I love the cloth 'board'. Big, yet inexpensive and folds away to almost nothing!

I'm a Buddhist and I love the theme and aesthetics of the game. Perhaps, more than "mandala" it should have been called "kaleidoscope." But above all I think that the theme is only an excuse for an excellent abstract game for two players. For me it's a sure purchase.

Something I find very distracting about the theme is that symmetry tends to be a big part of mandalas and this game asks you to do the exact opposite of that by creating patterns that are mandatorily lopsided. The symmetry and balance is pretty central to the whole tantric meditative aspect of mandalas so it seems weird to pick mandalas as the theme when it’s almost antithetical to what you’re doing in the game.

Played this for the first time tonight with my sister. She took to it like a duck to water - something she very rarely does with boardgames that I introduce her to. Needless to say, she totally kicked my ass. Overall it was really fun, with layers of strategy that really help you stay engaged. Loved it.

Thanks for the review Zee. Would be nice if you explained a little more why you chose the actions that you took. In any case, the designs on the cards are nice, but I don't find the game mechanics very enjoyable. I'd give it a 5/10.

Maybe they will make a neoprene mat for the board

There's already other "patchwork quilt" games out there. That's probably why they went with mandalas.

The simplicity and theme are enough for many people I know.

Agreed. A Better printing of this might give it some place as part of a two player game collection.

Looks very neat. Lost cities killer?

Perhaps, I think Lost Cities' reputation, legacy, success of it's designer, popular theme and name recognition will outlive Mandala IMHO. But then again, Patchwork was a game that came along and shook the foundation of Lost Cities as well.

Seems like a cool game....but a waste of "mandala" as a boardgame title. When you hear that word you expect a circular board with much more psychedelic mechanics
