This is the simplest tutorial I have seen on Substance 3D Designer. The multiplicity and complexity of the nodes in Designer have always put me off from learning it, but with more tutorials/quicktip videos like this that break these nodes down for ease of understanding, I would get back to learning and using this software. More of these please!

I haven done virtually nothing with Designer, but have looked at a lot of tutorials. It seems to me there is a ridiculous amount of work to create complex shapes. Is there any reason there isn’t just a node for inputting an alpha map, or vector image?

Hey Gordon. Sure Designer is complex, we hope to demistify some of it with these videos. Keep in mind, while it's not faster to use these procedural methods, it's much more versatile, and you can easily reuse them later on in other projects. Think of it as a tradeoff in creation speed vs versatility and re-usability. That, and some people just enjoy the mental challenge, it's almost like a puzzle game ;) And yes, you can just bring in an alpha from Ps or Ai. Any bitmap format works, and SVG vectors too. Just drag and drop straight into your graph!

@@Substance3D Oh I totally get the mental challenge and versatility bit of it. And it’s great to have that option. And thanks, I didn’t know you could drop in an image. Thanks.

@@gordonrobb You could use the "svg" node to bring your vector files into Substance Designer to create your ideas.

Please- stop calling things "Designer" or "Painter" - these are not names on their own, they are titles. Designer of what? What do you Paint? Just because you(Adobe) have purchased something, doesn't mean you have to stop using logic when naming a product. Tutorial is quite impressive btw, this splatter node.. I think I used it to try and make a rock once.... I was very clearly wasting it's power.
