As a manager, I am sorry that your expectation is not the reality. As a manager you should take accountability for the team, and do not let anyone higher in the hierarchy shoot a bullet to your team in the middle of an open space. I would not allow that... If a member of the team fail, help him to learn why he failed and empower him to be better next time. I am sure you won't read that but thank you for your job.
@johnsmith-ro2tw2 жыл бұрын
lol. The reality of the middle manager taking accountability for the team is that later on, he will put the blame on that engineer during a 1 on 1 conversation. And he will make sure the blame is reflected in the performance review. We live in a time of people, especially middle managers, never taking any responsibility for anything, except for when the project is successful and the customer shares they are happy with the deliverables.

While this is very true, if you have the ability to defend yourself and fight to keep your job, don't hesitate to do it even if you lose. Company may not like it, but you show up the next day getting right back to it. Keep things pro even when they don't, because, they never know if they made a huge mistake doing whatever they did to you. You'll move on growing, and the moment they ask for you back, it's already too late. Just a thought for the up and coming.

I've had different managers. Some were amazing and others were horrible. I think I was fortunate to have the amazing managers first because I learned new skills and how to do my work effectively. When I met with a horrible manager, it forced me to look at myself and think about the future. Good managers taught me how to be a great employee. The bad managers taught me that I can only make myself happy and make difficult decisions that will benefit me.

Sadly, lived this many times. Had manger shut me up after he asked for input in meeting. He just wanted a quick consensus that the tech implementation was going to work so the meeting could be over. He didn’t want to hear about how we couldn’t really use the $25k of hardware we bought and payed additional $$ to install because we didn’t have $120 control module to enable and control most of the functionality. 🤷♂️ But hey, instead of solving a problem today, it’s much easier to field unending support tickets for it indefinitely because something doesn’t work correctly, right? Sure the customer is pissed off most of the time, but you get to show the them the metrics on how many times you’ve come to address the problem over the years. Isn’t that what really helps the customers in the end? How much time we put into looking at their issues without really resolving them?

The only reason I can think of for managers being so trash is the Peter Principle: The Peter principle is a concept in management developed by Laurence J. Peter, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to "a level of respective incompetence": employees are promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another. Very hard job to be a manager and extremely few do it well but at the same time many aspire for that kind of role. My impression is more that 3-4/5 don't even know the basics in the field they are working with and panic as soon as there is a problem they do not understand causing unnecessary stress for others and eventually they burn out.
