Note from Soundtoys customer care: “The Auto-Decay shortens the decay value so that any transient information that goes above the threshold has a shorter reverb than any of the quieter parts. Thus it helps cleaning up the reverb and make it breathe with the music. It won’t change the room tone by shortening the decay because it is emulating a plate reverb, which simply has a dampener to control the decay. This is true to the original model with the exception that in SuperPlate you can have up to infinite decay.” While I’m not sure I fully agree that there’s no implication on the sound of the tail with auto-decay, I’d still rather have volume ducking than changes to the decay time..feels like a lot of engineering going into a new feature for which a great solution already exists.

I took the auto decay idea and use it for sound design in Bitwig with all my reverb plugins now. It sounds cool on Raum by native instruments.

I appreciate you and the video and the honest commentary. I personally always enjoy your videos and the pace of your instruction and dialogue. First off, what I wish this plugin did: I want a visualizer in that EQ section! I know it eats CPU cycles, but allow me to turn it on and off. It would make my eq moves a bit more surgical. Also that auto-decay section needs to be a bit bigger. I was struggling with my old eyes. lol.. now on the subject of Auto Decay, at first it took me a while to "get it" and understand how to use it. I actually find it way more useful than ducking. The way I've come to understand and appreciate it is that in my opinion, the flavor of the reverb is not changing but in the case of a vocal, you're not drowning the heck out of it when the artist is singing but you're also retaining those awesome end tail blooms. I feel ducking is a bit more abrupt and obvious.. this feels more natural and tailored and subtle. I can still "feel" the reverb with its tailored decay. TBH I spent loads of time with it to understand the magic sauce of it. I think it's a must have for vocals and I feel this will be something other reverbs will emulate soon.

I could be wrong, but I got the feeling they didn't try to implement ducking but more an auto bloom effect, you know like the typical increased delay feedback at the end of a sound in sound productions. It's confusing, because the target value is your normal size value, and the real size becomes the bloom value.

I saw on another video that you can change the Q of those EQ bands. Either by using a mouse wheel or holding down Ctrl.

I think it's getting hard for the plugin manufacturers. At least for those who are not a bit more innovative. Do we really need another reverb plugin? Or a Pultec emulation, or, or or....

I really dug deep to A/B for the best plate for guitar and Little Plate just beat the much higher end options for my purpose. Obviously I already upgraded and couldn't be happier.

I use some reverbs that allow you to set pre-delay and decay using tempo synced note values. I don't always use it but I do frequently use tempo synced values. What is the worst is sitting there like an orangutan slowly manually turning a knob trying to get some exact value and you can't even type the value in. SoundToys plugins were always like that, you can't type values in, it makes it a little unprofessional. I wish SoundToys would be more innovative with small modern features like this and have a toggle button next to the pre-delay time so you can change it to synced values.

Would be cool to see an update in which you can swop between the auto decay thing and a more traditional ducking method.

i like the auto decay but i miss some settings like attack, ratio. They could have just added a switch to switch between ducking volume or decay... and i miss to add a sidechain to the plugin so the treshold reacts to a different source

I personally think this thing sounds fantastic I use little plate in every mix. But the decay time ducking kind-of didn't mesh with me.

@ManchesterMusic I think in the attempt to match how sound toys is known for doing something special they over engineered a simple solution. Personally I love this plugin and for the upgrade price of 30 bucks it was a huge addition to my collection. I just don't use that 1 feature at all.

I don't have this yet, but for all the other Soundtoys plugins, if you click on the word (ex: rate, threshold, target, recovery, etc.), it gives you a value. Do the words under the auto-decay do this? Just wondering since you're having a hard time seeing them. Also, they just came out with an update with high-resolution graphics (took them long enough - how long have 4k monitors been out?)

Hi Jeff, thanks for the video. If I am not mistaken like all ST's plugins if you click on the name of any of the parameters it will show the number of the setting. Cheers!

I’m hoping they finally add little plate to effectrack because I pretty much only use their stuff effectrack. I have an issue I’m trying to get resolved with them where their bundle was bundle was bought for me about 8 years ago and they changed their website profile system so I have ilok licenses but no purchase record on their website so I can’t get the upgrade deal. Their sound is timeless which is why they can get away with not releasing anything for 7 years but I wish they would update their non audio admin stuff better.

The auto decay feature, as showcased in the video, is Soundtoys’ answer to ducking reverb.
