I was homeless in Manchester for 5 yrs it became a way of life in 2000 when the commonwealth games came they locked everyone one the streets up for begging Weather or not you were...I did around 3mnths in strange ways got out left Manchester. ..but the life I lead for the past 5 yrs was all I knew I was a drug hadict and it took until around 2008 to recover then in 2010 my mum died and I could see I I didn't do something I'd be back on the street is I moved to where I live now ...on arrival I stayed at a shelter st a church where I'd dream of a different life...I meet a woman from one of the other churches who helped out at the shelter and after making positive steps forward with her help kicked the drugs and street life for good we were married soon after ...me for one didn't think I'd ever be married or even go to church but I did it had a positive affect on me and when life did let me down as it dose it wasn't as bad as it was when I was on the street...we even got a little girl who's now 9 and adores me I didn't think anyone could ever love me but they do...I'm proud of myself and what it took to get me here..mill never forget Manchester cos the people who gave were good honest people and those that past by mostly were just imbarrised...and a few nasty ones...I'm my town I never pass a begged without having 5 minutes for them. They know I'm in the same boat as them but I'm married now and have responsibility. ..I know people who are willing to help homeless so I put them into check with them....just my bit to help out...it's still hard for me to get work so I go around the skips and find stuff to sell to help with food and stuff at home...every beggar knows me knows they can calling for a meal and a shower at mine...I try engage them with church for those who have gone to church it's helped them out and they no longer homeless. ...and some just go for a free meal and go there way. .they still homeless....but it don't mean I can't help then next time and the time after no one knows like me how many chances a man might need before he feels he can live life without comdemnation for the way we live...great short film...1995-2000 Manchester was a different place....

Tinted Media I think the people who have to do a job they hate to support their family are the real fools, don’t you? And what type of life does a minimum wage really offer? Its quite hard to get up every day to go to a job if you have no future or end goals. You don’t need to have sympathy for someone to acknowledge their struggles, it’s a blessing to not understand the mind state these people are in but you don’t need to discredit it. This could happen to you.

The whole situation really is heartbreaking. My husband and I bought a house (we both had good paying jobs,) had a baby, and within a year of going back to my job I was laid off. That same year I got super sick and was in the hospital 4 times. The last time I was in intensive care for almost 2 weeks. Each of those 4 hospital stays cost us thousands and we have good insurance! We almost lost everything. Eventually we realized that we needed to file for bankruptcy. It's been 5 years now and we're finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, at least financially. During this time of being sick I also sank into a deep clinical depression with the added bonuses of anxiety and panic disorder, just to make sure I could barely function. It's been really difficult, but l have my husband and we have family that has helped. We are very fortunate in that respect. I hope and pray that a solution is reached and that people can live indoors. Be treated like people, not a problem. Best of luck to all of the people featured in this series.

On the video of homeless women produced by the BBC 1/3 of the comments are asking why isn't BBC talking about the men. This particular documentary on homeless men came out before the one on women, but there are no comments on this video of "Why aren't you talking about the women?". Huh.

What you have is these young people being born for the sake of a shaggy. The parents claim benefits for them and when they come of age they,re tossed out onto the streets and turn to crime then go to prison where they become institutionalised leave prison then homelessness. They want to blame the government but it's not the government, s fault it's their fault for not educating themselves and laziness sets in. They all want someone and something to blame. SHAME

Sorry but whether you like it or not, that shop is private property, and they can evict you if you want- they own it, they can do what they want with it, and it's not yours to stay there.

These people are probably mainly homeless through no fault of their own. When you leave somewhere like a hostel or bedsit you are (as the council say) making yourself intentionally homeless. I’ve handed my notice in from this supported housing place in Cornwall and have a month plus a week for me, social worker et cetera to find me somewhere to live. I can afford 450pcm and can get a flat for this money BUT I need a guarantor who can cover my rent if, for some really odd reason, my housing benefit stops - my parents have said if it comes to it I can stay with them as a temporary arrangement. Thank God I still have my parents on my side- lots of people I’ve come across who are homeless have came out of prison but they get no help when they get released. No CPN, no social worker / no. Nothing. This is why the same people get another sentence shut three months after coming out - no support and no where to live. It should be the local council who have the job of housing these Homeless lads and lasses. You are liable to get spat at, called a junkie prick, get punched in the face and even get knife attacked. I feel really sorry for these lads who’s only possessions are those they carry around with them - in a backpack. Peace all

5.05 it depresses the fuck out of me that young fit virile and vital European young men like this should even think to say that prison is no problem and it's the same as out here. Ok I'm an older man now and I have done 3 prison stretches but when I was inside I always knew it was better to be out even with no money and no directions I knew just to be out breathing fresh air was better what the fuck are we doing to our young men wake the fuck UP Europe

The only people I look down on are those that think they are above others! Drugs, mental health, poverty & abuse are in my opinion the main reasons for people either becoming homeless or staying homeless.

Unfortunately a large proportion of homeless people are living with mental health or addiction issues. Two major area's successive governments have failed to address. It's very easy for others to judge however, when you work with these individuals you get a better understanding of what it's truely like to be without hope.

2:45 his intentions are good but he is an idealist that doesn't fully understand (or want to acknowledge) most of the people he surrounds himself with have been given chance, after chance, after chance, after chance. As much as everybody deserves a second chance, everybody is also responsible for their actions. He sees himself as a maverick and savour of the homeless but he suffers from the same issue: lack of responsibility for his actions and the situation he finds himself in. The people that do "sort themselves out" aren't in this documentary, because they're no longer on the streets. Documenting the lives of homeless people does well to give people a glimpse of what it's like, but a relatively short snapshot like we see with this series doesn't show the full picture and provides a skewed view, biased in the favour of the homeless.

What these people need is hope and alternative ideology. Firstly if you deal with alcohol and drug issues, there should be free facilities in place to facilitate rehab or CBT to change their behaviours and habits. Secondly they need someone to believe in them, like a friend or family member to raise their self-esteem, they also need to believe in themselves by raising self-worth. Thirdly they need to find purpose. You have two choices in life; you can either give up and never accomplish anything, moan about the system and continue living sad or you can try and find purpose. Work hard and set goals towards something or anything. The problem I mostly see in people is that they are way too comfortable or not strong enough to change. You have to want to change to change behaviour. You have to swallow your pride, let go of your ego to live. You have to let go of the past, get the help you need and keep on grinding. Especially in a place like the UK, where there is so much help offered. But that is easier said than done. These people have no resilience and I don't judge them for it, especially because of their childhood. I just hope and pray that they one day they will know their self-worth and do better.

What about single parenthood and family breakdown? No one talks about that because we have lost basic morality. It is not ok for a young girl to get knocked up and just expect the welfare state to provide, it has a knock on effect on the children.

Don't seem like place that should be sorted, will thing even last or get broke within a few days. Council pay for it to be fixed, just to be broken again. This happens in most towns that claim to be hard done by the council, they are still limited to how fast the can change things... A wake up call that it is not just Manchester who ate in this situation, still a lot more around the uk
