I enjoyed watching this! Graduated from UoA on 2015 w/ a major in Psych but gives me such deja vu seeing familiar campus scenes. I'm going here next year to study Health Sciences (hopefully), and honestly one of the only things I'm worried about is not taking 10 years in the bathroom so other people don't get mad at me along with finding my way around. (Also: Do they let you in the lecture halls? Like, you can't just walk in?)

Ahahahha... honestly I don’t think anyone would judge you for taking 10 years in the bathroom. There’s a lot of toilets around campus buildings and on most levels. Don’t worry 🔆. I reckon you should come visit the campus before Uni to get a feel for things. But all new students get orientation at the beginning of the year so it shouldn’t be too bad. Also yes, you can pretty much just walk into lecture halls. In some big lectures there’s security for crowd control and general safety because of the large number of students entering and exiting at once. But it’s honestly super chill. Not as strict as high school 😂.

Yes, the University of Auckland does offer programs in Economics. 🤗 It will be on their website. www.auckland.ac.nz/en/business/about-business-school/economics.html You can complete a Bachelor of Arts in Economics or a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics (potentially alongside another complementary major). You can also do economics in other variations of undergraduate degrees. The degree is quite flexible so I would suggest asking for guidance with the staff to design the program you wish to study. I hope that helped 🔆💕.

Hi! I'm a second year medical student who went through the blende...I mean first year as well. Despite how you think you're doing, trust me when I say you've got this all on lock with everything you're doing, especially with COVID. Heck, I was a shambling mass of a human being in first year who looked dead all the time, and you're doing well to enjoy life alongside the demanding workload. It's also super cool that you're making this video to give the high school kiddos a snapshot into what first year is like, because it can be quite a surprise and overwhelming, especially when you're also given 70 slide lectures in the first week. Yeah I agree! Great way to make friends is to go to Uni clubs, events, and extra sessions outside Uni. Living in halls is also great for that!!! But, I always like to make the first move when trying to make friends because most people are just shy.

I’m actually tearing up. So many people (myself included) take our education for granted, we know we can go to uni and lots of people just go to procrastinate getting a job or to party and hook up with ppl- which is fine but then here you are studding your ass off because you truly want to be there. Ahh it just makes me think of all the people who don’t have access to education and desperately want to learn. Now I am super motivated to make the most of my education, in fact, I think I’ll go do some revision now instead of watching more KZbin videos or Netflix. 😊

Hi! Great video, really insightful lol :D I just wanted to ask, how did you decide on your degree? Is it something you really love or something you just wanted to learn more about? Also, (since you're in the biomed field) how essential would you say a knowledge of biology is for studying biochemistry in university? I'm currently in year 11 and I'm really torn because I love a lot of subjects, but don't have enough class spaces to take them all, and I'm scared that if I exclude certain classes it'll block off career pathways in the future. For example, I'm definitely taking chem next year but I'm still deliberating over taking bio or not (because of the lack of class spaces). You did a fantastic job on the video, it's been one of the better-made ones I've watched :]

Hello lovely!! I always knew that I wanted to study a science based degree at Uni and I was always super indecisive of what particular degree I wanted to pursue. The reason why I chose Biomed was because I knew it covered a wide range of courses and topics that I was interested in and it also gives me flexibility into further pathways of study. I know it’s a lot of work but I really do enjoy it and I’m making sure that I’m not putting too much pressure on myself with careers because biomed is already competitive by itself. 🤗 Also, in terms of knowledge required for studying biochemistry, I would say to just check the requirements of entry into the degree and that should be enough. I would strongly encourage you to have a good understanding of chemistry because it forms a major part of the degree (labs, courses, projects, etc.). Biology, on the other hand, is interesting and having basic knowledge is probably enough (but just check the requirements of the degree). Just remember that everyone has different levels of understanding due to variations in their quality of learning at high school so the University has to re-teach everything to ensure everyone is at the same level. I think for you right now just be open to subjects and just take the ones you enjoy that give you a bit of diversity in your degree choices. I can’t really make the choice for you because I don’t know you entirely. But I do want to stress that if you make it to your last year in high school and don’t take biology, which is needed for a degree that you want to pursue, you can still possibly take it if you show the University that your keen and it’s truely your passion. You’ll just need to do more work and take extra classes to make up for anything you may not have done in high school. Biology in NCEA (especially level 3) is honestly lacking knowledge when it comes to anatomy and physiology and I felt the least prepared in that area (despite the fact that I have taken Biology throughout high school and also did scholarship biology). But out of level 2 and 3 NCEA, I would say level 2 is more helpful because it covers topics like genetics that is SUPER helpful for biochemistry. At the end of the day, the education system shouldn’t hold you back from pursuing something in University. It’s all up to you 💕🔆.

I have another question...what do you think about the MAPAS scheme? (You can be totally honest)Do you know any in biomed this year? I’m thinking of applying just to have a “group” y’know. I’m quite introverted so I’d find it much easier this way. I’m also aware that some people might feel a bit “meh” about it. Is it true that people lowkey belittle people who join through this? I also plan to achieve the same standards that everyone else is aiming for admission into the courses. It’d be nice to get an opinion from an actual student.

I don’t really have that much first hand experience into the MAPAS scheme. In saying so, I personally feel like most people don’t REALLY know who is part of the MAPAS scheme and I haven’t seen anyone belittle anyone for this reason. I think the MAPAS scheme is an amazing pathway that allows for diversity and representation. I do understand the views against certain factors of it, but I do believe having such a scheme is important. I think a lot of people aren’t fully aware of the MAPAS scheme in the first place (especially in first year) so I don’t believe your peers will treat you any differently. I think it’s also a good way to find a community, especially if you’re more on the introverted side. I’m glad you mention achieving the same standards because that will get you a long way (with or without the MAPAS scheme). I think your reasons are clear and you should have no problem with choosing to apply to the MAPAS scheme. Education is important, so I don’t think anyone should get in the way of that. At the end of the day, people are just too busy living their own lives and tackling their own problems that no one will be invested in your life. University life is different from high school because of this! I think you will be absolutely fine with or without the scheme! Do what feels right to you and don’t worry about other people ❤️. I’m not too sure to be completely honest and I don’t want to give you any false information. But from what I’ve heard, I do think it is good :) Again, I don’t know you personally so I wouldn’t be able to tell you whether you would be suited to the environment. But my general observation is that the environment is friendly and the education is quality. I will say that there are often a large number of students so you have to be willing to reach out to lecturers/tutors if you need clarification or help. There is also a good level of diversity in Auckland (and New Zealand, in general) so you will find the life to be very dynamic. You will probably make a lot of friends as well because there are quite a lot of international students that are probably in the same boat. Hope this helped, take care!
