Man who survived 6 days trapped in truck after crash tells story

An Indiana man who survived six days pinned inside his truck after a crash is now telling the story of his rescue. NBC News’ Dana Griffin spoke with him exclusively and the two men who helped save his life.

In 1997, I was also omw to a funeral when I had a blowout on a state highway and rolled my vehicle twice. I had my 6 month old son reverse facing in the front passenger seat with a canopy raised over him. The canopy caught the broken glass from the windshield, and he was uninjured. And all that happened to me was a small, square shard of glass that embedded underneath my skin around my right knee. We were incredibly lucky.

On my keychain I carry a window breaker, which isn’t warranted for this story. Also, have a thin whistle. Obviously his car horn didn’t work. Imaginative on collecting water!

I have the same setup. One escape tool (window breaker/seatbelt cutter) and two loud whistles (one on my keychain and one in my center console). I'm thinking about buying a few more Escape Tools to put them in different storage places in the vehicle because when you crash things get toss around the cabin like that driver.

@@SteveSabbai I wouldn’t say no to any extra prep. I believe your keys will never be disengaged from the ignition slot, but then again… If your brain can be your friend in an emergency, even in the dark or under water you can find the key slot. I carry a gallon of distilled water, cause I drink this & am lazy to get glass filled before leaving. Have some snacks, definitely not enough to last Six days though. When I lived in snow country, ah the trunk had blanket, fire extinguisher & other items. After seeing these clips on people stranded in their cars, whatever the “H” in ya trunk does squat. Now bungee cord a container on passenger floor, o.k. Being funny, but gives ya food for thought where should other emergency items be? Of course rarely driving solves this predicament 😎.

I remember hearing about him being missing just before he was found … his partner said he took off after an argument and I think everyone assumed he may have committed suicide,but his family didn’t believe he would do that and said he served in the army and wanted the police to keep searching for him.Thank goodness the fishermen found him.The poor guy lost his leg…can’t even imagine how he’s coping under all these circumstances.😢Hoping he gets all the help he needs to heal

@@Runner8617 I’m certain it’s the same man I saw in a KZbin post as I said around X-mas and the news caster interviewed both the partner and even showed a surveillance footage from his house running down his driveway and away from the property.They also interviewed his parents and mentioned his service in the army.I know nothing has been mentioned of it after they found him so I also found it strange but I did see what he looked like in the video I saw and I’m certain it’s the same man.

There is nothing like receiving a cancer or any other life threatening diagnosis, to make you appreciate each day more than ever, always celebrate your Birthday and take time to let your family know how much you love them, I wish this young man had been able to do that without this accident but in the long run it may have saved his life.

Every day, just sitting in the same exact spot, in pain, starving, unable to move hardly at all. Cold nights with all kinds of critters around, and no way of fighting them off (luckily that didn't happen, but still) Phone just out of reach, and having to hear traffic pass by, including emergency vehicles. Every time thinking they were for him. And he'd eventually HAVE to go to the restroom on himself. 6 days is a long, long, long time to be trapped somewhere without being able to move. That water quite literally saved his life. A human can not survive without water for more than 4 days. I hope this never happens to someone else. Trapped and alone with no hope of ever being found, right under peoples noses.

This guy is going to lose everything. It might take some time. In 2 to 3 year the impact will slowly increase. This is America nobody will realize a full recovery. I have experienced this process.. It's real and it extremely powerful. I think doctors should consider the implications before they make someone suffer more than necessary.

His leg was pinned between the steering column and the inside of the truck for 6 days. A lack of blood flow meant his leg needed to be amputated.
