show with Respect.💖

Point of trivia: The collar insignia seen on the black crew member, at 8:21, is the US Navy Supply Corps emblem. I knew it well, as a supply officer, from 1988-1992. From a distance, it resembles a pork chop and supply officers were known as "chops," because of it.

I loved this show when it was on TV, though I didn't remember all the sillier stuff like the time travel and whatnot. Apparently Patrick Duffy wrote a Man From Atlantis novel that came out a few years ago that answered the questions of Mark Harris' mysterious past. I haven't read it, so I can't say how it was. After watching this though, I might give it a read as the mystery had always fascinated me.

It came out in 2016. Surprised that Duffy could write that well, but it was pretty good. Several folks had problems with the plot lines, but given 'reality' he choose the best choice. It was supposed to be a potential 2-3 book write, but he only did one and then left us hanging. LOL.
