In the series he says that he was a "Foundling". Which is a word to describe an abandoned child or a child that has been found. Which means he more than likely was found by a Mandalorian after the attack on his home. Most likely found as he was hiding where his father hid him as shown in his flashbacks.

Maybe a jedi just stabbed the battle droid with a lightsaber, the mando does not see force powers in this situation so it would still work. Maybe he even saw force powers, but later thought that he hallucinated because of his fear. I mean, he was going to get killed by a death machine just after his parents died in front of him. Maybe he even had his eyes closed because he was scared idk lol

I did not find mentioned it anywhere, but after seeing the episode three times it dawned upon me, that in their fight the heavy Mandalorians first action is to try and rip off the helmet of the main character. This resonates with what the Armorer asks from Mando and signifies that letting somebody remove your helmet is a sign of weakness in this tribe.
