I used to go shopping with my step mum there for groceries in the late sixties. In the 70's though - Stolen from Ivor! Great clothing shop.

This was just one small part of a much better Manchester city centre as I remember it. Anyone remember the old arndale as it was before it was utterly ruined? And the old bus station inside it and the excellent cafe in there which was run by some nice foreign folk, I think they were french if I remember right. And what about the grand gardens in piccadilly which looked so gorgeous in the summer with all the colours? They ripped the heart right out of Manchester when they ripped that out. There's only a dreadfully depressing concrete mess there now. And now the city is full of absolutely DREADFUL occultic imagery and activity etc. so it's not safe there now. And the developers have done far more damage than the bombers ever did.

You’re absolutely right about the Gardens back in the day. opposite the famous Piccadilly Radio 261 tower was lovely back then. It was lovely and civilised in Spring and Summer with beautiful flowers and ironically ten times Greener and more eco friendly! I can remember stumbling out of Legend nightclub one morning and sitting chatting with mates in the Gardens till sunrise and watching huge flocks of Starlings swoop around the rooftops of Debenhams and Lewis’s. I remember the bus station terminus stretched between the Tower row of shops (Tower records on corner opposite Lewis’s?) and the Gardens, just as the tram station does now. Somehow the bloody tram stop infrastructure takes up so much more space now. There’s so much useless ugly concrete there, the gardens have virtually disappeared behind more ugly office, restaurants, and iffy retail space. As you mentioned the old Arndale Centre was terrific back then too, I even remember when it was being built around 1976-77 Taylor Woodrow boardings were all over Market Street and the huge building site complex all the way down to M&S one way and all way up to Shude Hill the other. I was at Nicholls Ardwick High school at the time. When it opened, it was a spectacular place to be, nothing else like it in England at the time, except for Brent Cross in North London. I remember some kids used to wag school and ditch their uniforms just to hang around the Arndale back then 😊 It was only a massive shopping centre but it was like the centre of the Universe for many folks, young and old, a really inspiring place, the pride of Manchester back in the late 70s/early 80s

There was one side of it nearer to shudehill which I used to call "cheapside" because of all the great little shops there full of bargains, and it was the same in the market at one end of it further up, there was someone in there selling budget tools and hardware and it was good quality stuff too, really good value, nothing like the cheap tatty garbage that's on sale now, and there was an Afro-Caribbean lady there too selling some great ethnic records that you wouldn't find in more regular record shops. There was something for everyone in the old arndale, there was the elite fashion shops on one side, and the bargain shops on the other side and it wasn't built like a dirty great greenhouse then either so it wouldn't heat up like a furnace in the summer sun like far too many other shopping centres do which EXcludes some disabled folk like me, as does the absolutely intolerable maniacal garbage they play on the radio on the PA systems now, and of course those kind of disabilities are never recognised and only ever treated with appalling contempt and if you complain absolutely no-one ever wants to know, they always expect everyone to be the same which is utter insanity. And we need colourful gardens in our cities as they're awfully depressing places without them.@@Pulsonar

Stolen from Ivor!!! In the late 70s and early 80s that was the best lads casual clothes shop ever!!! Not underground, but down the side next to Beatties scale model shop if I remember rightly. Funny a little further up that street was the main city centre post office where the human loafers used to happily cash their dole cheques and spend what they had on smart loafers at Ivor’s. The same buggers cursed Thatcher and the Tories but dressed better than me just standing in the dole queue signing on office in Aytoun Street 😂 and I was a penniless hard working teen at the old Farmhouse Kitchen restaurant chain at the back of Lewis’s in Piccadilly Gardens (next to Millionaire nightclub -once owned by George Best)
