Colonel Hardy is the real badass in this scene. He empties all his rounds into an invulnerable enemy and pulls out a knife. Not in defiance, but he actually intended to use it because he lunged forward.

that's a warrior's mentality, with your maximum intention and your most efficient effort, eliminate the enemy with the most efficient method available to you. since the gun just ran out of bullets, the knife is the next best thing, given the imminence of a counterattack from faora (he has limited time frame, he could have looted a dead soldier's rifle, but that takes time, and his attacker is literally in his face). if the knife were taken from his hands, i think he'd still try to kill that demi-god with his bare hands, elbows, knees and feet, his last resort weapons (why do you think the synonym for weapon is arm?). retreat is never even considered a choice, a warrior is monomanically-focused with killing the opponent. dying is merely an undesirable outcome from the failure to kill the opponent, but his only thought is to kill his opponent.

you can rename the warrior's mentality with militarized thinking, as opposed to civilian thinking. kal-el is not militarized enough, at least in this movie, he relies too much on his capabilities. while i'm on the topic of superheroes, i'm gonna daydream a bit. if i were a copier of superpowers (like peter petrelli's empathic mimicry), i'd combine the powers of a kryptonian with the tactical efficiency of oliver queen AND steven rogers (plus rogers' optimum physical conditioning). maybe copy charles xavier and jean grey and jamie madrox while i'm at it. and the iq of shuri. and the technopathy of micah sanders and the rapid healing of claire bennet. all i have left to do is find the what i call the mother teresa capability, the ability to share my powers, so that i can make kal-el parkour and fight like steve rogers, and steve can muscle his way into anything, plus both can have the rapid healing of claire bennet and the infinite replication of jamie madrox, and we know these two boyscouts can be trusted with very big things. and find other worthy beings (using very powerful telepathy) and grant them better leverage in the superhero business.

Yes, but that makes some scenes not make sense. Why didn't Superman move out of the way of the train falling (relatively to his abilities) slowly from the sky? Why didn't the female kryptonian move out of the way of the missile coming slowly (relatively to her abilities) towards her? Similar things happened all the time. One they they would move incredibly fast, while other times they would stand like a deer in the headlights when something approached them at "normal" earth speed.

Colonel Hardy is the best of what humanity has to offer. Survives a helicopter crash and immediately gets on the horn to orders an attack on his own position knowing full well he is going to die. Never stops fighting what is essentially a god, despite having useless weapons at his disposal. When he runs out of ammo he brings out a knife, against a super-being, and charges at her. No delusions, his stern look lets you know he is aware of the futility of his efforts, but he never quits. As soon as the threat is distracted he returns to tending to his men. Full on display of greatness.

For those that might be curious, when he says "danger close," it means that he telling them that their friendly fire support will be engaging in an area that overlaps with their allies position, potentially putting their own men at risk, but must go through providing fire support regardless as ordered by the commander. A very selfless and brave order to give, that's why he's saying "rain down everything on them," despite him being right next to (or "directly north of") her, and that's why the pilot says "good luck, sir."

The Colonel and his team gave it all they had, and Colonel Hardy lost his men and expended all his remaining ammo. They couldnt have known prior that they faced what is essentially a god. But they learned fast. He knew he was going to die here but he pulls a knife to keep going to the last of his efforts, keeping his enemy in place while he calls all remaining ordnance to be expended on his position, which he knows he probably wont live through. And for all that, there is not an ounce of fear or defeat in his eyes. Faora sees this which is why she pays him a great respect with the line "A good death is its own reward." That was not said lightly. And then, he actually moves in to attack. He had Kryptonian balls at the very least.
