The Man vs Bear problem is so interesting to me from a sociology standpoint, and it makes me sad that it’s turned into a debate, when it could be so much more useful as a measure for how the average woman imagines the average man. Like, it’s not about whether the answer is “right.” It’s about what the answer says about the person answering. The fact that the average of women skews so heavily towards the bear (or at least, the internet makes it appear so. It blew up too fast for us to get any actual survey data.) could tell us something about the average consensus of men. And then follow up questions arrive: Do they choose the bear because they be believe the man to be more prone to violence? Do they believe the bear is more likely to be aggressive, but they’re afraid the man could do something worse? Etc. So, we change the parameters and run the question again to try to find out just what this data says. Would the average skew towards the man if the man was, say, visibly and physically weaker than the woman? What if the man was someone within their social circle? What if the bear was one of the more docile, such as the black bear? How much would the man have to be adjusted in order for her to view him as a big enough asset for survival to not choose the bear? I am probably the only person who cares about this but man I wish the internet wasn’t so dumb. This is such a cool test and we’re learning nothing from it, cause we’re too busy arguing.

I never said it cannot be true, it is although an outlet for trauma and I recommend you don’t treat it as anything else as I see no purpose in it and there are other topics that are related to this question which you would benefit from heavily instead of this. 2. I didn’t say that you can’t, I only recommended you shouldn’t; there is nothing technically wrong with it although it shouldn’t be treated as an experiment as that could make the said person feel a certain way; there isn’t much discovery in this and it’s not exactly necessary, it is a person venting their trauma. It is not how the average woman views the average man, that’s completely unrelated to this as we are not talking about an average woman; it is someone explaining why they don’t trust/fear men or maybe I misunderstand what you mean?

In defense of bears, those instances of bear attacks are the least likely outcome of a bear encounter. For every mauling, there are far more instances of a bear coming in contact with a human and choosing to avoid them (reasonably, because we are unpredictable and sometimes violent). If you get attacked by a bear, it’s either crazy desperate or you didn’t respect the bear’s space.

The biggest problem with that question is that it is far too general. What kind of man are we talking about, what kind of bear too? In what state are they when you meet them? Hungry, Well-fed, Peaceful, Sleeping, Alive, Non-alive, sick? There isn't anything to base our judgement on. The fact that you are in the woods brings absolutely nothing to the table. Thus the question may very well be just "Do you prefer men or bears?" and only triggers prejudices. Whereas if the question had a factor it would have brought really interesting answers and analysis. For example if the question was "You are in the woods and you are attacked by something. Would you rather it to be a man or a bear?", it would be really interesting because you know that you are being attacked and you now have to compare between being attacked by a man and being attacked by a bear, and thus the answers would be more telling. As for my answer to the original question? Heh, I don't even leave home to begin with. So I'll never come close to a forest.

Well to be fair, no one specifies WHICH bear or WHICH man so it’s hard to weigh my options. I will argue that I’ll choose the man though, even as a woman. Bears aren’t always aggressive but the ratio of territorial and lethal bears is higher than the ratio of territorial and aggressive men. Yes, men kill more people, but men also come into contact with others far more often. If we came into contact with wild bears as often as we do men, I assume bears would definitely have the higher kill count. This isn’t to say that I trust most men, I don’t trust most people, but I feel as though villainizing the entire opposite sex as a way to “prove a point” is and always has been counterproductive.

It would also depend on if you or the man is armed, and what your skills are. I'd say if you have the time to prepare and make spears, you could have the upper hand against a random man, but if the man has a gun obviously that's gonna be a losing battle no matter what, unless you can get the jump on him and he isn't open carrying and has his safety on, because in the time to draw a gun and turn off the safety you might be able to disembowel a man with a spear, at which point you could threaten with that and coerce the man to give you the gun, from there you could safely leave the woods. Most of the interactions with the man would not require any real skills in spearplay, since it would mostly be coersion and getting an upper hand in power, but for the bear you would need to have adequate spear and hunting technique, especially if you are alone against the bear since humans are meant to be hunting in groups. Of course if the man also has time to prepare this could flip on its head a little, but as you get more technologically advanced in weaponry the gap between male and female strength shortens, so as long as you are confident in your weaponmaking and martial arts skills you can be confident in your safety in a matchup against the man. All of that is assuming conflict, though. With a bear (most likely a grizzly, black, sun, or panda bear since the question explicitly states woods, where polar bears do not live) you are much less likely to engage in conflict, as a hiker traveling through remote places usually has anti bear measures like bells, bear spray, and flares, which would be less likely to deter a man (except the bear spray but even that is debatable). In addition, humans naturally like to be together, so there's a good chance the man follows you around thus increasing the chances of you entering into conflict. If you must enter into conflict then, the man would be the obvious choice, but if you have preventative measures for the bear I'd say the bear would be the safer option. All of that assumes a random man though, which as we've seen with hikers, is often not the case at all. Hikers and backpackers are usually very focused on testing their knowledge and fortitude, they have a self confidence and humbleness that many other men in society lack. If I were to encounter a random man, very scary, but if I were to encounter a random hiker or backpacker? Totally different story. Of course there are a few duds, but if we can reasonably cut down the pool of men to just those, I think I would choose the man after all.

I find It funny that most people interrogated have few to none experience interacting with wild predators, and see nature as inherently good, or even "lmao I'd rather get mauled by a bear". Why? What's to worry about a random woman? Men don't typically worry about random women in the street they don't know unlike women worrying about strange men. There's less things to worry about from a woman unless she's armed (which would be the same for a man anyway). Like if an unarmed woman follows a man there's less things to fear happening due to the usual strength difference. A woman can't do that, and the worst case scenarios for a malicious man catching her is far worse than just being killed. A man doesn't need to worry about being left pregnant from their rapist for example, women do (especially in states where you can't even abort the pregnancy regardless of it resulting from rape). Or hell, they could even just lie to you about promising to help you before overpowering you and kidnapping you.

This question is pretty much a case of "I had more bad encounters with thing A than B, therefore, I choose thing B (Despite thing B being more dangerous)". Women live with men in society rather than with bears (duh) thus they tend to have more bad experiences with them thus choose the bear. It's still a emotional answer and somewhat shows that people live sheltered lives, it's like if you asked a man if he would rather meet an german shepeard or an wolf in alley and he answers that he would pick the wolf because more people are killed by dogs than by wolfs every year therefore he is safer with the wolf.

Ummm, while what you said is technically kind of correct, it's a bit tone deaf. I think the response the question is getting is an indicator of how unsafe women feel around men, which while definitely emotional, is still a valid feeling (also itself an indicator of the general behaviour of men around women). Responding to that with "uhh uhh a bear is more dangerous than a man tho" is a bit fucked tbh.

On a more serious note I do agree it's an indicator of how women feel unsafe about men and I don't blame them but I think this question does more harm than good. For one the main argument put forward for choosing the bear over the men is that bears won't commit s*xual crimes, but this completely overlooks the fact that the vast majority of s*xual crimes are caused by people the victim knows rather than strangers but if the question was "Would you rather meet a bear or your father/uncle/cousin/husband/boyfriend/male aquaintance in the woods?" there would a lot less discussion. Thus I think this question is just outrage bait to create clicks, and lacks empathy too.

It boils down to this: animals are predictable (at least a majority of them). Humans are not predictable. You don't know exactly how a fellow human is going to react to you or if you are safe with said human. That's why women are choosing the bear.

HOLD IT! you know that a bear will most likely eat you if given the chance, so you’ll do your best to avoid it. However, a human is more alluring. If one man was picked at random somewhere in the world, what are the chances of that man being a cereal killer, or someone who will stab you in the back once you get to know him? You will know to avoid the bear, but if the man has shoulders that are as tense and massageable as FC’s, then you won’t be able to help but go to great length to get closer to him. The bear is the better choice.

@@juninja22hero NOT SO FAST! As The Bowl pointed out, the term 'Bear' can also apply to a *really* hairy, muscular man with a slight bit of dad bod. So, we are left at where we started off, is it better to encounter a bear, or a Bear? Also, statistically speaking, the chance that you pull a sadist from a pool of roughly four billion if you believe in the fifty-fifty population gender split is likely on the same level as getting hit by a car. Not too unlikely but avoidable if you're careful.
