Ryan begins with the false premise that a critique of the season rests in viewers not being fully invested in SW (Clone Wars, Rebels, Timothy Zahn novels, etc.) lore. As someone who has seen every episode of CW and Rebels several times over, has read the Zahn novels, and for whom the story line was neither obscure nor esoteric, I STILL found the season to be a genuine letdown. It was poorly constructed and written, particularly from a character standpoint. And, when compared to both The Bad Batch and Andor, these deficiencies are even more pronounced.

I like how they kinda end the story arc, while setting up future story arcs. Mythosaur will get paid off later, Bo will continue to rebuild the Mandos, whilst Din,Din will go about their adventures! Definitely could have a spin off for Bo and the Mandalorians. I loved how much Universe building went on in this season and the narrative of Mandalorians being stronger together.

Well there hasn’t been any announcement of season 4 even though sw celebration just happened…and in season 1 there was already a season 2 confirmed….I think that the show may in fact be over. They know the majority of fans don’t care to watch if din djarin is not the frontman of the show, at least I am not willing to give my money for that. I live bo katan but like it’s not her show, and it never will be. Disney have shot themselves in the foot once again !

As someone who was officially adopted by my step father at the age of 16 (He had been my only father figure since the age of 5) I can say first hand how much it meant to me. It was not some trivial assumed thing, it was life affirming. So, for me, it seemed like a major thing in the show.

I was confused that they did a big set up by having the Children of The Watch becoming the defenders of Navarro and putting down roots. Navarro was their new home! Then, just a few episodes later, they've off to set down roots on Mandalore. Also the whole Pershing episode could have been cut from the season and have no effect on the outcome.

Having more land benefits the mandalorian at this stage. The land at Navarro can afford them places to grow their own food and trade for resources that Mandalore couldn't because it's still desecrated by the imperial. Mandalore can be a place of power and politics, while Navarro is the place that feeds them. Also if their attempt at reclaiming Mandalore goes bad, there is Navarro to fall back on.

It was the Armorer who pushed to unite the clans and go to Mandalore, maybe to get everyone exterminated. She was not OK with Mando taking off the helmet, but was very OK to have Bo-Katan to remove hers after he was vindicated by the living waters and seeing the Minotaur. She is plotting something, and it is not good.

Like din said, the mandalorians needed a safe place for their kids to grow up and play. It's why the final shot was of grogu playing at the cabin. taking back mandalore had to happen sooner rather than later, as strategically, moff Gideon's plan was to always cause the extinction of the mandalorians, to plunder the beskar and eliminate the threat of the mandalorian people siding against the empire. Also, like paz said, because we are mandalorians. The Pershing/Kaine/Gideon/shadow council storyline has to build up the looming empire threat and create intrigue and world build the overall narrative because of the interconnected nature of the star wars universe. The mandalorian is setting up story beats for future mandalorian seasons and possibly 2 or 3 different shows like ahsoka and thrawn movie projects. Remember, Disney is giving you star wars game of thrones without saying that they are giving you a huge game of thrones story.

The fuss comes from the casual viewer, the ones that didn't watch the CW and Rebels and were lost or didn't care. They just wanted a standalone series. They thought they had that. It got confusing a bit in season 2 but totally threw them in season 3. Sorry, for them not. Disney+ has made it easy to watch essential episodes and get caught up.

Now I am the hugest Mandalorian fan as a whole and now a fan of Star Wars. This was the gateway for me into the rest of the universe. As well as our 10 month old Mandalorian 😂!!! That's the problem, both characters existence and identity is based something bigger than them (the creed for Din and the leadership of mandalorians for Bo) their affiliative from the get go. For the characters to progress they need pragmatism and heed their own interest rather than the collective. They must be capable enough to be followed instead of being obligated to lead.

Ok, so many good points here and I never comment but gotta clarify something Matt Singer said (that he may not have realized). There is a huge relational difference between Mando being Grogu’s “Foster Dad” and him making the commitment to be Grogu’s actual adoptive parent. Their growing attachment to one another and the character arc it has created is at the heart of the show and the emotional impact of that legal adoption moment in the last episode this season was powerful.

I really liked this season. Probably as much as the prior two. My 9yo son and I watch it together, and watching it with him allows me to see it through his eyes. The silly things like the IG11 mech suit and the "yes" button really cracked him up. Watching Grogu be able to contribute to the fights really connected with him. The idea of beskar-clad, force-powered super soldiers is a scary one and potentially an idea that can be explored in later seasons or other shows. Watching the growth and evolution of the Mandalorian people is entertaining and good lore building. And I really appreciated the noir investigation episode. High marks all around.

My favorite series, maybe of all Star Wars productions ever, is Andor, but I recognize that it might be too adult orientated to carry the Star Wars franchise. I loved this season. Giving Bo-Katan this redemption arc was so satisfying. Kinda wish Sabine was a part of retaking Mandalore, but whatever, they wanted to keep the plot relatively straightforward and I'm on board with that. We are left to fill in a lot of gaps in character development, which was a let down, but overall, this season was a solid 7.5/10. I also believe the title of the first episode "The Apostate" referred to both Din Djarin AND Bo-Katan. Waching all those "SpieS" theorists fall flat on their face was very enjoyable. Did no one pay attention to the fact that season 3 being about taking back Mandalore was set up in season 2? Also, the great thing about calling it The Mandalorian, is that they can set up other character as the main character of the season and/or arc, so this season WAS still telling the story of The Mandalorian, just The Mandalorian was Bo and not Din. They were also showing the story of Din’s and Grogu’s growing bond, and officially becoming family, and Grogu’s journey to leaving the Jedi and becoming a Mandalorian.

This is a story about Bo katan’s redemption through helping Din in his redemption. It began when she saw the mythical beast in the living water, through wearing the helmet and living the way when she was with the people of the watch for herself, and redeemed her people through bringing back the privateer with her helmet off. If you view it as a triumph of her. It’s pretty good.

My takeaway from the end of the show was that it was a broadening of the villain base for Mando and Grogu. For the first two seasons, it was Moff Gideon running everything. Even with this season, we find out that Gideon was still running the opposition against them. It was getting into a Skywalker versus Palpatine vibe from the movies. By introducing the Shadow Council, the story has been opened up to more villains with different motivations for messing with our favorite two. The worst thing the showrunners could possibly do at this point is bring Gideon back.

Even though Mando was not always the focus, this was his journey and he was the essential aspect of not only his redemption but his growth as a man of honor and truth. Along the way he was instrumental in uniting a nation and defeating a daunting galactic enemy. In the end his mission of redemption was not only accomplished, it was exceeded. As a casual SW fan, I really enjoyed this season and the past two. I'd love to watch more seasons of The Mandalorian. I didn't find that not knowing something from the books or animated shows hindered my enjoyment of the season. Nor did I need to be told what the characters wanted for their actions pointed to this. I liked the world building. It was a teaching tool being used to teach Grogu about kinship, Mandalorians (different factions), helping others, loyalty, belief in yourself and others, community, and dangers that exist outside their community. When Bo Katan removed her helmet when the armorer told her to, I didn't expect any of the night watch to do the same for the armorer made it clear that Bo Katan was different and able to do both. For me it was a message about diversity and acceptance, and tolerance of others' differences and beliefs which are not harmful to others like wearing a helmet all the time is not destructive; just different. Of two very opposing factions in a society being able to find it in themselves to allow others to be different without prejudice. It was the first step to unity. Having the shared purpose to retake their home planet and sharing sorrows and joy helped bind them together even further. I connected to Bo Katan when she was despondent at the beginning of the season. She felt depressed, lost and lacked confidence in herself which is perfectly normal after her loss. She felt forsaken by those she had trusted. Yes it seemed like she didn't really want anything but that is the point of being in the mental state she found herself. She needed to find purpose and hope again. By aligning herself with Mando, she learnt what it was to believe again in something and have someone else to believe in you. From the beginning Mando didn't want to rule or have any administrative duties. It was clear to me that all he wanted to do was help reunite his people and go with Grogu to teach him all he can about being a Mandalorian of the Watch. Yes the dark saber being destroyed was a new beginning for the Mandalorian. That particular belief, of anyone who won the dark saber in battle could lead them, was totally destructive. Moff Gideon was not of their race and had no care for them or their beliefs but was just using them and pitting them against each other. I believe that this was to show that how some beliefs need to be re-evaluated and let go especially those that are harmful to others.

Although maybe not the way it was initially intended because of many mishaps, politics and intrigue behind the scenes with Pedro and Kathleen Kennedy...causing delays, I think Din kept a promise that he would help Bo Katan get back Mandalore. He would help her with the Mandalorians, and Din ACCOMPLISHED that. Din also had personal growth, Grogu gained confidence, and showed he started remembering a lot of his training at the temple. I also feel that it accomplished several things resolving a few issues establishing partnerships, and redeemed Bo Katan's arc. Also, establishing the two of them as family and partners, they need to have some home-base because they lost the Razorcrest, which was their home, so this compensates. Plus there was growth with the Armorer, during the baptismal of Ragnar, it was not recited that he need keep the helmet on at all times.

We found out what Bo wanted in the first episode - to take back Mandalore - it was just that she felt she couldn't. But at the end of that episode she see's the Mythosaur and Din doesn't. This is the point where the narrative focus shifts to her, at the end of the very first episode, and what she wants now hasn't changed, it's just that her arc is finding a way unify all Mandalorians, not just her sect, like the great Mandalore did before her.

I mean I understand the end result of the redemption of Mandalore, but it just doesn't feel earned with how this season's story has been told. Everything felt too brushed over and easy if that makes sense. I mean if you break it down: - The two religiously opposed factions come together with literally no hiccups, discussion or complaints. We get one scene Ax and Paz getting mad at a board game, which while cool showing the cultural differences, is literally the only relevant scene and they become happily united in the finale. There was no serious leadership or reconciliation of their differences between the factions. - They just arrived on Mandalore and stumbled into the end villains lair within a couple hours...No planning, no scouting, no sense of tension/foreshadowing aside from Paz's last stand. They literally walked in, ran away, the ship sent reinforcements and they won. I thought the blocked communications could've been utilized more effectively to build tension of no communication with the capital ship as the scouting party was stranded and being picked off, but nah it was solved within 10 mins of running into their first enemies. - They immediately move into the decrepit ruins of the city at the end of the finale, which seemingly doesn't have any infrastructure or ways to support life. Their ship blew up, so not living in that, and the growing "farms" are a bit away. There was no sense of rebuilding, or moving in, they just lit the fire and ta-da the entire planet of Mandalore is free now.

The season was great. Most out of the seat clapping at mandalorians doing some mandalorian schtuff so far. I took the show title 'the mandalorian' to mean Din, Grogu, Bo, the mandalorian people, the tribal identities of what that word means, their sense of home and retaking their planet. I think it gave us all of that and more. By the time we got there, Din's vow to Bo felt like a great knight of one kingdom pledging himself to the new queen for the good of the people. Personally, I think they're hitting their storytelling stride and I'm all in for it.

There was definitely a belief going into the season that it would be about Din Djarin’s redemptive arc but I think the reason that they seemed to stray away from that was, what was he redeeming himself for? Taking off his helmet when Bo’s faction always does that? What does it mean to be a Mandalorian? Each faction was experiencing their own cognitive dissonance. Are the old ways outdated? Are we better united? Does the Dark saber still matter? Helmet or no helmet? etc. The first step in redefining what it means to be a Mandalorian was to unite. I’m guessing now that they’ve reclaimed Mandalore and united, now they can go about creating a new (and hopefully an improved) era of Mandalorians.

Crushing the dark saber was very symbolic to the unity and rebirth of Mandalore. I thought it was a very appropriate ending to the season. I appreciated that they allowed fans to sense this incredible moment in Mandalore history without giving us a watered down explanation of why it was so meaningful. I feel like Matt Singer in this discussion was almost wanting a hallmark version of this story. (I’m sure that’s not really what he wants but I couldn’t help but disagree with most of what he was saying.). This story is vast. It’s not just about Din and Grogu. It’s not even just about generations of Mandalorian civil wars and unrest coming to an end. It’s beautiful in the fact that it continues to tie together the over arching Star Wars story. I appreciate the imperfections too for it feels more real to me in that sense. I hope people can see and understand this season as a true connection to the other series and threads within the Star Wars universe.

I think this season established why the Mandalorian’s will have to be instrumental in defeating Thrawn. His whole tactic is to learn an enemy through their art and culture and use it against them. In fact the old ways they stick to might be what Thrawn uses to break them.

I personally loved this season. I think too many people wrote their own headcanon and got pissed when nothing they predicted happened. The Mandalorian is Din, Grogu, Bo, The Armor, and all the Mandalorians. This whole season was about Mandalorians finally coming together, putting aside their differences and taking back their home world. Din and Grogu were catalysts to events. Bo said it a few times, Mandalorians are stronger together. They just needed a push to get there. I really don't think it was that subtle. Each episode had a purpose. What happened to Pershing, being tricked and mind wiped by Gideon's spy to hide what Gideon was really doing from the other Empire remnants. Even episode 6 had a purpose besides giving a funny little side quest and cameos to some SW fan celebrities, it gave Mandalore an ally and reunited Bo with her fleet.

I’m more on Pete’s side. Maybe because I’m older, I just don’t let these things upset me, even though I’d call myself a big fan of SW since 77. Like Pete, my expectations of TLJ colored how I originally saw it. But liked it after subsequent viewings. I learned to not get caught up in expectations. I feel like professional fans get upset a lot for their expectations not met. Two things I’ve learned about Star Wars that has helped. 1) everything is from “a certain point of view.” And 2, “you must unlearn what you have learned.” As soon as more Mandalorians came into the story, I switch thinking about the name as a plural. The Mandalorian isn’t just about Din Jarin and Grogu. I guess I’m not stuck in this rigid view of storytelling. On the one hand Star Wars has always been uneven. It’s a myth being written in real time. It copy and pasted from so many sources just like other myths have done. On the other hand Life is just two short and hard to get upset about entertainment. And at the end of the day, as much as I love the movies, books, comics, etc it’s just entertainment. We’re allowed to see and enjoy this grand scale storytelling on multiple levels. To me that’s what makes it enjoyable.

I loved this season. This season was all about Din doing what he does best, fixing problems. He fixed the Mandalore problem for Bo and all Mandalorians. I believe there was a lot of progress and growth for the entire series. There was growth with the Mandalorians not needing the dark Saber or their helmets. There was growth with Din and Grogu as they now work together and Grogu is Din's adopted son. The whole show is progressing the mando-vese narrative of the Empire is out there and needs to be dealt with. Instead of this being one stand-alone show, it is a stand-alone season. I loved the closure of the ending scene. That arc is finished, and we have no idea what next season will bring. Maybe season 4 will be more stand-alone shows of Din and Grogu as the other shows sets up their foundation, or maybe it is time to battle the Empire. Whatever they have planned, it will start on a clean slate, and I am looking forward to it.

He strikes me as someone who can’t enjoy something if it doesn’t match his expectations. He also strike me as someone who is on his phone while watching because most of his complaints are addressed but the show. Ryan running down that list was perfect example.

I just thought it was hilarious how in a previous episode, they ran out of jet fuel, but in this one they all had unlimited supplies! 😂😂

You gotta assume the rebel mandalorians that stayed behind have a way to refill fuel, maybe the same place that had growing plants? 1 refuel makes sense

How many times do you fill your car back up with gas every time you drive it? They were in a surprise attack from the flying creature... So they probably weren't flying with a full tank. Now when you go on a road trip, you make sure you have plenty of fuel. They were prepared on Mandalore

Why assume the whole flight to save the kid was shown in real time? Did you want to watch 1/2 hr of them just flying? You don't know how far any of those flights actually were.

I did enjoy season 3 so much more than the first two. The writing was by far the best of the three seasons so far. The character development was so satisfying, especially compared to season two. And there were almost no filler episodes, that contributed absolutely nothing to the story. I suppose that many hardcore fans enjoyed also the many references to the animated shows I am only told about. But as someone who doesn't know anything of these shows, I considered this a really complete and satisfying season. There was absolutely nothing missing to understand the characters or the story. And finally we got a lot more on Mandalore and the Mandalorians! I mean, this show has it in the name! But Mando himself did know very little about Mandalore. The worldbuilding was great. However, the finale unfortunately lacked the sense of danger, since it beame clear very soon that really no one of the main characters will die. I was really disappointed from season two, which could (or should) have been stripped down to 3 episodes, the rest was pretty much random filler material. And while I totally understand the criticism concerning the structure of the episodes, at the end of the season it is totally clear and everything makes sense. And I really liked that the story could end now. Which it obviously won't, since the show is successful, but nevertheless.

I've really enjoyed Mando, but without Screen Crush, I'm not sure I would still be watching it. I don't know 90%+ of the Star Wars references that go by unexplained. I had no idea who Bo Kattan was. No idea who Thrawn was. I hope the writers listen to Ryan about the importance of storytelling and permanent deaths. Because, yeah, Star Wars lacks all suspense. No one dies.

i think the whole series was good even know din wasn't the main focus he was the essential part on bringing the different tribes together he seems to have been the missing piece of the puzzle if he hadn't had gone to bo and sent grogu to her for help she would not have met his tribe and connected with them which changed her views on them din was esential to the whole plot but what would have been nice is to see grogu using more of the force it would be interesting to see more of his story as the little green oap is still a mystery

I wish they would have held off on the Grogu and Mando reunion and gave us two or three episodes with Luke training him. It would have been awesome to see and also give their reunions a lot bigger of an impact. This season was all over the place but the last two episodes made up for it in some ways

You guys are supposed to be in the know. But I’ve heard for a few months now that they’re doing a spin off series featuring the Mandalorians.. so if that’s the case, then clearly, this was done to introduce a spinoff show and then send the Mandalorian and Grogu off back into their own show next season. I didn’t have a problem with any of this. I enjoyed the show for what it was. I’m excited for the prospect of a show centering on the Mandalorian home world.

No offense, but I find your insinuations that we "casual" fans,, those of us who have only watched the live action Star Wars movies and programming, are unable to understand what is going on in The Mandalorian Season 3, a bit insulting. The way the season played out may not have been perfect, but I followed the overarching plot easily enough, got engaged with Bo and all the other characters, and enjoyed each episode.

Whether you liked this season or didn’t, the show is called Mandalorian and we got a season of Mandalorians. Although I love the Din and Grogu story, the show isn’t called Din the Mandalorian. The clan talking back their home world of Mandalore within the Mandalorian show is exactly where it should’ve happened.

I agree. If it had been called "The Mandalorians" from the beginning, there would be no debates. Take the second "s" from "The Spies" and we'll all be better off.

Not a fan of the SME format especially where things get kind of overly opinionated for lack of a better term. Story was told for 3 seasons, it started small got bigger and bigger and finished small. Was it perfect maybe not but the strong reactions only serve to stress viewer experience vs entertain/encourage watching the channel. “Casual” fan cant follow? - Loner>>>Finding connection >>>Dealing with connection>>>Learning there is a cost>>>Paying the cost by learning there is more to the world and what it is to be a Mandalorian>>>take those learnings and repair the world of where he came from>>> to his reward of peace and being stronger for having taken the journey. If the only true flaw is not seeing “The Armorer” unhelm herself, Emily Swallow is a fantastic actress.

Matt’s criticism kinda baffled me. It seems like most of his gripes are rooted in not knowing the end of the story (or as he said “where things are going”). We have another season or two left. We shouldn’t know the end yet. This season is merely a part of the story. The Mandalorians finally putting aside their differences and Bo-Katan finally understanding what it takes to be a leader are significant and will certainly come back into play. Din and Grogu working for the New Republic, the Shadow Council, the buildup to Thrawn. Just some of the pieces set in motion this season. I thought S3 was weirdly structured but otherwise really good.

I've enjoyed these discussion videos all season, however I always think that me and Matt watched completely different seasons 😅 I agree the story telling was a little all over the place, and it's not what I was expecting, but I absolutely loved the season! And I think I will like it even more with a rewatch, I agree from an earlier point you made that it's a little hard to follow with weekly releases. But I liked how they closed off mandos redemption straight away, like end game where they chop if thanos' head straight away, which I thought would be most of the film, and then the story changed from there. After Mando/Bo realised it wasn't poisonous, the next part of the story kinda followed as it would, it was logical. I also didn't care about Pershing at all until that ep and didn't realise I wanted to care about him, but I'm glad I now do. Also Jack Black

No ones mentioning, they pulled two episodes from the Mandalorian Season 3 for the Book of Bobba Fett. Which messed up Season 3 and meant they had to find two more episodes to fill the space. Pretty sure the episode with the Doctor was one of them, and the Jack Black episode could have been the other filler
