Dear Mrs Sylvestre, thank you very much for this very informative video. My 17-year-old cat broke her back leg at the femur into two pieces. Unfortunately, she can't undergo surgery until she becomes a bit stronger to handle the anesthesia. It has already been 10 days since the leg was broken, and the surgery is expected in another 10 days. One vet suggested that it might be impossible for her to have a functional leg if the operation is delayed by 20 days from the date of the fracture and recommended amputation. However, another vet assures me that he can still operate on her leg. Could you please inform me about the maximum number of days within which a leg should be operated on for a good chance of it becoming functional again? Your advice will be greatly appreciated

Thank you for your comment. I am sorry to hear about your 17 year old cat with a broken femur. Not knowing anything about your cat, not having seen the X-rays and not knowing why she is not strong enough to handle anesthesia makes it difficult for me to comment. I think that 20 days is a long time; that does not mean she won't do well but it does mean the surgery will be much more difficult. This would be the type of case for a specialist surgeon to handle. I do not know if you have any specialty hospital near you but it might be something to consider given the age of your cat, the length of time the bone has been broken, making the surgery more difficult and the fact that she has other issues that are preventing her from having a timely anesthetic. I too have a 17 year old cat (and a 15 year old dog), I wish you all the best with her.
