Familiar tune to Radio Northsea (Nordsee) International radio listeners. DJ Alan West played this continuously behind mayday calls whilst the Mebo 2 was being attacked and set ablaze on 15 May 1971.
(I know the label changes colour - rubbish scanner!)

It's 1970 and I routinely tune my receiver across the MW band to see what's about. Suddenly this tune comes up. I wait, listening intently and the I hear it: 'This is Radio Nordzee International'. Suddenly radio is exciting again. Fond memories, to be treasured when subjected to the bland uniformity of today's commercial stations.

@@macraghnaill3553 anyone interested in pop music in the sixties had to listen to pirate radio as it was the only source of music available in Britain at that time. As you mention would start at one end of the medium wave dial and see what was available, normally late evenings as the signal was stronger. Through stations like Caroline, London, city, England, North Sea int, Holland, Veronica plus the unnamed stations was my inauguration to pop, soul and motown. What memories.

Great nostalgia, I remember listening to this on my tiny transistor radio at night, way back in 1969 at prep school in Southwold, we were not allowed to listen to it as school rule, there was something special listing to this particular Les Reed theme crackling over the radio on a stormy night, while tucked up in bed, with radio under the pillow.....Thanks for uploading.

Hi David. I used to have a radio under the pillow with an earphone piece and listen to medium wave. I used to start at the left hand side of the dial and work my way across the frequency. Aswell as British stations managed to hear American,French,Russian stations even AFN(American Forces Network). Found it fascinating as to what was actually on the frequency. I even listened to David Hamilton on Late Night Extra on Radio 2 and remember him playing My Sweet Lord by George Harrison so it was 50 years ago.Luxembourg always used to fade in and out on a song you really liked next to adverts for Cedar Wood aftershave and Peter Stuyvesant cigarettes. Seems a lifetime ago and yes used to pick up RNI on 220 metres medium wave. Happy days indeed.

@@andyhaslam9231 I remember Bob Stewart used to push the coffin nails - "Smoking a puh-puh-puh Peter Stuyvesant cigarette." My mum said he must've been blowing rather than sucking to do it like that! I used to do as you did, and as well as Luxy and Radio Northsea (my all-time favourite) and AFN (baffling if it was an American Football commentary but brilliant if it was a Wolfman Jack show) there'd be Radio Atlantis (usually too weak a signal to listen for very long), The Voice of America (which I found dull and somewhat religious as I recall) and Radio Moscow. It was always nice to get an update of tractor production levels!

Les Reed passed away on Mon 15th April 2019. He has left us this great track among many others, RIP Update:- Many members of the orchestra on this track have passed on as well. Some years ago I bought a copy of 'Cool Dudes' by the Les Reed Combo, the notes of which list many well known session musicians who played with Les Reed. He surrounded himself with the best that there were. According to Les Reed himself, 'Man of Action' was recorded in November 1968 at Lansdowne Studios, which was in the Ladbroke Grove area of west central London, with the late Adrian Kerridge at the controls. Nothing but a classic !

Les Reed was a very talented composer and musician, who created many great compositions for many British singers at the time. Underrated in my opinion. I once saw an interview with him and it struck me, despite his great talent, how modest that man was, absolutely no nonsense. My two cents from Belgium (Flanders).

The only Offshore Radio theme tune that really hits the spot, I can still remember when I first found RNI or Radio North Sea International on the 31 metre band on a valve radio in my sitting room back in 1971 or 1972. I think it must have been testing as "Man of Action" was being played continues lee for ten minutes then the music started, I stayed tuned to RNI just to hear that classical piece of music "Man of Action" which I later found out was their theme tune which was then played on the hour every hour.

The first song I heard on it, from the tiny Dixon's Dixie transistor radio hidden under my pillow, was Whiskey In The Jar by Thin Lizzy, and it was the first time I'd heard it, too. That guitar part at the start is great anyway, but listening to it 'undercover' from a pirate radio station was spine-tinglingly exciting!
