I think the flashbacks in this movie are more than flashbacks; they are memories. Most flashbacks take the audience back in time, but in this in movie the flashbacks are currently happening in Lee Chandler's mind.

There's one flashback which stood out to me a lot in this film, its when Lee is remembering him, his brother, and young Patrick playing together, I think its the one where they're on the boat joking about sharks, and its a happy joyous flashback which starts during Lee's drive to the hospital at the start of the film. What stands out to me is how this flashback ends. It ends completely abruptly, almost as if its interrupted mid sentence, and you're cut immediately back to seeing the broken Lee driving his car, alone. That cut was like a punch in the face it was such a big jump from a happy emotional high, Lee playing with his brother and nephew, to a gut wrenching low, with Lee desperately rushing to reach the hospital before his brother dies.

The scene where Lee grabs a cops gun and puts it to his head was so intense, the audience literally gasped out loud.
@lpr52695 жыл бұрын
Yeah and it was so realistic too. Cops keep their safeties on to prevent an accidental discharge of the gun, so when he pulled the trigger, he couldn't figure out why it wasn't firing which gave them time to wrestle the gun from his hand.
@robertosucci11514 жыл бұрын
Ik the performance was pretty natural. It shows he is a depressed man with almost no attachement to anything. When his bro dies he is sad yet not shown such a way. Truly deserved the oscar
@MasterBetty694 жыл бұрын
Paul y half true. The cops gun was a Glock & didn't have a safety. The officer carried it without a round in the chamber. That's why when Lee pulled them trigger you heard a click, & he quickly tried to rack the slide to put a round in the chamber. They officers grabbed his hand before he could finish racking the slide, & if they didn't, he probably would of shot one of them by mistake in the scuffle.
@ADifferentVibe4 жыл бұрын
@@lpr5269 he did fire the gun but there was no bullet in the chamber. That's how heartbreaking it was to see him want to end his life without hesitation.

Can we talk about the use of music and the sound mixing..I don't know how to explain it but the use of the classic music and the silence between dialogue is so potencial..

Andrés Pauta Right? I loved that they saved the huge orchestral moments for only really key plot points. It made it so effective with the contrast of the very muted and subdued scenes.

This movie, particularly Casey Affleck's performance as a depressed man, really hits home. I could relate many of the scenes to what happened in my life. You could easily tell from Lee's eyes that he is simply not there. Terrific performance by Casey Affleck.

Yeah.. like feeling distant from people around you. You are there but you are actually not present. People try to approach you but, you can't connect with them. It's like a part of you is lost, you have lost the touch with that human element inside you. It just feels like you don't belong here.

Buc Nasty don't get me wrong, Denzel was brilliant but I'm so freaking happy that Academy for once in like hell knows how many years acknowledged more subtle and far less theatrical acting. Actors put so much more thought into these kinds of performances, yet they don't get recognized for this because they're not screaming or crying out loud towards camera.
@fredrikstaffansson44733 жыл бұрын
The fact that the flashbacks/memories come unannounced makes them feel more like something that just happens, that Lee can't control, rather than a moment where he would close his eyes and think back. And they are connected to what is happening Lee, for example when he's confronted with the prospect of going back to Manchester he (unwillingly) remembers the fire.

I love this movie. It felt so genuine how the flashbacks would happen. It felt so organic, how little things can bring a memory back. This film handled memories superbly, something as small as a song, a shirt, or a street can bring back memories of a grandfather or uncle or brother.

Fantastic. I've been studying film for so long now, I don't put much thought into something that's present as often as a flashback lol. Though I loved the use of flashback in 500 Days of Summer. His remembering things differently, once he feels differently about them.

Austin's Obsession Productions My finger slipped and I accidentally hit the dislike button lol but I agree with u and the video. U should also analyze the use of dark humor in Manchester. The cell phone calls, awkward conversation, slipping in the snow. Not fitting the gurney into the ambulance.
@austinsop74347 жыл бұрын
Ya, I always appreciate a healthy inclusion of dark humor in these heavy subject films. Whenever I build up the nerve to re-watch Schindler's List I'm always surprised by how much humor is in it lol. I think it does a lot toward helping us relate to likable people in the midst of a terrible tragedy. And speaking from experience an extremely cathartic part of dealing with grief is joking around, or reminiscing with loved ones about the one you lost. I loved the relationship between Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges; the way they always gave each other crap, or joked with each other. It felt familiar and real, and human. Good stuff.

Kubrick used unnanounched flashbacks and dream sequences in his movies too. For example, in Full Metal Jacket, the scene where they beat Pyle in his bunk, that is dream or reverie. Kubrick did leave clues though. Listen to the soundtrack in the aforementioned scene, it is meant to sound like someone snoring or at least someone breating deeply and slowly while they slumber. There are unnanounced dreams or reveries in The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and 2001 ASO.
