To me, it doesn't even have to be a partner thing. It just feels like simple courtesy to me. I'm between jobs right now, and I live with two roommates, both of them guys. None of us is in a relationship, we're just friends. I don't cook their food, because... well, I'm not a good cook (lol) and we each have our own ingredients and food, but I do the dishes frequently even if only one of the plates and utensils used was 'mine' and there's a pile of dirty ones in the sink. I take out the recycling bin. I clean the kitchen when it's too dirty for my own tolerance. And I never bitch about it, and I thank them gratefully when they do any of it themselves. Why? Because they work. Right now, I don't. I have a lot of time to do it, they don't. I have all my energy to myself, they spend most of theirs on their job. When they come back home in the evening, they're tired and would like to enjoy some time just eating and doing something fun. They deserve it. They shouldn't have to do the same amount of housekeeping as I do, because it WOULDN'T be fair when you consider all factors. When I find my new job, *then* I can worry about requesting that everyone puts in the effort. EDIT: Not that they wouldn't. They typically try to help even when they're tired. I actually have to insist sometimes that they leave the dishes to me.
