RIP Mike Starr who died on this date in 2011.
I know I’ve been beating you guys up pretty good this week with all the uploads, but I found this website where you can search when celebrities (musicians) were born or died. I always struggle when deciding what video to upload, so I welcome an anniversary of any sort to help take the decision out of my hands. Unfortunately for you, it’s been a very busy week.
Many years ago, Lynn and I were driving around with her older brother, Danny. He's very hip to music of all sorts although he hates Rush, but that's another story. He lives in Manhattan and works for the post office there. Super nice guy, but a typical NYC nut job. And I don’t mean “nut job” in a bad way. New York City people just have a unique view of things and a certain way about them. Anyway, this song came on the radio and he leaned forward from the back seat and said, “If I was captured by aliens and they asked me to explain to them what hard-rock was, I would play them this song.” I have to say that I agree with him and Lynn and I still laugh every time we hear it.
“Man in the Box” by Alice in Chains off of their album, “Facelift” which came out in 1990 and featured the late Mike Starr on bass.

The death of Mike Starr hurt man. He was a phenomenal player, had this really cool way around the bass that was groovy, rhythmic and melodic. Always liked the little walking line he does on this song too, that had an impact on me when I was a bit younger looking for fresh ideas to put into metal/rock songs. You did this line justice and then more. You got that power he had too, nailed it technically in every aspect! Much respect dude.

Wait; Mike Starr is dead? I looked him up and at least he died of an overdose, a young man's death. But Luke Perry? I thought he was younger than me, but he was just a few months older. He died an old man's death. Am I near death? Really? Is this how it ends? Will I end? I still feel young. Sorry to go on here, but I lost both my parents in the last two years and was with both of them while they died. Sure gives you perspective. There's nothing like seeing it happen. And it's not so good. BTW, Great cover. And the detune? Was it just half-step flat tuning? And what about even lower tunings like Tony Iommi's C# standard? Did Geezer tune down or just adapt? I have lowered to C# and found strings get sloppy. A higher gauge could fix this, but I buy mid gauge.
@TJH3113
@TJH3113 5 жыл бұрын
Very sorry for your losses. We had a cat pass away at home a few years ago and it was horrible. I can't imagine watching a loved one slip away like that. It still haunts me. Yes, just a half-step down. Actually, I didn't know that Iommi tuned down that far, so I really don't know what Geezer does. This bass I am using is now tuned down to drop D (for the Ghost stuff) and I had it set up to do that, using slightly heavier strings and such.

Moved from sunny Hawaii to rainy Seattle in December 1990 - sounds nuts but I couldn't stand Hawaii's non-existent rock scene and literally driving in circles (around the island) on many weekends. First thing I do in Seattle is visit the local record store - asking what the local scene was like (I wasn't aware of the SUB POP scene). Dude hands me FACELIFT and says - this is all you need (he actually gave pointed me to a Green River EP as a bonus) he says check them (AIC) out at The Moore Theater. I honestly was going to Seattle thinking there were more Queensryche bands - but a whole new music movement was just getting started. To me, this song marks my starting point to the PNW sound that came to be known as Grunge.

Yeah, there was something toxic happening within that group. Very sad. Thanks. As prominent as the bass is on this track, it was still a bit difficult to tell, as you said, "what is actually going on under all that sludge", so I did something that I rarely do when learning songs and that was, checked out the isolated track. It definitely turned up a few things that I would not have done if I'd learned the song entirely off of the recording.

I'm usually working for 6 months prior to the party making props and stuff and it just got to be too much for one night. The Halloween projects and playing fill the same void and I've just really been enjoying playing the last few years. Before our last party, it was about 50/50... 6 months on Halloween and 6 months playing. I edging toward just making something for my own enjoyment, but not this year.
