Man shot, killed while stealing catalytic converters in Spring Branch area, police say

HPD said the thieves were taking a catalytic converter from a truck when an unidentified person shot at them. One of the thieves died at the scene.

I recently had both cats stolen while I was at lunch, waiting for a tow truck to show up. I thought I would be safe enough to leave the car on the side of the road for that long because it was across from the main entrance to the county jail. Sheriff’s deputies are in and out of there all day. Both cats alone came to over $5000. The cost to replace and repair the transmission damage done when they cut them off was never even brought up because my insurance totaled the car. I was out of a vehicle for about a month. Luckily I didn’t have to depend on that one vehicle for everything. Cat thieves should be shot on sight and left as an example.

@@DL101ca The newer versions of catalytic converters work just as well as the old ones and DO NOT have humongous concentrations of rare metals (Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium) which are worth several times the per weight more than gold - hence the thefts. The newer catalytic converters work just as well but use a fraction of those metals, essentially making thefts completely unprofitable. Let’s be clear; these thefts MOSTLY affect older vehicles which have older catalytic converters, each of which contains a literal “gold mine” of rare metals. The prices of those metals has virtually cleared the atmosphere over the last decade - making those catalytic converters realistically worth much more than they cost when they were originally manufactured. Example: Palladium was worth only $89.11 an ounce in 1992 (record low price). Palladium is now worth about $2,398.57 per ounce as of today (just checked online). The other rare metals have similar astronomical prices compared to about 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Those stolen catalytic converters are worth a mint to some crime king pin engineering these thefts. The low life parasites cutting them out are lucky to get $200 per stolen converter. Someone somewhere is making a killing smelting these converters down and reselling the RARE metals for todays prices. Ergo, it makes perfect sense to upgrade your catalytic converter to a modern version (the one on my Prius cost only $125) - it works just as well and thieves won’t normally steal it - though I still wrapped mine in a custom built cage! In the US, swap it out for a cheaper version and sell your old ones and make a tidy profit - unless you live in one of those states where this is categorically forbidden (like California).

Do some research on the prices of rare metals Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium, and compare this to what they cost 20 years ago - which incidentally is the approximate age of most stolen catalytic converters. The stolen converter that cost $1k when it was manufactured 10 - 20 years ago now contains metals that are worth over 5 times that amount by todays rare metal prices. At the end of the line after smelting, there could be about $4k profit per stolen catalytic converter for the Mr Big running the show. The foolish low life idiots doing the stealing are lucky to get $200 to $300 per theft. Maybe even less - depending on how desperate they are. Do some research - I’m not far off the truth here - this isn’t some conspiracy theory. Some crime syndicates are getting spectacularly RICH out of these thefts. All the more reason why not just the Police, but the FBI and Interpol should be carefully investigating this criminal revenue stream - and stopping it dead in its tracks!!! 😳🙄
