Geoff, I'd appreciate it if you could review Senn HD490 Pro and compare it to Beyer DT 1990 Pro. The HD490 Pro is the flagship studio headphone from Sennheiser and it's only fair for it to be compared to the flagship studio offering from Beyerdynamic, the DT 1990 Pro. I'd really love to hear your take on these headphones. Btw, you haven't uploaded any video for almost a year now. I hope you're doing well and nothing is wrong with your health and affairs.

Sound ID is actually giving you an extremely inaccurate depiction. It's a total scam. When I used it, I would get everything sounding great, turn off the plugin, bounce the track and play it back. It sounded completely different (like shit actually) on everything. It wasn't accurate at all. The bass would drown everything out (because Sound ID curved it out), it had a ton of distortion (because sound ID made an 8db cut), and it had phase issues (because fucking sound ID changed the phase). So I stopped using it and my mixes translated again lol "Well maybe you used it wrong! Or all your systems are bad. Or your headphones and earbuds are bad!" Nope, nope, and nope. Scam.

It just... I gravitate to plate. They give me a dense layer of space but they so not reverberate all pver the placw. They are focused, mostöy i take them broght and modulated and so they are part of the instrument sound. E.g. when I do drum reverbs, Hall often drags out too much and has small buildup, room is still too diffuse, plate on the other hand builds up instantly and gives a bright distinct sound, it supports well the snare hots but is not in the was. And my gosh for acoustic solos. Its so great

You know. Every youtuber at the end of their video says "Smash the Like Button and Subscribe, it really helps me out! a lot, I'd really appreciate it!" and I almost NEVER do it. But at the end of this very informative video you were just like, "thank you and....have a.. great life" as if you never expect to have your viewer to ever come back. That made me laugh enough to actually click the like button and Subscribe. Excellent channel.

I use RC-20 to dirty up dialog samples for my ambient tracks. I was skeptical at first because, hey, isn't it just noise, crackle, lo-fi, etc.? I already have many plug-ins that do those things. But as I was preparing my single for release, RC-20 went on sale, so I downloaded the trial so I could compare it with what I had already come up with on my samples. RC-20 did it so much better, so much quicker that I bought it right then. For what I paid, even if I had only ever used it on one song it would have been worth the cost. There are imitators out there, even a free one, but if you want to go straight to the kind of sounds it specializes in, and you have the price of a party size pizza to spend, it is THE solution.

Sounds like a nice use case for a RME recording interface with support for the new Room EQ feature. Copy SoundID correction values into an outputs Room EQ and then - Monitor the submix with RoomEQ enabled - Broadcast the submix without RoomEQ using loopback And for the normal monitoring .. enable RoomEQ for monitoring if needed. Regarding downmix in the DAW .. no issues, no Sonarworks plugin needed.

Great video - Subscribed! My take is that while Gullfoss and Soothe 2 have some overlapping functionality, their "tame" features operate differently. Gullfoss' tame feature is designed to control frequencies that are dominating the mix excessively. So to me it works across the full frequency spectrum to dynamically reduce problematic frequencies and increase overall clarity. The tame function in Gullfoss would seem to me to operate as part of its intelligent EQ system that makes rapid adjustments (up to 300 times per second), but so as to improve the overall BALANCE (hence the name Gullfoss) and clarity of the audio. Whereas Soothe 2, on the other hand, seems specifically designed to target and reduce resonant peaks and harsh frequencies. It seems to operate more like a dynamic resonance suppressor, identifying and attenuating problematic resonances in real-time. For me the key difference is focus: Gullfoss aims for overall spectral balance and clarity, while Soothe 2 targets specific resonances and harshness. Like you said (I think) I often use Gullfoss on full mixes or busses, and more often use Soothe 2 on individual tracks or groups, Gullfoss and Soothe can both be used vice versa. I use Gullfoss often on instruments that take up too much spectral energy in my mixes, like Synthesizers or Clean Rhythm or Acoustic Guitars. Functionality I would say Gullfoss uses a broader, more holistic approach to frequency management, while Soothe 2 provides more targeted resonance control but I'm not sure what Sculptor does and I'm very curious to know.

Is this thing able to separate multiple tracks of guitar, say, 2 or 3 guitar tracks, individually, or will it just create one separate track from all the guitars?

I always liked your videos, but this time in my opinion you are doing it wrong! Why send a stereo instrument like drums to a chamber reverb that is set to mono? You get phasing which is clearly audible and not a consistent drum reverb sound.

Glow is absolutely brilliant reverb and is actually better than the UA RMX16 which I also own. I'm so glad that Glow exists because my UA Satellite Quad thunderbolt just died on me a few weeks ago. There is no way I'd be investing in UA's outdated DSP chips in 2024. Thank God for companies like wave alchemy who can rival Universal Audio at a fraction of the price and also for Apple for developing Apple Silicon Chips which are so powerful thus making external DSP chips unnecessary in most use cases.

From what I can tell, soundgym is not what I was hoping for. Software like this (eg Syntorial as well) has a flaw of being focused on reverse engineering sounds. If you’re trying to copy what someone else did from a reference track, this is a useful skill, but if you’re trying to CREATE something and it’s not coming out how you want, it doesn’t really teach you how to fix sound problems - ie, how to mix well. Does being able to hear EQ, compression, or reverb help you determine if a mix needs those things or how much? (It certainly doesn’t hurt, I suppose) Let me caveat that I think soundgym is just advertising “ear training”, so I’m not saying it doesn’t do what’s advertised. I am saying it appears that it wouldn’t be that useful as a tool to improving one’s ability to mix well. Perhaps I’m wrong.
