Thank you for your video! I'm going into my 12th year in the same school and my students aren't accustomed to silent art, even for 5 minutes and not as a punishment. What are ways I can start a silent art routine when my students are used to talking throughout the entire work time?

I frame it more as a reset than a consequence. It allows students to enjoy making their artwork. I’ve done a 5 min silent art focus to begin the art making in the past too. Students like it because they get more done and they could focus. Consider playing music or what I do it podcasts to encourage them to settle in and work quietly.

Great ideas! Looking for ideas for 6th grade. What do they get for the Mona Lisa tallies?

In 6th, I let them earn privileges. If they earn a golden paintbrush they don’t sit on the carpet for the lesson. We have days they can sit with friends or work outside (my room connects to a courtyard). Then end of each quarter we do a ketchup and pickle day.
