A fun fact is that the vocal mode in Fabfilter Pro-C 2 (when set to 0ms attack) is almost identical to Waves RVox. Fabfilter hasn't stated anywhere that the vocal mode is supposed to be inspired by RVox (at least not that I'm aware of), but the transfer function matches perfectly. The only difference is that the Pro-C 2 vocal mode has a bit shorter release even when set as long as possible. Maybe it could be that they are both inspired by the same hardware? I have no idea, just thought that it was an interesting fact.

I became a huge fan of Eastern Souvenirs after watching your mix video of this song. I usually use RVOX in conjunction with another compressor that has all the usual controls. I do like the simplicity and it just sounds good with so little effort. I don't get lost down any rabbit holes of playing around with settings that a comp like MJUC has.

We've used the R-VOX every day in our radio/voiceover studio for over 2 decades (RadioCamp). It warms things up a bit so we usually pair it with a bit of EQ to tame the lows. Besides being simple to use, we're in love with the intimate, slightly forward vibe it imparts -- which may come from the fact that it was developed in partnership with Manley! So there is a tube emulation thing going on under the covers.

Yeah, I really love RVox. In addition to using it on vox (almost always), I routinely put it on my kick drum just for the gate (and leave the compressor off). I find it’s a really smooth gate-smoother than dedicated gates. One tip, especially for vox: I find I need to scoop out some low mids a little bit after the RVox, otherwise it starts to sound a little boomy down there.

Thanks for reviewing this plugin. this demo was realistically thought out and the questions regarding it's high regard by many professionals definitely is clearly evident. For those of us who mix and engineer, we want the most effective way to de-noise, compress and de-clutter the sound and this seems to do an excellent job incorporating the full functionality of a gate, compressor & limiter within three simple slides.

Great video. Years ago Waves was one of the main Plug In developers. Personally they never did too much for me then they released the renaissance plug ins and I discovered this tool. It was a mainstay for years until I got a new Mac and now I have to consider whether I'd purchase it again. However, it is a mighty plug in that achieves a stellar result with little effort other than listening. From my times in fancy studios the one thing I noticed about most of the common outboard gear was that there were few knobs to tweak but running your audio through them made a hell of a difference. This plug in is a bit like that to me.

I think audio students need more reminders that simple is ok and using presets is ok. Whenever I watch mixers, it always seems like their workflows get really intricate with settings and that it's 'wrong' to not do that. At the end of the day, you should like how it sounds, even if a pro mixer would point out 15 things wrong with it.

Just flipping back and forth between all of those compressor styles is nice. I have had this Rvox compressor for a while now and never knew it had a gate, lol. It was part of a bundle with another waves plug-in I wanted to use so I never really gave rvox a try. Definitely going to slap it on a vocal bus and give it a try! In a world where the line between artist/producer and mix engineer is super blurry, where you want to get some good sounds in a hurry, that won't stop your creative output flow in a session, these simple design type plugins are indispensable. Most of the most famous hardware comps and limiters of all time are fairly simple as well- you just turn a couple knobs to adjust the level and how much "flattening" you want, and you keep it moving. If some super masterful mix engineer guru I send the track to afterwards wants to get crazy with ADSR and knees/ratio, then I'll let an expert do his thing. If I get technical, it's likely to start sounding WORSE haha.
