Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is relatively rare, and yet its diagnosis is invoked with a fair amount of frequency in acute care settings. This is not unwarranted, as it is a crippling disease that is a bona fide surgical emergency. If attended to in too delayed a fashion, a patient can be left paralyzed, incontinent, and impotent. In this Medmastery lesson, from our Neurology Masterclass: Managing Emergencies, we review the detailed management of cauda equina syndrome.
Handle neurological emergencies with confidence after taking this course. Find out what’s wrong with your patient and treat them fast.

To those reading this, many medical professionals won’t tell you this, but YOU CAN FULLY RECOVER FROM THIS SYNDROME!!!! Physical therapy, exercise, and deep massaging of those numb nerves can come back. Our bodies were designed to heal itself, nerves repair themselves, it just takes time. Don’t settle for less than you were born to be……Don’t lose hope, it will get better. Just don’t keep sitting there and laying there accepting that situation.

Well explained and I went through cauda equina emergency operation and symptoms were similar. It is rare and my cause was trauma brought on by very heavy lifting in my job.

I'm glad that your doing better and praying for you I'm getting ready to make a appt to have surgery cause I've had 2 spinal stenosis and went through heck and everything turned out fine but having this bowel/urine incontinence and being weak and can't eat it's to much 😫 I'm over this mess I'm just tired of surgery...... but to stop this incontinence I'll do anything I'm done ☹

Have acid trips and it will help the nerves reconnect. I have managed to undo about 90% of the damage having a trip every month or so.

I had very slow onset. When I was 21 I noticed it was difficult to pee first thing in the morning, then as time went on I found it difficult to maintain an erection as i couldn't feel much during the deed. Then started getting leg pains for years and occasional pain in back and side. It wasn't untill I was 28 that I went to A&E because I couldn't walk, sleep, or pee. Had emergency surgery same day. I still have patches of numbness in my legs and butt 7 years after surger but still lucky to others who suffered this condition. .

@@Dipanshi_here Not long at all. Once the anaesthetic wore off I was away ha.. Felt like a rusty cog in my back was clicking with every step but by the third day I was completely pain free when walking and signed myself out of hospital. Other guys on the ward were there for weeks so I think being younger really helped.

What is the likelihood of recovering from addle anesthesia if early, successful emergency surgery is performed?

I had emergency surgery 24 hours following rapid onset of saddle numbness, following two weeks of worsening “sciatica” (as diagnosed by my PCP and an Urgent Care). They did not image me and I am paying the price now. Only a week past surgery so I’m hoping I will get something back in the months to come.

I'm having those symptoms 2weeks ago doctors didn't sent me to the ER. Bowel movements with diarrhea only, bladder seems to be ok. But i can't feel sensation to bowel movement... Numbness in the groin 90%, buttocks feel mildly numb. Legs feels weak. Non sleeping due to struggling to breath deeply. Muscle relaxers help with sleeping as they allow me to take almos deep breaths but not full deep. My body posture changed, as in my walking. Still can walk but feel insecure for the weakness. Two weeks in this situation is too late to being assisted and recover my functions?

@@johnreygavaran7373 Hi, much better, still numbness but the other symptoms almost normal. I'm still planning another study (EMG) but I don't have health insurance. The thing is that having bad anxiety disorder (GAD) made it worse than it was...so I'm waiting to improve slowly and, if this comes back worse then I'll need surgery immediately but...I hope to be OK.
