Sword of Mana is underrated. The Trials of Mana remake is currently my favorite
@toolman47452 ай бұрын
Trials of Mana remake looks great but I LOVE me some Seiken Densetsu 3 multiplayer. I played with my buddy in college, and I play it with my daughter now. I will probably have to pick up the remake at some point just because it looks so good, although I don't know if I'd ever play it.

Not sure what my all time fave is. But Secret of Mana was most definitely the very first game where the music truly moved me and I still remember fondly, and will for the rest of my life. Despite it individually not being my fave track, I really loved the vibe of that song/visual you get when you first enter the cave in Gaia's navel in that room with Neko between the two cave doorways. Probably the first time I truly felt immersed in the world of a game.

You're making me wanna go back and play all of the games I skipped after you explained how interconnected they are. You're actually the reason I went back and tried the original FF Legend/Saga games, and I don't regret it. I even like the super weird Saga games now after opening my mind a bit. I could see myself liking some of these Mana games in the same way. Thanks for the video.

Me too. Played it after reading Super Play Magazine (UK magazine which was the only one to focus on Japan and JRPGs) rave about it and I think it was their highest rated game. The music was so good I would just let it play in my stereo speakers. I recently bought the remake music, too. Canon balling in mode 7 or flying with flammie was a thrill. I had a multi tap which allowed me to play with two friends which was quite unique at the time. Then I imported FF 3(6) and I was hooked on JRPGs.

I must say that you are looking particularly dapper today David. I recently replayed through secret of mana with my wife and currently doing trials of mana. I’m super disappointed that it isn’t coming out for the switch but I am optimistic that it will get a release for the Switch2 and hoping it gets the same collector’s edition that they have with the plushie and everything.

Secret of Mana on SNES was my first coop game with my brother and sister back in the day when it released, it and it's characters really grew on us. So much that nobody of us was grumpy when they were player 2 and had to wait a bit until the scene for Primm to join the party was reached. I'm happy to see the franchise being back in such a glorious way. Of course now netcode would have to be involved, so expecting coop again, 2024 style, is a very big ask and i'm not sad if the newest game doesn't have online coop.

Sword of Mana is the only Mana game I’ve ever played, way back in the day before I even knew about the Mana series. And honestly, for a good decade, I considered it to be my favorite game of all time. I maybe have to give Visions a shot and see if it can capture a little of that.

I remember playing Secret of Mana on the SNES, but I can't recall much about it. Of course, I only played it once in '95 or '96. I have the Secret and Trials remakes for my PS4, but I haven't gotten into them yet. Too many good games keep coming out. But, I've pre-ordered this one, and I am definitely playing it as my next game. It was the demo that sold me. The other 2 are just going to have to wait a bit longer.

VERY well done dude! Fantastic video! Thanks to your videos talking about Visions of Mana a little while back, I remembered how much I loved Trials of Mana as a kid! But I never beat it and ended up hating Secret of Mana so I just abandoned the series. That is until about a month ago when I saw one of your videos mentioning the series. I immediately fired up my first ever playthrough of Final Fantasy Adventure, and my friends and I started playing through Trials of Mana. I have been absolutely loving both of them, and never would’ve thought to have given this series a second chance. So THANK YOU for making me go back!

I've always loved the Mana series. I remember playing Legend of Mana back for the PS1. This game and Alundra were the first 2 RPG games I've played. I know not many people did not liked Children of Mana, but I've liked for some reason. It had a charm that some Mana games did not had. I think it's a hidden gem in my eyes. Sword of Mana is also a good one to. I hope the Mana series continues to grow in th future.

Secret of Mana was one of the first JRPGs I ever played, and possibly the first one I owned a copy of - I also played a lot of Final Fantasy IV repeatedly rented from the video store (though it was called Final Fantasy II in the US at the time). Plus there was an obscure one called "Lagoon" but I think I got it without the instruction manual or something, and got completely stumped as to how to fight the first boss, so I didn't keep that game. I was in my freshman year of high school at the time, and I got so addicted to JRPGs it affected my grades. :( With "Final Fantasy Adventure" I found the controls too awkward to really play, but I enjoyed the remake Sword of Mana. Trials of Mana I originally played via fan translation, but I also bought an imported Japanese cartridge of Seiken Densetsu 3 and modified my SNES to be able to play it, and I've also played the remake on PS4. I previously had Legend of Mana on my Amazon wishlist (the PS1 version) but removed it once it went into collector's item pricing. I hadn't previously noticed it had been remade on newer systems, but I bought it on Steam while watching this video.

Like yourself I bought the original gameboy game as a child and had no idea of the series. Then my mind was blown in 1993 when I first heard the opening song Angel's Fear, I would just leave the opening playing in the background while doing homework. Legend of Mana would do the same with City of Flickering Destruction in the Jumi city. The series has randomly entered my life over the years and I love every time it does.

Good overview David!! Love the Mana series. But I have to question why you call Legend of Mana a spinoff. It always seemed like a mainline entry to me but i'm not sure now that I've seen this video. It was directed by Koichi Ishii,, just like the first three games in the series. Children of mana, which is a spinoff, had a different director and was one of the games that was part of the "world of mana" subgames including Dawn of Mana and Heroes of Mana. So it's a bit odd to me to see it as a spinoff!

Appropriate that you should call Legend of Mana the SaGa of Mana; it was directed by Akitoshi Kawazu, and even has the same artist as SaGa Frontier. Personally, I love this series, but I've only played the first three to completion, and only two remakes (Sword of Mana and the 3D Seiken Densetsu 3). I've at least tried most of the others (Visions of Mana can't run well enough to be playable on my current system), and I'm a pretty big fan, except for Heroes of Mana; I'm way too much of a bulldozer for most Turn-Based Strategy games, let alone Real-Time Strategy. Secret of Mana was my first, and despite its drawbacks, probably my favorite, mostly because of what a big adventure it is; the area outside of the Fire Palace has stuck with me all these years.
@osurpless2 ай бұрын
Not directed exactly, but having been at Square since the mid 80s, he had become the kind of “elder statesman” that would be brought on to struggling projects. Which is the case with Legend, as there was doubts it was going to make its original 99 release in Japan. I also appreciate the game more than my initial playthrough knowing his involvement, as the similarities to SaGa are quite clear.

It’s a solid game that could be better. Even the vaunted claim of “back to level 1!” goes away after you obtain some medals that you can equip prior to each. The main reason for even having it is because being able to toss every enemy and thing by default would make stunning and restunning too easy, and thereby the game as a whole.

I love secret of mana as much as angone, but I feel like you are making the common mistake of over-valuing its importance in the mana series. The first game is actually responsible for more of the series tropes than you emphasize and a lot of Sexret’s greatness doesn’t extend beyond Secret and its direct follow up.
