Let's not gloss over the fact that each of the 5 men who actually went through the Squeeze to get to Floyd (Homer, Miller, Gerald, Burdon and Casey Jones) could've all easily gotten stuck themselves at any time (Casey Jones was a particularly close call). And potentially 3 of them had no prior experience doing anything like this (Homer, Miller and Burdon). All 5 of them were absolute legends for going so far to try and save Floyd.
@Bendakid

This story is a modern tragedy. Homer, Miller, Gerald, etc. went so far to save Floyd from Sand Cave, but that damn cave wouldn't give them a tenth of an inch. It's heartbreaking that Floyd wasn't allowed to properly rest until FAR after his death.

@@thelordofthelostbraincells It kinda hard at that time because when you dig further, the longer the exhaust line is, and any accident that leaks the gas will kill him. Furthermore, the cave has a natural sucking air, which can invisibly gather the gas into the cave, a small amount that no human can detect can become deadly not because of the gas itself, but because the gas block away the thin air he had, and that's the true problem

To be fair though, without the publicity from the public 4 of those 5 men would have never arrived to help in the first place so it's a double-edged sword. And to be fair to Homer hindsight is 20/20 and it's not like Homer ever had any experience rescuing someone trapped in a cave that deep before and it's unknown how the locals would have reacted to him ordering them to leave (it's not like he was a cop or anything). There's a ton of wasted time and manpower during the first couple of days of the rescue that could have made a difference; it isn't until the military and mining guy showed up that manpower and resources were being organized efficiently but by then it was just too late. This is why it's so important today that we have an actual trained emergency response team in every town. Having someone take charge and lead people early on can and will save lives.

Look up the "Gladbeck Hostage Crisis", and you'll see an even more modern example of media and public not only obstrucing in an ongoing emergency situation, but even actively helping and aiding the criminals in this case. To make a tl;dr: two criminals robbed a bank, then took a bus hostage (later were given a car for a getaway in exchange of most of the hostages, keeping two or three though), and public and journalists, the first to gawk or being morons and sympathizing with them, and second so to get interviews, photos, and keeping the emergency going, helped them by offering them food, drinks, directions, tips about the authorities plans, lying to authorities, preventing police from intervening or getting close, and more (plus the police being ridiculously incompetent and fucking up at every turn imaginable). It was a complete shitshow, and it's almost a miracle "only" 3 people died (two were hostages, one was a policeman who died during a chase).

The story the SCP Foundation told everyone: The body was removed from the cave and buried before being callously dug back up and put on display. The leg was lost when vandals removed his body and tossed it into a bush. His body is currently buried at a church. The reality: When Floyd was first buried, they couldn't free his leg. It was only partially covered, but they assumed there was something bigger pinning the leg down, gave up and sawed it off. Sometime after the initial burial, the grave was found empty, and the body was found back in the cave. Amnestics were administered to any witnesses, and the story about the callous land-owner was constructed. Anyone who thought they saw the leg attached to his body while he was on display actually saw a prosthetic. The prosthetic is what was lost when the vandals took the body. Someone tried to retrieve the leg. But the leg. Just. Won't. Move. It is still in the EXACT spot where it was when Floyd was buried alive, even though it's been completely uncovered at least once. Further more, the morning after his body was buried at the church yard, it was found sticking half-way out of the freshly-filled grave. They reburied it multiple times, each to the same result. One day, the area was evacuated for the day after a reburial due to an anticipated natural disaster. When people returned, the body was found back in the damn cave. It was theorized that returning the leg to the body would stop the body from moving, so D-Class were sent into the cave to make doubly sure that the leg was completely immobile by digging all the way around it. There was a cave in, and one D-Class was buried alive, dying nearly instantly. The body of Floyd stopped moving on it's own. The D-Class is to remain buried.

I have a lot of respect for these guys. Homer was on his own the first few days and tried all he could while getting constantly barraged with stupid suggestions by the people outside. Miller only came for news coverage, but ended up risking his own life multiple times for a man he didn't know and even declining a sh*tload of money in the end. Burdon may had the wrong idea, but his heart was in the right place. After the rope pull failed and the 2nd try was rejected, he could've just left. But he stayed and went back in to help the others. And Gerald with his insane stamina moving half a ton of rock in 3 hours. Also, just crawling through the squeeze alone was dangerous enough, especially after the snow melt started softening the walls, but they still did it.

When it comes to caves and underground things it’s never that simple. You can’t just dig randomly even if it’s connecting a cave to another cave. As shown in the video there are boulders which will slow progress. It also took an entire professional excavation team around a 100+ hours to not even get to him with heavy equipment that the first four actual rescuers didn’t have. Stability has to be considered not just of the dug hole/passage but the entire cave. Another thing is wether the dig will cause more danger, like will removing the rock weaken stability too much. Most importantly you never know what may be above you and wether or not the rock removed was the only thing supporting it. And you never know what’s below you and a step you took now leads to you falling into another cave.

At least this guy has the bragging rights he had the most interesting life after death. Imagine passing away in a cave, being taken out of the cave, being returned to that cave as a tourist attraction, having your body stolen and tried to be thrown into a river just to land in a bush, then being chain up in that cave before 60+ years later being properly laid to rest.

there's definitely a documentary about as i recognized some of the pictures of Floyd from a history channel documentary i watched like 30+ years ago. I kept getting this feeling of deja vu about the situation but the full picture of Floyd in one of the newpapers was what jogged my memory of it.

I find it interesting that a lot of reactors react the same way when they were about to attempt the 2nd rope pull (and were stopped by the locals gatekeeping). Perhaps that could have saved him, but as they say hindsight is 20/20 They could probably try to install a pulley down there to transfer the energy, pulling him parallel to the floor instead of upwards (ok, just reached the part at the end where you guys had the same thought)

If ya'll do a recap react to some of IH's content, I highly suggest reacting to SailorVince's reaction to the Costa incident, he offers some insight to how the industry works such as for example Nate when you thought the captain was just promoted out of the blue from head of security, SailorVince actually notes that's illegal to do so for the captain to have even been given that job they would have been required to take a few classes and exams just to get the documents needed to land you that position but that doesn't mean your guaranteed to have it.
