So I’ve just arrived in New Zealand 🇳🇿 and it’s compulsory to stay in a managed isolation hotel for 14 days on arrival. So in today’s video, I’ll be discussing everything you need to know on your arrival in New Zealand and what it’s like staying in the MIQ facilities here.
*Please keep in mind this video was filmed in May 2021, so some rules may have changed since then. Also, every managed isolation hotel is different so please remember this when watching. I stayed at the Four Points hotel by the Sheraton in Auckland city centre.

My name is Lana and I come from New Zealand!
I chose to leave my job as a nurse to go travelling in 2018, little did I know that I wouldn’t return to my nursing life. I continued on this path of travel to see the world and explore new food and cultures. I have fallen in love with travel and the interesting experiences that come with it. I love making videos and sharing my experiences with you guys!

Interesting to see the process coming home into MIQ! That's so good that they gave you a free SIM too 😮 it's really lucky you got to stay in Auckland and didn't have to have a further trip to Chch or Rotorua (heard that's not fun since it's another bus ride). Seems like a well managed isolation process and so thoughtful.. good on NZ 👍👍🙂 Glad your home safe and sound Lana! 😁🙌💕

Thank you for sharing your experience. I went through MIQ in December 2020. I was fortunate to have stayed at the Stamford Plaza, with a spacious room, huge bathroom (with bath separate from shower, and also a retractable washing line), and good food (including Christmas lunch and dinner). My main concern before arriving in Auckland was that I would find the room claustrophobic, given that windows at most hotels don't open. I somehow survived, as work kept me busy, the room had a huge window with an unobstructed view and, at the time, we were permitted to leave our rooms for exercise at any time, within the rules. It was good being able to order things from New World. I still think that MI should be in apartments, with a kitchenette and opening windows or a balcony. I guess it's the luck of the draw - a friend was assigned an apartment with a washing machine and another unfortunately had to endure a bus ride to a rather less-than-salubrious and relatively dilapidated hotel in Rotorua. I had expected to pay for my room upon checkout and not wait to receive a bill several weeks later. Quite ridiculous; the government created more work for itself having to chase unpaid bills.

Hello! Thanks for sharing your experiences in the comments. I’m sure this will help someone too. Yes some of us get lucky with more appliances and an open space. I’m guessing they’re trying not to overwhelm people on checkout but I wonder how that’s working for them with the bills getting paid

So excited to see this video Lara. We were looking forward to this video! Oh wow, such a great tip to have that carry one with must-haves. I love how controlled it is. I know some people might disagree, and yes, it might feel like a jail, but we haven't lived times like this in a century and the country must protect its citizens I wish the newsletter and some of those things could be done through an app to cut all that paper usage. What a relief to see the wine 😂😂 The alcohol limit is perfect! They give you more things than some Airbnbs hahaha We are heading to Romania in a week! I am gonna go check your videos now

Hi Lana Could you precise the cost of things? We are residents but not permanent residents yet, so we were told our stay in MIQ will cost about $4000 for 2 adults and 1 baby. But I'm wondering if that includes all the food, laundry and everything? Also what is the walking bus? Where do you go when you use it?
@LanaTiare
@LanaTiare 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marine, So the cost of MIQ for those on a temporary visa is $5520 NZD for the first adult and $2990 for a second adult. The baby will be charge free if under 3 years. This price comes with everything, the hotel, food, daily nurse visits, laundry and everything you have seen in my video. The walking bus is a daily bus that can take you to a field where you can walk in an open space. It’s available as soon as you test negative for COVID (usually day 2-3 of your stay). And you will meet at the given meeting spot and selected time. They will provide you with this info on your stay. However, I didn’t use the walking bus as I didn’t want to put myself at risk of being a close contact with someone. I hope this helps! All the best with your stay at MIQ!

Hi Lana!, did you have to pay for the hotel stay during MIQ or just the food and essential stuff?
@LanaTiare

Hi there, The hotel is cost free if you are a New Zealand citizen who left the country before 11 August 2020 and you intend on staying in New Zealand for 6 months or more. Included with your stay is Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The only other costs will be for optional food or grocery delivery. I hope this answers your question 😊

Hi Lana.. Thanks for the information regarding MIQ. Currently I'm trapped in Perth, Australia. Came here 6 weeks ago, not long after my arrival the bubble burst. I have 2 questions.. (1) As a NZ citizen who wants to return home permanently am I responsible for the full MIQ cost?. (2) I was given my 2nd vaccination 1 week before I left NZ. Does that have any impact upon the amount of time I will have to be in MIQ?. Thanks again.
@LanaTiare
@LanaTiare 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I’m not quite sure if you would have to pay or not, based on your situation I’d just give the MIQ contact a call. As usually the requirement is if you left NZ after 11 August 2020 you would be liable for charges of MIQ. And if you have a COVID vaccination currently you still have to complete the full 14 days in isolation. Hope this answers your questions, And if you wanted to clarify they do have a number: +64 4 931 5720 (For overseas callers).

@@Petitefee1003 out now. The food was hit and miss. The children’s menu was far to fancy for kids. My kids are no way fussy but they found the flavours far to mature. I ordered Uber eats most days for coffee. I took my own snacks for the kids and loaded up a suitcase but they were gone by the end of the first week. They had the Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon Chanel for kids. But I brought lego for my son as well as colouring in books and their Nintendo. We didn’t really get outside time. You have to walk anticlockwise outside and the adults were power walking and my kids couldn’t keep up with the speed and maintain distance. So after one attempt we never tried again. They just wanted to sit and play outside. But that wasn’t allowed. Id recommend bringing toys. Even if they are new ones in a separate suitcase you can surprise your child with. Expect a lot of screen time as well. And sweet treats to make it fun. Staff are lovely. They go the extra mile. They would do movie nights and slide the time for the kids movie on the peace of paper under the door and leave popcorn. My kids loved that. The stuff also adjusted the food for my son to make it more palatable for him as well. I’d bring enough clothes for the full two weeks as washing was a headache.
@Petitefee1003
@Petitefee1003 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the detailed answer! I'm not keen on so much screen time at such a young age (she's 20 months old) but I guess I'll put my ideas aside for those two weeks. I'm a bit worried about the food as well, we are vegans so I hope they respect that and offer options. As for the laundry she's in reusable nappies so... hehe it's going to be a nightmare
@AF-ov4hs
@AF-ov4hs 2 жыл бұрын
@@Petitefee1003 I am an anti screen parent as well. I had to put my ethos to the side for the two weeks. They were very good about dietary requirements and there was always vegan options on the menu. But for my kids I had multiple boxes of their favourite granola bars and snacks. I also requested extra pieces of fruit etc etc. You can also get groceries delivered depending on the facility your at but its a bit of a hassle so if possible id bring your own stuff and maybe do one order in the middle of it to get you to the end. Im not sure what they will do for a toddler but they did deliver a craft activity midway through that entertained them for an afternoon lol. Your only allowed to wash like 8 items and a single sock is an item. So not sure how you are going to go with reusable nappies. It may be worth using disposable nappies for it. However the staff were very accommodating for kids.
