As someone who loves learning and preserving cultures from around the world, it always saddens me when languages die out (as well as alphabets/scripts), so I truly hope with all my heart that the elders and the local provincial governments are able to invest time and money to teach the younger generation. It does piss me off that many times the younger generation (and I myself would be included as part of that) just doesn't care about learning the language of their ancestors, I wish they would see beyond the "practicality" of the language, its not just that, the way they SHOULD perceive it is about preserving a huge aspect of their cultural heritage. Even if that means the only people they can speak it with will be with others in their small community, why look at it like that, with time it expand as more numbers learn it, and if they don't learn it, then the language will die out forever. Besides, why not have the best of both worlds, be bi-lingual, in this case they would know Mandarin and Manchu, and there are many other cases of this around the world, the Irish would know Irish and English, the Berber communities would know the various Berber languages and Arabic, and many more. Bi-lingual instead of just one language, its a win-win.

all is not lost. the Xibe language is a dialect of Manchu, and is healthy with many thousands of native speakers. that said, Manchu is still a valuable language given its rich history. it's especially important for historians who study the Qing dynasty, since many primary sources from that period are only in Manchu.
@MrLantean

Xibe language is classified by some linguists as a dialect of Manchu while others classified it as a sister language which is mutual intelligible with Manchu. Most likely it is a sister language rather than a dialect of Manchu.

My father is Manchurian, from Hulunbuir. My mother is from Mongolia, and i do experience a bit of both cultures. I learned basic words in Manchu when i was younger, like Sain no (Hello) and baniha (Thank you). It is quite easy since Manchurian and Mongolian are somewhat similar. I definitely notice that Mongolian culture is much more dominant and 'alive' than the Manchu language and culture, in basically everything, the festivals in Mongolia are more traditional than Manchu, which has basically assimilated into Han Chinese culture. I personally think that the next generation of Manchurians will be Han Chinese, Manchurians and its culture will be forgotten and eaten by the 'hungry chinese assimilation dragon'. And unfortunately the Manchu language isn't receiving any too little support, as Manchurians are seen very negatively in Mongolia and Mongolian culture, despite being similar. I hope that the language can be preserved, but these things die overtime, it is natural.

The fact is Manchu was never a pure race. In the qing dynasty, there and manchu and han (also mongolian) Eight Banners (旗人), this is a military organisation that the manchu rule is based on. And these people all get influenced by Manchu traditions and became manchus. Thus Manchu people themselves are a mix of Manchus, Mongols and Han. Also most Han people in the North only moved there after the 19th century, they probably don't have any manchu ancesters.

But in China, mandarin (language of Han chinese) is official language so everybody need to learn mandarin no matter what races u are. Cantonese, foochow, Hokkien, Hakka etc all are dialects under Han Chinese. About this video, the last dynasty of China - Qing dynasty was ruled by Manchurian, they are not the frequent Han chinese u see. Manchurian is different race with their own culture and language, that is why the comment here say we are astonished how the last emperor PuYi who was a Manchurian can speak so perfect Mandarin with Beijing accent. (The accent is very porch, just like when people talk about the Queens English of England). I'm ethnically Chinese. Born in the U.S. Ancestry traces back to Shanxi and Shandong. I am usually critical of the Qing dynasty for their failures. But nonetheless I believe the importance of the Manchu language and cultures - a bridge between native Chinese values and culture and that of the Mongolians/nomads of the north is very important. This world dominated by white ideology with racism is very much prevalent and it continues to put down the Chinese peoples of the North East. This is simply bullshit. Chinese civilization is very diverse. Chinese peoples has had contact with Jurchens and Manchus for the last 2,000 years. Our cultures had similarities to the point we became one during the Qing dynasty and it was fine.

It's so sad to see this. Is there any province in PRC that was Manchu lands? Jilin or Heilongjiang maybe? If so, the Jilin/Heilongjiang Provincial government should Promote Manchu as Provincial Language like Tibetan in Tibet, Uyghurs in Xinjiang and Mongolian in Inner Mongolia. So everyone who have Manchu blood (even mixed) should speak Manchu. Let's just Han Chinese speaks Mandarin, Manchu speaks Manchu. They can be bilingual to speak Manchu at home, school, neighborhood etc. And speak Mandarin only when talk to Han Chinese, talk to other ethnics and at mandarin language class at school. As well as on formal occasion only. Manchus should not consider Mandarin as their mother language/first language.

Maybe some Manchu lands are in fact in Heilongjiang and Jilin but most of it was in Outer Manchuria that was ceded to Russia in 1860 actually in fact mostly the Vladivostock area That was the reason why some Manchus never returned to Manchuria since they lost their homelands to the Russians And i guess i agree with you in some ways that it should be preserved but Manchu to put it entirely is a dead language. Their people just became Sinicized due to natural assimaltion

manchu was never a dominant majority language. Only the nobles speak manchu in the court. Later in the Qing dynasty even the emperor himself cannot speak manchu fluently. This is what happens when you have a small group of people ruling the majority. They do not have the culture and environment to practise manchu, and manchu is pretty much useless for them at that time.
