This was one of the most informative videos I was able to find. Thank you! My dog's front paw got run over by a car, and without going to a vet (I can't afford 1000$ bill at the moment), I'm certain it's either torn or partially broken. No open wound, the bone structure looks all right, just severe pain and no appetite. I tried making a splint but she has no interest in wearing it. I guess she's on house arrest for 8 weeks.....

@@focusandflourish5168 She is well! I finally got an appointment for a vet - the vet said that he wanted to wait for the swelling to go down in the first place before fitting a splint on anyway. I was worried about needing treatment ASAP. (emergency vet versus regular clinic have very different prices). Time will heal her the most, but I will keep her on short walks (she has so much energy she needs to walk) until ~8 weeks. Again thank you for your informative videos!

How do you splint with slow healing wounds and fluid pockets in the foot? This is on a formerly feral cat originally with deep puncture wounds. Due to not weight bearing, his foot became swollen and he would then bite it causing additional wounds and also a purulent abscess, which is now resolving. The ring finger digit on his right back foot is broken. He will weight bear some on the foot when it is dressed and wrapped with Coban.

Hello and thank you for your comment. Cats can be a challenge to splint and fractures of the paw typically are very slow to heal; so you are dealing with a doubly difficult case here. If the paw is swelling within a bandage it may be the way the bandage is applied. Most commonly not enough padding, perhaps not enough compression; the bandage layers maybe in the wrong order, not evenly applied or not distal enough on the paw. It would also be important to identify the cause of the fluid pockets and have them properly treated. If there are abscesses and fluid filled pockets, it would be important to use more layers than just the Coban, I would think. I apologize as I don't feel that my answer is very helpful as I don't have a good understanding or grasp of the scope of this cat's problem.

Thank you for this video. My 4 month female whippet took a turn to quickly at the park and fractured 3 toes on front paw. I brought her to er they xrayed splinted and sent home medicine said to follow up with my vet in about a week but be prepared for her to have pins put in and surgery. After trying to research not much came up. So thank you for your video it at the least explained things

You are welcome! At least now you have some information and can ask the correct questions from you regular vet. Good luck with your whippet

My small shepherd whacked left rear foot on a patio chair, immediately gimped, recovered. One hour later, he's gimping. Many dogs in our life in this household, mostly shepherds and this is a first. The injury is about five days old and he recovers on the patio but gimp when on grass. After five days of the above gimping, I knew that this was going to be a long recovery, but came here to get an estimate. Thanks, doc.!

What if the middle phalanx is dislocated and not fractured? I went to the vet and none recommended a reduction due to the fragile nature of the bone. They just asked to let the dislocated bone be like that. Just asked to keep her in a room and limit her activity for a month.
@focusandflourish5168Ай бұрын
Hello and thank you for your comment. These bones are small and can be very difficult to put back into place AND have them stay in place. My preference with a dislocation (if it just happened) is to try and reduce it (put it back in place) but success is not guaranteed :(

Most vets are asking $6500-$8000 on a repair. Which is kinda insane.

Medical care is expensive, I agree. That when pet insurance for accidents/emergencies can be helpful. Especially in the first couple of years of a pets life. That’s when trauma/fractures are highest

I hope you can help me with advice. My cat broke his middle toe on his left hind leg. The toe is displaced and slightly raised from the others, and crooked. Im not sure if its broken or dislocated. Does the bone need to be set first before immobilizing in a splint, or can it be straightened out with just bandages and a splint by itself?
@focusandflourish51682 ай бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that your cat has suffered this injury. If it is a dislocation, it would be worth having your vet try to put it back into place. A dislocation can be painful for a long time. If it is a fracture then it would be very difficult to re-align the pieces are they are so small but a splint will help.

I accidentally stepped on my husky paw while she was jumping towards me, she ouched but she started to limp only about 10 days later, more and more. Now it has been passed about almost 3 weeks since accident and I just remembered what happened to her, but put it aside as she was alright later that day. I see her paw is widened when she stands, and second finger is a little bit out of alignment. I put her bandage and got a walking shoes to keep her paw safe, do you think the fixed bandage can and will help in healing the paw? Do you recommend some extra supplements to aid the healing, like more vitamin B or similar? I give her Boswellia supplements for dog's joint.

hows she doing? i did the same for my cat hes always limping! what did u end up doing?
@woodenleaves2 ай бұрын
@@Catlover10-z9w she's much better, thank you for asking. She rested a lot, and I put an elastic bandage on her paw to ease her walking. I added Vit C and boswelia serata for dogs to her diet. Yesterday she has been running, and there is just a little limping here and there, but overall much better. Her paw seems to be normal shape, and the bandage did the job. I think you can do the same to your cat if you're sure the paw is injured. The vet told me long time ago cats heal faster and the bones set to place with time, no worries on that. But rest is needed.

Doctor, what happens with metatarsophalangeal dislocations, do you suggest bandages and splints as well?
@focusandflourish51683 ай бұрын
Hi and thank you for your comment. With a disarticulation, I would first try to reduce the luxation if possible and then apply a splint for at least 2-3 weeks. If reduction is not possible then a splint can help to control the pain but until it has sufficiently fibrosed in its new luxated location then it will cause some discomfort to the patient. I hope this information is a bit helpful.

Does this apply to the carpal?
@focusandflourish5168 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. The information in this particular video does not apply to the carpus. The carpus is a joint and therefore tends to require more precise reconstruction. Having said that, it truly depends on the type of fracture itself, some can be managed without surgery. It is best to have the fracture evaluated by a veterinary surgeon to get the best information.

OUR 8 MONTH OLD PUP A BORDER COLLIE MIX IS VERY ACTIVE, WE BELIEVE HE BROKE THE OUTSIDE TOE ON HIND LEG. IS IT NECESSARY TO GO TO VET? HE IS NOT WHINING JUST LIMPING ROUND, STILL RUNNING AROUND THE YARD. WHAT SHOULD WE DO, ITS MY TEEN SONS PUP AND HE RELLY CANT AFFORD THE VET, I DONT WANT TO HAVE HIM GO THRU THE STRESS OF THE VET, CAN WE LEAVE IT ALONE?
@focusandflourish516811 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. So the hardest part in answering your question is not really knowing what is really going on with the toe. Assuming it actually is fractured what your vet will likely do is immobilize (with a bandage/splint) the paw which will help with some of the pain and then likely give your dog something for the pain. Given how young your pup is the fracture would heal pretty quickly (maybe 5-6 weeks). The good news is that the outside toe (5th digit) is not a major player in the dog's ability to walk and use the leg (once the pain of having a broken bone has dissipated of course); so a fracture 5th digit does not typically have longterm consequences.

I am sorry to hear that your dog has broken her paw :( but glad to hear that she has a splint :) Splints need to be kept clean and dry and changed at regular intervals. Keep an eye on your girl for any signs that the splint is causing her problems and if you notice anything, call your vet. Best of luck to you and your girl.

MY PARTNER AND I HAVE A 6 MONTH OLD PUP A PITBULL BULLY MIX, HE DOESN’T WHINE UNLESS HE PUTS WEIGHT ON IT OR SOMETHING AND THE VET SAID A RADIOGRAPH AND EVERYTHING WOULD COME UP TO ABOUT 1200 DOLLARS WHICH WE DON’T HAVE AT THE MOMENT. WE DON’T EXACTLY KNOW IF IT’S BROKEN OR NOT BUT IM PRETTY SURE IT IS. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR ANYTHING?
@focusandflourish51688 ай бұрын
Hello and thank you for your comment. It is always difficult to suggest a treatment without knowing for sure what the problem is. It is important to be sure that the possible fracture or sprain is actually in the paw; as opposed to the wrist joint or further up. But if it is for sure in the paw then I think you could ask your vet to help you manage this problem in a way that is affordable to you. As veterinarians we are trained to give the best treatment options for the patient (maybe that's surgery or a splint) but the goal is (should be) always to help the pet in the best way that is available for that pet. Maybe at this time for you, advice like restrict his activity to only out to relive himself and always on a leash, until the paw has healed would be the work. And maybe some pain medication to help your dog be comfortable for now. The problem with splinting a broken paw is that the bandage needs to be changed on a regular basis and that become costly but at 6 months of age, your pup will heal faster than an adult dog so maybe it actually wont cost quite as much (?). Again, without a proper diagnosis, it is difficult to make a prediction; and treatment advice based on assumptions can lead to all sorts of trouble, just be aware. Good luck with your boy!

I just spent 4 grand on a fracture for my dog that I had to come up with in 2 days because I had to. That’s the choice you make when you own a dog looking into pet insurance is important I wish I would’ve known sooner. She was hit by a car and it got her paw thank god just that so she needed a plate. I hope the pup is okay.
