I have an addition to the studio monitor argument. Ahem. Listen to your monitors. I mean just really listen to them. Good advice to play your favorite songs on them. Get to know them. It doesn't matter what you have so long as you really listen. What songs do you like to hear on your car stereo? Go and play them in your flat studio and see what your monitors sound like.

The genre means as much as anything. Hip Hop/Rap tends to be bottom hyped, since the tempo is usually slow, the bass tones can have longer decay times from the kick. Busier kick beats usually have much shorter release and compressed attacks. The #1 thing I do is determine from the get-go, is this a kick drum heavy track or a synth/real bass heavy track, because usually the both don't exist in the same mix IF bottom end is pronounced in the mix. Its easy for the low frequencies to get muddied. Another problem is mismatched frequencies between the kick and the bass instrument track, I usually solo-up those tracks to make sure there isn't freq-beating, destructive ( and some complimentary) phase issues. Also, you'd be surprised just how often you actually don't need a bass track if the arrangement provides that. Prince's "Kiss" and "When Doves Cry" don't have bass tracks.

Another great instructional video from Mr. B! I just bought a used Avid C24 and I noticed that's the same control surface you use. Please keep the videos coming; with a lot of study at KZbin University I just may be able to learn how all these cables, knobs and buttons make wonderfully-sounding recordings! :-)

Imma try this out today. I sequence desktop synths and drum machines with MIDI (and CV) and mix their audio outs into a 24 track analog mixer. Mixing line level inputs (-10dBV or +4dBu) is SO MUCH easier than mic level inputs and I do a pretty good job of keeping things clear and balanced but I still have a lot of headroom that I could fill up. Additionally I do noticed that my kick drum tends to be a bit weak thru 💩speakers -- eschewing no real available compression options I tend to crank the bass EQ instead ... your advice seems much more sane. Thanks again!

"Have you ever asked a guitar player to turn down the bass on their amp?" LOL Actually, I did have a problem doing mixing for a live Christmas concert. At practice about a week or two before the event, there was too much muddy bass & nothing I could do about it as the bass amp was out of my control. I had a think about this, and decided to try putting the bass amp up on a stand to decouple it from the stage floor which was at about audience head height, spilling excess low end boundary reinforcement directly at the audience. Well I tactfully explained that there was a problem that would not be apparent to anyone on stage, but was bad for the audience. So, I built a heavy MDF butterfly stand that lifted the amp and angled it upwards some to decouple it from the stage floor. Stand hinge was a webbing strap, added cork feet and lined the amp seat with more cork. Absolutely no vibrations & it killed the problem stone dead. The Bass player was very happy with his tone & so was the audience. It was one of those rare wins on the 1st guess. In fact I think it was possibly the best concert with the tightest bass line I have ever mixed. I came home from that one stoked & with absolutely no regrets.

i don't like at all and i don't use mono/blue-tooth/smart speakers... but lots of people do, and honestly the sound on some of those is just amazing these days.. compared to what was available just 10 yrs ago, the sound improved A LOT for portable/small speakers...

Cars are the worst for sound if it has the factory sound system especially if its an older car, I can mix a song that sounds good on a boombox/headphones/cheap to a good sound system but it will still suck in a car stereo, it's like you need a separate mix just for the car.
